Its đoạt mệnh time :v

I gave Taken Soul: Đoạt Mệnh a decent go, but I can’t say that it was any good sadly. To describe the gameplay, I would say that it is inspired by Resident Evil in the way it plays but fails across the board. Your character’s attacks are sluggish, movement feels much the same, enemy variety is nonexistent, the few puzzles they had were dead simple, the levels vary from claustrophobic and annoying to navigate to outright huge and empty (plus it railroads you pretty tightly), the hitboxes feel bad for melee attacks, the to get the butterfly to work I just ended up trying repeatedly until it worked, action prompts are very specific for where you are standing, and sometimes you have to inspect the item then interact with it which overlaps visually and kills your time, and in rough cases, kills your character. That is a lot of issues, the shooting is acceptable at least. But the whole thing was just unfun, and there were several times I was just about to quit the game and be done with it. The first one was early on in the hospital, after failing the start of the escape portion it put down my health to a point where the full sprint was gone and it killed me over and over probably with 15 times of trial and error, but still, there was nothing I could do. I decided to restart the level and was able to get the full sprint back and make the run immediately after that. Speaking of that section it is also worth noting that the stealth in this game sucks, as it is all about distance not what you are hiding behind, and better yet, it was then never used again. The second time I kept on getting locked in by enemies when trying to grab a key item, and with the inconsistent hit boxes I struggled to melee them. Eventually, I just glitched through them. Speaking of glitches, the 3rd time was in the mansion. Apparently, there is a bug that if you kill an enemy that is supposed to grab you before it happens then the game locks your camera and you cannot move. This happened to me twice at different parts in the game, and the first time I started my review and was planning on just calling it, but then I decided to push through restarted the game, and was able to get through the rest. It is ridiculous that it happened but I have seen worse bugs at this point. There was a 4th and final time when I was just about ready to give up and that was the stupid boat race in the middle. First of all, it was just out of the blue so it was not starting great, second the controls were garbage as in use WASD to navigate but you have to be alternating Q and E to pedal, so I just ended up putting my hands over one another which was awful, third the damn thing steered like it was on the slickest ice imaginable, and lastly if you even went slightly out of bounds it failed you. It was ridiculous, and even though it is technically not supported I even tried to use a controller to navigate and my keyboard to pedal, and it probably would have worked but it was even more sensitive on the turns. Eventually, I made it through, but it was terrible. The first jump scare got me a bit, but it was a weak jump scare and thus had little impact on the overall feeling. Truly a disappointing showing. As for the story, it is pretty weak. It is clear that the main story beats were not interesting, but as for everything else, it could be translation-related. However everything was really coherent, and there was only one grammatical error that I noticed so that suggests that maybe not. However, that still doesn’t mean that some context was lost and that possible issue is further exacerbated by the fact that some of the longer pieces of dialogue went under the UI and made me miss some context maybe once or twice (still shouldn’t have happened even if it was extremely minor). The worst issue I had was that I also had one moment where the text of a key lore message was overlapping, so I exited the note to see if I could load it again and did so before even trying to read it. This resulted in a cutscene immediately starting and me missing some huge context. This moment had something else to it which is technically a spoiler, but I want to share.
In that cutscene where the dock explodes after the fight and reading the note I laughed out loud this story is just that ridiculous.
I was displeased with the story and it felt rushed especially when it just jumped your character to a place after loading, gave a few lines of dialogue then jumped again to another place (this happened twice). And the reveal and everything at the end is not only abrupt, but it just didn’t have that great of an impact. I guessed the reveal pretty early, and it left some stuff out about the character that you play. Overall, the story does not save the game. The audio has the game’s one real positive which was the music was pretty good, though I am pretty sure there were less than 5 tracks, and a big chunk of the time none of them were playing. The song that they include that has the singing was my favorite, I can’t understand the lyrics as they are in Vietnamese, but it sounds really sweet. However the voice acting feels subpar, and the sound effects are pretty bad. Everything but the enemies you hit will make a sound like something is chopping into wood (this includes animals and people when you can hit them), the pistol sounds fine, the explosives are pretty weak sounding, and the ambient noises are either just acceptable or not there at all. Overall the sound takes the highlight of the game, but the bar is pretty low as well. Graphically the game looks very dated. Animations are very stiff (if they even exist at times), the faces and people have that uncanny valley look (but not in the good horror game way), the textures are pretty low resolution, there are very few assets in the game, the constant fog does not work as it does in silent hill it just looks weird in this case, and the lighting was all over the place sometimes making things too dark and other times making things too bright. The use of color was okay though, the blue butterfly stood out as it should. It is not the worst in the world, but it seems quite dated and has a few issues, still, that is not to say it is bad, but it is just not what you would expect out of other indie games of this caliber in 2024. In the end, I don’t think Taken Soul: Đoạt Mệnh was a good game. It is not the worst by any means, I have played games that I gave up on way sooner made by teams way bigger and better funded. I also found it pretty funny that the achievements are very glitched, I grabbed one item and then got the achievement for all 5, so that was an easy 100% for a game. As a side note, it is really neat when I get to experience games from different cultures. I know very little about Vietnam so that was cool to see, and so in that way, I am glad that the developer gave me a chance to curate this game. I think that its current mixed status is a pretty good spot for this game. Completely playable (in other words I never got so stuck that it was just game over) and I think that speed runners could be able to squeeze some fun out of it finding glitches and exploits but that is unlikely to happen. For most other people it is probably not worth buying unless the premise really stands out to you.
