So I love this game, its easily my favourite Raven Software game, and just now I've posted a comprehensive steam guide to all the weapons, levels, enemies and locations in this game so would I recommend it? HELL YEAH! I initially posted a negative review but a dev cleared up one of my major problems about the multiplayer being removed, and the fact it is reversible by deleting the dplayx.dll file so props to the team for giving us that option. The reasoning to not have people be forced to install DirectPlay makes a lot of sense since its a really old game protocol that nobody uses anymore. I hugely appreciate that the game includes the awesome CD music now in .ogg format without the need for a CD and presumably functional looping which you can't get from a virtual CD drive. My only issue is that this version is using cnc-draw which forces the game to use the 8 bit rendering method that only goes up to 640x480. I would recommend downloading DgVoodoo2 and using that for Direct3D rendering instead. The in-game resolution will only go up to 800x600, but if you edit the user config file you can set the resolution to "D3D 1680x1050x16" which will give you a great, modern looking experience. So why do I love this game? Its a non-linear 2.5D action game with an emphasis on exploration and problem solving. It does not hold your hand, it sets you free into this post-apocalypse with a shotgun and a colourful array of enemies with plenty of satisfying weapons to use against them. It feels almost like a proto-imsim in some ways. Mechanically dense in some ways which kinda takes inspiration from the complex games of the early 90s but functionally more accessible. Also for 1997, this game has (after some tweaking and a vps tunnel) fully functional co-op multiplayer where you and 3 other players can play through the whole game from start to finish. You can even save and load the game, with each player having their positions and inventories retained! This was unheard of for that era so it was really ahead of its time. So yeah, buy this for sure. Its amazing.
Wow, seriously can't believe this got rereleased! Don't let my Steam time fool you, I've spent lots of hours in this game over the years. This is a great rerelease, as it functions perfectly fine on modern systems. Only downside right now seems to be alt+tab seems to completely crash the game for some reason. Also, there's the lack of the D3D video options which is a shame, but I've never gotten that to work on newer hardware. This game and Mageslayer had some of the coolest and most vibrant dynamic colored lighting I've ever seen. But they're only fully properly shown off when displayed in D3D mode. Hopefully one day this will get updated. I hope one day there's also an update that allows multiplayer over the internet, I'd imagine it was chaotic as heck. As for the game itself, this is an INSANELY good game, like way more than its obscurity would lead you to believe. It plays almost like a Sci Fi post apocalyptic Hexen in a top down perspective. That's the best way I could describe it. There are multiple ways to complete your objectives and the game is essentially an interconnected world with levels that require revisitng. Very ahead of its time. Atmosphere, soundtrack, combat, etc is all perfect. Sadly there are two issues with the game though. The first one is that the mouse feels very strange and awkward to move around. I had to get used to it, but it seems like this is always how it was, even playing it on my Windows 98. The other issue which could easily turn people off, is that the game can be a bit confusing. The level design is *VERY* reminicent of Hexen. Same developers, so that would make sense. But if you don't know what you're doing it can take some trial and error, progression always feels like a puzzle. But it's more fair in this game I think, since it actually will give you some sort of hint where or what has been affected by whatever you just did. All in all, if you're a fan of gory shooters and Raven Software, you should absolutely pick this up on here and GOG!
The same great chaotic game from back in the 90s. If you enjoy any sort of top down GTA action you'll love this. Plays well on steam deck once you set up your controller. I uploaded a preset controller layout to the community for ease of use. I'm very happy with this one so far. A pleasant surprise to see it available on steam
Ah, yes... The original HOTLINE MIAMI!
It's better than I thought but the only problem I have is that it's like hexen, I don't know where to go
For me, this is the best Raven Software game, at least from that decade. It's a pretty unusual game that allows you to explore vast locations quite freely, from a top-down perspective. It has a good soundtrack, (I think the best that Kevin Schilder composed), many different weapons, items, boss fights and a lot of dark humor. The advantage is that the game works directly out of the box, unlike many other old games on Steam. The disadvantage is lack of clarity of some objectives, I often had to watch playthroughs on YouTube.
Classic. I've pirated it in 97' when I was poor. Now I can make things right. Sorry Raven Software, your game was very cool.
Better than Diablo 4!
