absolutely amazing.
Good stuff. Wish it were easier to mod though.
If you are looking for an immersive VR rhythm experience that prioritizes flow and dance-like movement over pure aggression, Synth Riders is an absolute must-play. Unlike other rhythm games that focus on drum-like striking, Synth Riders invites you to "ride the rails" and trace arcs through the music, creating a uniquely fluid and creative connection to every track. Why This Game Rocks: Incredible Gameplay Flow: The core mechanic involves using your hands (virtual orbs) to strike notes and ride long rails, which feels more like a synchronized dance than a typical rhythm game. The "Spin Mode" adds another layer of immersion by allowing orbs and walls to come at you from 90, 180, or 360-degree angles, keeping you constantly on your toes. Stunning Aesthetic & Visuals: The game perfectly bottles up a vivid 1980s cyberpunk aesthetic, featuring neon-drenched dystopian cities, Tron-like landscapes, and brilliant laser effects. For a truly "mind-blowing" experience, try the handcrafted Synth Riders Experiences, which are playable visual journeys synchronized perfectly to major tracks. Diverse and Expanding Soundtrack: The base game includes over 55 phenomenal tracks, primarily focusing on synthwave, synthpop, and electro-swing. For fans of bigger artists, the DLC collection is massive, featuring packs from Muse, Gorillaz, Lady Gaga, Lindsey Stirling, and even League of Legends (K/DA). Great for Fitness: It is a fantastic tool for physical exercise. With an integrated calorie tracker and a "Force Mode" that rewards you for hitting notes with more physical intensity, you can easily turn a gaming session into a high-energy workout. Customization & Progression: The game is highly user-friendly with deep customization, from adjusting colors and transparency to a new progression system that lets you level up, track stats, and earn rewards as you play. Whether you want to climb the global leaderboards in competitive multiplayer or just lose yourself in a "synthey-disco dance," Synth Riders is a top-tier VR essential that belongs in every library. The Only Real Drawback: Mandatory VR Hardware: On Steam, a VR headset is absolutely required to play. While a 2D "flat screen" version has been adapted for the Nintendo Switch that removes the headset and motion control requirements, the Steam experience remains a committed VR title. To join the "Riders" community on PC, you must own compatible hardware like a Meta Quest (via SteamVR or link), PlayStation VR2 (via PC adapter), or other SteamVR-compatible headsets. Why It's Still Worth It: Unmatched Immersion: Despite the hardware barrier, reviewers note that the game is an "absolute must-have" for anyone who already owns a headset. The "experience" levels are cited as some of the most overwhelming and impressive visual journeys available in VR. Full-Body Engagement: Unlike traditional rhythm games, the VR requirement allows for gameplay that involves your entire body, catching notes and riding rails that make you feel like you are truly dancing within a surreal musical universe. Continuous Updates: The developers, Kluge Interactive, frequently release massive free updates, such as the recently launched "Level UP" progression system and mixed reality modes for specific headsets. I currently own a Meta Headset
fun as hell, beats the saber even modded
Synth Riders is a VR Rhythm game where you have to move your arms around to hit floating balls in rhythm with the song. Compared to its contemporaries, such as Beat Saber, it gives you more of a range of motion and is easier on the wrists as you are not flicking your wrists around to hit notes (at least not in Rhythm mode). Most of the people I know who play this and Beat Saber would agree that Synth Riders provides an overall better workout since you are moving in wider ranges of motion and you get more of your body involved. The game has a decent starting lineup of songs with lots in DLC song packs and even some freebies here and there. A lot of props have to be given to the Synth Rider devs for putting in a lot of features that require significant modding with Beat Saber to get to work, such as Twitch song requests, custom maps, multiple camera angles, a "Now Playing" song feature, and avatar support (although everyone I know who uses avatars when playing Synth Riders do not like the native feature and go through 3rd-party software instead). Multiplayer lobbies are easy to set up and get playing with your friends, although you have to have the same custom maps downloaded to play them. You should all be able to play OST maps as long as the room leader owns the song. Now to the pitfalls of Synth Riders. If you intend to stream it, just know that the streaming community for it is practically dead after the devs changed the API and the only people who made Twitch chat integration decided to drop the project because not enough people played Synth and the Synth community was being really weird about it. Without native chat support or a 3rd party option that integrates chat, it's practically dead in the streaming space until the devs can make its own Twitch chat integration or another dev picks up the mantle where Synth Riders+ left off. The OST mapping, in my opinion, has dropped off as of late and most of it is not fun. A lot of the earlier song packs were fun and I can play them on repeat. The newer ones just are not hitting the same and it has been really disappointing. While there are some custom mappers in Synth Riders, the mapping community is small and only a trickle of songs come out. If you really want a song you enjoy mapped, you will more than likely have to map it yourself. You might be able to find someone who does commissions, but it is not at the same level as Beat Saber. You will find your favorite mappers (who might not even map any more) and put their songs in your favorites to play over and over, but that can get stale over time. Synth Riders is the VR Rhythm Game that could, just trucking along at its own pace trying to carve out its own space in a crowded market of more and more VR Rhythm games. If you are looking for more of a workout with less wrist damage, then Synth Riders can be a great addition to move and have fun while doing it!
