great game brings back so much nistolga
have seen a lot of negative reviews about the changed artstyle but I think some people misunderstand what a remaster (or “Redux”) is supposed to be. the point of a remaster is to modernize visuals and polish up mechanics — not to preserve every single pixel exactly as it was, otherwise, it would essentially be the same game. as someone who always enjoyed S&S2 more for its gameplay loop than its visuals, I find this version to be a refreshing and much more player-friendly version. several core mechanics have been reworked in ways that make the game less punishing and more rewarding to play.
MAJOR CORE IMPROVEMENTS (+)
- tournament pacing: In the original, you had to slog through an endless number of faceless gladiators before you could fight a champion. losing to one of them meant your entire progress could vanish thanks to RNG. in Redux, it’s usually just 6–7 fights before the champion, which makes tournaments much tighter and more enjoyable. - death system overhaul: in classic, death meant losing all progress and XP. in Redux, you roll dice when you die — depending on the result, your character revives with or without a gold penalty. this means you can keep leveling up and earning gold even if you lose multiple times in a row, which eliminates the old “stuck and frustrated” feeling. - much better level scaling: despite these relaxing mechanics, the game’s difficulty is more well-balanced than the original, where you could become overpowered very easily by maxxing specific stats.
MINOR ADDITIONS (i'm neutral)
- difficulty selection for normal battles - a minimalistic perk system tied to warrior/mage builds (warfare/wizardry) - a day-night cycle: each action advances time, and at night you can rest at the tavern or fight the ghost of your last defeated champion in the battle pit. - smoother "60fps feely" animations and particles. - optional “classic” visuals (shop and arena backgrounds) for nostalgia seekers. - more options on boss rewards: their helmet, their weapon or just gold
DIDN'T LIKE THESE (-)
- level cap is brutal. max level is 60 and you're playing 1/3 of the game as 60 level with no progression at all and it is diabolic if you made a warrior/tank build like me as you will encounter with loads of mage enemies that damage you 1K-2K with every magic and lose instantly. if the cap was unlimited or much more, we would had a chance to rebuild our character instead of praying for RNG. - simplified adventure mechanic. in classic, random events gave you more engaging situations and actual choices to make. in Redux, you simply get asked if you want to go on a journey, and then you’re given a very short story text and saying you either gained some stat or lost some stat. some players even reported it being very punishing - old UI bugs are still present - window mode is not adjustable (there is no resolution setting) - i think old shop menus were more user-friendly - the enchantment (partly) and taunt/crowd mechanics are ripped off.
