Dont let the interface fool you. This is a hardcore sim of the politics and living of a Samurai Warlord questing to be the Shogun. Epic combat, incredible minigames, so many ways of play to dominate as a wannabe Shogun!
OK, this was released a gazillion years ago. The sounds are what they are and the graphics are.. eh.. period correct. Still definitely the best samurai-theme game ever released. Def worth a remake, def worth the money.
love it.

Mount & Blade: Samurai
When this came out Nintendo ruled the gaming world. There was no internet, no cell phones, no streaming...it was a world many gamers would find outrageously primitive. So it should be no surprise that a game from that era is very primitive by today's standards. With hundreds of newer strategy games on the market, is this worth playing? For me, no. Though I own dozens of strategy games, I am not a strategy gamer. For me this would be a pass, at least until I play some of the more recent games. For a fan of strategy games, this game was one of the early successes in the genre. And it is set in an interesting time in Japanese history. It has the usual management, along with duels, espionage, marriages, etc. The combat can be challenging, even for those of us who grew up when this game was cutting edge. Who doesn't love a challenge?
While this game shows its age graphically, you get to enjoy working your way from the ground up to shogun, either through demonstrating your honor, or defaming those in high standing, to put you in your lords favor when he dies, possibly even through your blade. The main part of the game is interacting with the world around you, which uses pretty advanced morality and reputation systems for its time, this mode of play can lead into 3 more modes of play: 1 on 1 Sword Fighting, Top down action, and a Real Time Strategy mode. This game allows you to succeed through gaining honor and high standing, or backstabbing and betrayal, you can in fact frame other members of your clan by sneaking into their house and leaving evidence of wrongdoing to raise your standing to the top, and then assassinate your lord to take his position as lord. You can also incite peasant uprising in a rivals domain to create a similar means to that end, or kidnap and ransom their family members. All in all this has a pretty satisfying sandbox of morals to play around in, especially if you don't plan to do things the right and honorable way. While your interactions are important however a lot of them are generic, and provide the same dialogs with RNG.
It's a classic, a precursor of many genres. It combines (with its flaws) the RPG, strategy and action genres in a dynamic Japanese setting. Each bit has some exploits and unreasonable results, but all in all, it's entertaining enough to overlook them.
