BottomLine at the Top: A strangely underappreciated "early Telltale-esque" style game that I found to be pretty funny. ------------------------------------- Pros ------------------------------------- -Good production values. Music, art design, and voice acting are all top notch. -Enjoyable characters especially that nurse, rarr! ;) -Lots of good one-liners. Really enjoyed Mel’s acerbic dry British humor. Also has one of the greatest disses to Hidden Object games I've ever heard. (Seriously if you’re a big P&C fan this joke alone is worth purchasing the game.) -Onscreen interactivity hotspot highlight function -In game tiered hint system. Also, after being inactive for a while a character will make some additional hints if you get stuck. -Can run at graphically higher settings on lower spec machines (i.e. mine.) I found the clothing texture details to be rather impressive. -Excellent attention to lip-synching animations. ------------------------------------- Meh. ------------------------------------- -First time startup loads into a window. Weird. -The story. As of this chapter its only really "meh" so it goes here. -Has a couple of poor "game flow" areas. In one case the thing you are looking for is obscured by the main character's default entry position in a room so I didn't even know it was there. The hint systems suggestion was too obtuse in one or two puzzles as well and I found myself stuck on more than one occasion. ------------------------------------- Cons ------------------------------------- -Inventory button to examine/use/combine items vs. bottom bar for selecting which item to use in the environment is confusing and unintuitive. -Slight delay when clicking thru dialogue. In this game you end up clicking things a lot when you get stuck so this delay can get frustrating. This game's chapters are currently going for $6 each or the complete first season for $15. I can understand how people who paid the $6 asking price for approximately 3 hours of game play that includes getting stuck on some confusing puzzles and having relatively few locations to explore would rate this lower. However, I was able to pick up all three episodes on Fanatical for 37 CENTS, so I consider it an absolute steal. The games inconsistent tempo and limited destinations aside, I feel that this is a title worth considering for any P&C fan if they can find it on discount. Mixed. There are some fun jokes and puns, making a playthrough worthwhile. However, it also felt like they were trying too hard. It is a nice pickup from a bundle ... supremely satisfactorily sufficient. A decent, funny p’n’c adventure with meandering plot and political undertones in 3 episodes. Generally, it works, but it won’t be for everyone. Despite a few optimization issues at set up and game’s insistence to be played in windowed mode whenever it starts, overall it runs smoothly and has bright cartoonish 3D environments that are pleasing to the eye and set the mood for the comedic tone of the story. It’s a classic point’n’click but with one of the most unintuitive, inconvenient inventory set-ups I’ve come across in a long while. If you always skip adventure game tutorials, try this one – it’ll save you time on figuring out how to navigate the game. Once you got the hang of the belt system, you’ll jump into the game which runs mostly on extensive dialogue, side quests and said inventory-based puzzles which hover somewhere around “Fairly Easy”. Since everyone’s “easy” is different, there’s built-in hint system (the “Ask Your Friend” kind) and the characters occasionally will point you to the right direction by saying helpful stuff after you left them standing for a minute or two. So, no worries, Purple Patriot (aka Kyle Keever) and his trusty British sidekick Mel won’t leave you hanging when it comes to puzzles… What they will leave you hanging with is the story. Strangely, Supreme League of Patriots’ weakest link is the plot, and strongest – the dialogue. Rarely do those two go such separate ways. We start with mildly interesting episode 1 and Kyle’s desire to win the American superhero contest as man in tights – Purple Patriot; then dip into snooze-inducing and rather pointless (besides showcasing writers’ satirical wit, perhaps) episode 2, where not much happens at all (getting superhero stuff together while fighting bureaucracy); and go on to somewhat better episode 3 with a slightly more ambitious, yet still anticlimactic events (Two countries showdown. No, it isn’t as grand as it may sound). It’s all fairly aimless and lacking intensity even for a game that’s, in a nutshell, a political parody. Stakes are never high enough to really care, and often go low enough to be bored. It would be a “not to recommend” game if it wasn’t for the satire, irony and witty banter between classic British dry humor of Mel and hilarious generalizations and potty humor disguised as very eloquent statements by Kyle. Most of it is political and not for easily offended; but even if it occasionally gets too wordy and misses the mark, the dialogue is undoubtedly what carries this game a step further beyond “Eh, just forget it” category. The writing can be easily pulled into hundreds of quotes on everything from social norms to culture to gaming itself. Voice acting is on par with dialogue and works to amplify its frequent brilliance wonderfully. In a way, it saves the game. Supreme League of Patriots will do the trick if you find yourself bored, running out of things to play. With not much of a story, but some good humor and pretty picture it levels out as an average run-of-the-mill adventure. It goes on sale often - all 3 episodes go for $5, so you can snag it then, if lots and lots of political banter is your kind of thing.
Not a bad game, but mechanically a bit tiresome. It's mostly linear and story-focused, with a 7/10 jokes/satire. The main problem is the clunky UI and puzzles requiring a lot of back-and-forth between the characters to look for new dialogue options (which becomes a chore towards the end, when it becomes the only trick in the box). Overall I'd agree with the aggregate score of 60-70%. A fine game, just not outstanding. Would recommend only to P&C fans and on sale.
Artwork and music are wonderful. Voice acting was good. The only thing I didn't think was all that great was the story, jokes and puzzles. They weren't clever or interesting. The game itself is short with very few rooms. If you really want to buy it, do so only when it is deeply discounted. I have the other two issues, so hopefully it gets better.
Interesting premise, but it takes a bit more to have a really enjoyable game. Don't get me wrong, the jokes and puns are funny enough (although at times heavy handed), but I'd like to see a bit more. Still, it was a -somewhat- enjoyable experience. ▰▰▰▰▰▱▱▱▱▱
Jesus Christ I have both SD cards and the DVD so HOW in God's name do I use the SD card on the computer?! I've played every adventure game from Zork to Tex Murphy to Maniac Mansion all of which contain various interfaces and even though I took the tutorial which the game wouldn't even get me complete, this interface is clunky the game's pacing and sense of humor is painfully slow. It's also lame that you have to trigger a certain object in order to do the puzzles meaning you just wander around the scene aimlessly repeating the same thing over and over. Shame because the graphics are beautiful.
