A Delightfully Tactical Satirical Adventure
When it comes to charming, easy-to-learn turn-based strategy games, Super World War feels like a playful nod to the classic Advance Wars—tailored perfectly for both newcomers and jaded veterans hungry for a lighthearted tactical romp.
PROS
Nostalgia with a Twist The hex-grid combat, compact units, and overall strategic pacing evoke fond memories of Advance Wars on Game Boy. But Super World War leans into this with a fresh, comedic flair—bloodless mayhem unleashed with a wink and a wink only. Sarcastic, Over-the-Top Storytelling The death of “Theorn BrunceWald, President of the World,” sets the stage for an absurd political free-for-all. It’s satire at its best—campy, chaotic, and unashamedly overblown. Campaign That Delivers With multiple leaders vying for global domination and scenarios rich in tactical variety, the campaign engages through both strategy and personality. As the story unfolds, shifting weathers and dynamic maps keep each battle feeling fresh. Accessible, Relaxed Gameplay The turn-based design is intuitive, offering low-pressure pacing—especially in Single-Player mode. Great for newcomers or anyone in the mood for chill strategizing, without feeling overwhelmed. Perfect for Casual Sessions Whether you're bringing AI’s forces to heel or challenging friends with local or online multiplayer, up to four players can join in. The outcome? Quick, fun, and endlessly replayable skirmishes. Lots of Modes, Lots of Maps With lot of maps and a mix of game modes (solo, local, co-op, PvP), the replay value is strong—even if some modes are still in rough shape.
C*ONS
Some Phases Can Drag Certain gameplay stages feel a bit extended—strategic, yes—but can slow the pace. Pen the perfect flank or outwit an opponent, and the wait might test your patience. Spirited Modes, Uneven Finish Creative game modes are plentiful, but a few feel like they bypass polish—minor UI quirks and rough edges in online or local setups are noticeable. Still, the ambition is clear and promising. Tutorial Could Be Smoother While the game is generally accessible, some might find the tutorial a bit underwhelming. A more guided introduction could help newcomers ramp into the satire-driven world more comfortably.
Final Verdict
Super World War is a vibrant, tongue-in-cheek love-letter to turn-based tactics, merging retro appeal with modern indie charm. Its sarcastic storytelling, varied maps, and flexible gameplay modes make it an excellent pick for casual strategists and nostalgic gamers alike. Yes, some segments could benefit from tighter pacing and polish—but the core is engaging, fun, and absolutely worth your time. If you're craving nostalgia with a smile and strategy that doesn't take itself too seriously, this is a warm recommendation.
Nice turn based tactical game. This one won't be a revolution for this kind of game but it have a great game and character design and work well on steamdeck! This game seems to be fun with a ton of subtil references to pop culture and geek universe. A good caricature of the world : stupid peoples making war for stupid reasons. Worth the price.
Better than I expected, considering it's a new license from a small studio. I was drawn to the colorful art style and the characters, and I must admit that I really enjoyed the story mode. The humor makes the game interesting and keeps you coming back to advance the story. I was able to quickly test the multiplayer mode with a friend. I think the games can be long if there are four players, but the two of us had a lot of fun. We were able to fight each other and surprise our opponent with the Super Weapon, which was great. It was my first time playing a turn-based strategy game, and I think it's a good introduction. There are still a few improvements to be made, particularly when you've already played a unit, it should be more visible, so I'm waiting to see what will be offered in future updates. Otherwise, it's a very nice game!
I play few turn-based strategy games on my free time, and I can say that Super World War is truly at the top of its class and deserves much more visibility. It's far better balanced than Warside, and more tactically interesting than Wargroove or Tiny Metal. I also have the game on Nintendo Switch, but I got it on PC as well so I can play it on my laptop at work when bored. I played through the campaign on Switch, and I only use the PC version to play skirmishes in my spare time, but the game is exactly the same on both platforms. The pros: + The characters are really funny and I love Pope-Man. + The campaign scenario is way much funnier than what we usually get in this kind of game. + The combat animations are also very funny, with an “over the top” gore factor reminiscent of South Park. + Local multiplayer is always a nice bonus. + A large number of game maps, offering a lot of strategic variety. + The game runs quite smoothly on a low-powered configuration such as my laptop. The cons: - The music is a bit boring and repetitive. I turned it off and put on my own on PC. - The troops movements animations are weird. - Graphically, the game is perhaps too simple. A little more details overall would have been really nice. - Online servers are nearly empty : not enough players. You need friends to play online. Overall, game is a solid 8.5/10
