Reviews
I'm a few hours in, but seeing that the game has no actual reviews at the moment I feel inclined to offer my thoughts. I've beaten the tutorial and the first handful of missions of the 1st campaign, so take this with a grain of salt as there's still much to explore. This game has been an entertaining game thus far, that's clearly been inspired by titles such as Advanced Wars, Wargroove, or Tiny Metal, but attempts to put their own spin on things. As an avid tactics fan (check out some of my other reviews) I feel that my money was well spent so far with this title. It does have a hex grid as opposed to the square maps of advanced wars which adds some fluidity and makes it much easier to push units through lines and holes to target the right enemy to do the most damage. There is a combo attack bonus against units, so if you strike them repeatedly with smaller units they will start taking more damage for the same attacks... or if you feel yourself clever, do a couple attacks to boost the combo before sending the unit that's strong against that enemy to boost your damage and take out tanks and vehicles without having to use two teams of bazookas. Each leader has their special powers. There is a variety of different types of buildings you can capture, the towns and cities come in multiple sizes. There are different types of barracks, warehouses, or factories that produce different units across the map. The only units you can build in your HQ (in my experience) is basic riflemen. You must capture or start with other facilities to build other units. There are also some special capture points that can cause certain affects, but I'm not sure of the depth and variety in the game yet. This all sounds pretty standard fare, so where does it shine? In my opinion, the writing and art, especially with the campaign. The game doesn't take itself at all seriously and it recognizes this and turns it up to 11. There is a sleeping grandma that murmurs the whispers of Cthuhlu in her sleep, a cowardly King that tries surrendering who gets tricked by his butler into war, and a whole host of other dastardly flunkies and fools. I turn 38 today, I've seen so many games and so much so-so writing to skip through, but this stuff has actually been a delight and I've had a great time with the campaign so far. Some of the animations can be slightly janky, like how infantry hold their rifles or some of the death animations, but some of them are quite chuckleworthy and over the top as well. This is forgivable as these games are about the tactics first and the art second. We end up skipping all the battle scenes anyways... Well actually I might want to give more time to look for easter eggs in the background like the tractor doing donuts in the field. All in all, I give it a 7.5-8/10. I'd imagine if this does well and the dev gives Super World War 2 a go that one will be a solid 9/10. I figured the dev likely deserved a review for all of his hard work and I'm absolutely delighted that I took the plunge. Great stuff, I'll be looking forward to finishing the game.
As I publish this review I just played the first chapter and a few skirmishes and yeah, I’m in love. I probably won’t sink as many hours into it as I did with Advance Wars when I was younger, especially as I now have a job ; but it totally recaptures the feeling of this game, with the addition of nice twists (plus purple cows). The only thing I miss before I hit that Multiplayer button is a unit glossary or a wiki with all the details on terrains, units, damage formulas, etc. as I really hate losing :D
While not revolutionizing the genre, this game is really fun and has quite deep strategic mechanics. It also has an overall satirical tone that I particularly enjoy ^^
No manual save, no automatic save during the tutorial. Which means I just wasted 40 minutes of my life because I had to close the game. Really? Such a basic QoL feature missing?
