I LOVE the art style of this game and the combat, I gave this game up for a while and tried picking it back up - it seems like its impossible to find where to go next. I understand having a not-completely-linear game creates a lot more freedom for the player, but I wish there was a better indication of what to do next. Or maybe there is and I dont see it, but I've given up on this game.
Quirky and fun. I really enjoyed this game.
I played this a long while ago, but I never got around to reviewing it until now. The term “No other game quite like it” is bandied around a fair bit, but this game genuinely earns that term. SDD is one of the most refreshingly weird games I have ever played, and I really wish I could re-experience it for the first time again. Gameplay-wise, SDD is a very good RPG Metroidvania that has a fun cooldown-based combat system, which encourages you to weave together a lot of different abilities rather than just spamming one or two like in other similar games, and while the exploration can be slightly obtuse sometimes, it really rewards deductive reasoning and memorisation of the places you go. If the gameplay was all there was to go on, it would be good already, but where it really shines is the way it’s presented. I don’t want to spoil much more than what is shown in the trailer, but the visuals of the game are absolutely fantastic – There is an ongoing surrealist comedy vibe through the backgrounds and character design, and it makes the whole thing pretty unforgettable. The writing of the game is also very good, with a story that ended up being surprisingly gripping, especially towards the ending. There’s also a lot of comedy in the game, but this is where I need to point out a bit of a flaw: The sense of humour can be quite polarising. Depending on the sort of humour that you enjoy, the game will either be a continual riot, or the running gags will start to grate on you long before the end of the game. To specify, if you dislike the styles of humour where
the vast majority of the cast are awful people towards the protagonist and they never get any comeuppance for it
,
a problem is caused or worsened because the protagonist is unable/unwilling to say anything
, or
the game forces you to do a bad thing and then repeatedly admonishes / comedy-guilt-trips you for it
, the game might get on your nerves a bit. I did find these annoying, but the strength of the rest of the writing, visuals, and gameplay made up for it. Also, there is one legitimate complaint that I have with the game. Many Metroidvania games encourage you to explore everywhere once you’re fully kitted out, and SDD is no different, but there’s a pretty notable issue: Once you reach a certain point in the story, the music in the main hub area completely vanishes, and it makes a lot of the exploration feel very sterile. What’s worse is that the game locks you into an ending sequence, but gives you an opportunity to go back to before the endgame situation occurs, but this “point of no return reversal” puts you at a point after the music goes away. This might not be a dealbreaker to most, but it did dampen the experience a bit. If you are interested in the game and feel that this music-loss would be a problem for you, I strongly suggest you make a hard-save after defeating the boss at the end of the quest
”Target: History”
. These are, however, small nitpicks in a game I absolutely adored. I played it a long while back, but after making this review, I intend on giving it another fresh playthrough. Highly recommended.
游戏玩起来还行,但是大量对话是一个严重的挑战。游戏似乎就一种语言,勉强给个好评吧~
A truly deep and personally crafted platform beat 'em up. This game oozes style and a truly insane story that slowly rolls out if you take time to see all it offers.
挺有创意的 但是没中文
Don't by this crash happy game! I played this game coop, and we experienced many crashes. The worst one happened right at the freaking end of the final boss of the game. Meaning we had to redo the entire, multi-phase fight! And to further add salt to the wound, there's a lengthy, unskippable cutscenese that plays before the final phase. Thankfully, that crash and MOST of the other crashes didn't happen again after we re-launched the game. However, one crash kept happening and almost soft-locked our entire run. We had to install the game on a different machine to get past that frustrating run. Also, there's no auto-saving in this game. Meaning, you have to save at save points. Meaning if the game crashes and you haven't saved in a while, then guess what you have to do? Aside from the crashing crap, another issue is that the combat in this game isn't good. This is a game where enemies will keep spawning in the area, and they love to swarm and gang up on you. And while there is invincibility frames when you get hit, its still very easy for you to lose most or all of your health very easily. This is also one of those games where you can't aim your attacks, and flying enemies REALLY love to come at you in angles which make them difficult to hit. Also, this is one of those games where if you aren't at the correct level and don't have the correct equipment, you will get killed very easily. So, expect to grind. The platforming is also a bit fiddly. While platforming isn't a major part of the game, when it is needed, it's not all that fun. As for the story, it is admittedly funny at times, but in like the last half or third, it gets VERY exposition and lore heavy. And this is not one of those plots that should not be very lore heavy as its pretty stupid and cliché. So, while I was fine with it at first, I was getting tired of it by the end. Also, the ending is incredibly anti-climatic (which combined with the crashing issue we experienced made the whole thing crappy). The game does at least nail the indie/high school/punky/Napoleon Dynamite style, but that is NOT enough to redeem all the crap we endured. DO NOT BUY!
Super Fun
