Sunset Drive

Gentle drive into the sunset, visual novel style game, sounds simple right? Sure. But I feel that the journey and quiet reflection along the way was why I kept going. This is exactly the kind of game I would play when I want to kick back, relax, and enjoy the beautifully drawn art.

Very nice game, the puzzles were nice and enjoyable to do, I really liked the dialogue and reading it, overall it was an enjoyable experience in the right amount of time, hope more users get to experience and play this game, as the art in this video game looked really nice and had great effort to detail put into them.

Sunset Drive ist eine Mischung aus Visual Novel und Puzzle-Spiel (im wahrsten Sinne von Puzzle, nicht im Sinne von Rätsel). Man klickt sich durch eine kleine Geschichte und darf an gewissen Stellen ein klassisches Puzzle zusammensetzen. Das Ganze ist ein sehr simples Spiel, das gemischte Gefühle hinterlässt. Einerseits ist es sehr entspannt und in 30 bis 45 Minuten locker durchgespielt. Andererseits wirkt es irgendwie belanglos und hat ein paar spielmechanische Schwächen. Belanglos ist es deshalb, weil die Geschichte eigentlich ziemlich nichtssagend ist. Zwei Freunde sind unterwegs zum Strand und reden über das Leben, die Welt und sich selbst. Okay. Nett. Aber eben auch nicht mehr. Echter Tiefgang oder Überraschungen gibt es nicht. Spielmechanisch ist das Ganze solide. Die Puzzles sind ok, aber eben auch nichts mehr als Puzzles. Das grösste Problem sind aber ein paar echte Schwächen. So darf man auf keinen Fall ins Hauptmenü zurückkehren, sonst verliert man seinen Fortschritt. Mir ist das aus Versehen passiert, und das hat mich riesig frustriert. (Zwar kann man das Spiel komplett beenden und später ungefähr da weitermachen, wo man war, aber trotzdem ist die Funktion einfach dämlich.) Zusätzlich muss man die richtigen Gesprächsoptionen wählen, wenn man alle Orte sehen und jedes Puzzle lösen will. Das schafft man kaum in einem Durchgang. Und weitere Durchgänge sind ziemlich mühsam. Ja, man muss die Puzzles dann nicht nochmals machen, aber es gibt auch keine Möglichkeit, direkt an bestimmte Orte zu springen. Stattdessen darf man das Gespräch im Schnelllauf durchspulen, was trotzdem noch zäh ist. Das hat bei mir schliesslich dazu geführt, dass ich nicht alle Orte gesehen habe, weil ich schlichtweg keinen Bock hatte, mir das Ganze nochmals anzutun, um dann vielleicht trotzdem wieder nicht dort zu landen, wo ich noch nicht war. Das alles macht die Endbewertung wirklich schwierig. Sunset Drive ist beileibe kein miserables Spiel, aber es bleibt halt auch belanglos. Ein klassischer Fall, wo es eigentlich einen Daumen in der Mitte bräuchte. Trotzdem: Es ist kurz genug, sympathisch gemacht und funktioniert im Rahmen seiner Möglichkeiten. Darum gibt’s am Ende doch noch eine Empfehlung mit klaren Abstrichen. Fazit: Wer ein ruhiges Spielerlebnis mit entspanntem Puzzle-Zusammensetzen sucht, bekommt hier eine kurze, charmante, aber auch sehr flache Erfahrung. Mit Vorbehalten empfohlen.

Probably the chillest game for me recently. You just play and follow the story of this love bird. Simple puzzle, wholesome story, chill dialogue and music. Sunset drive makes me want to experience driving on sunset irl with my wife. :D

A captivating visual novel with a linked to puzzle solving bit by bit. Good and natural narrative defines the complexities yet simplicity of relationship between characters.

A lovely little game, definitely worth a play. The art style is gorgeous and the conversations feel genuine. I only wish that there was more, because it is so sweet.

Cozy game about road trip to play with your spouse. Suddenly your spouse asking for real trip instead of the digital one 🤣 Played in Steam Deck and PC, for Steam Deck, need to update the control especially for the puzzle.

* I would like to thank Klapanom Games for providing a review copy of this game * Sunset Drive is a heartwarming and emotional narrative experience that takes the gamer on an apparently cozy road trip along several stops particularly meaningful for the young couple you play as and with. I HIGHLY recommend playing the game until all 8 scenarios/detours are unlocked and you get the true ending. You will realize how this experience is way deeper than what initially thought, and it will make you reflect and ponder in a way you didn't think possible in such a cozy game. In terms of gameplay, it's more of a visual novel, with light elements of challenge provided by jigsaw puzzle minigames you have to complete in between chapters to unlock beautiful pictures of the scenarios explored. Yet, the bulk of the adventure is choosing dialogue options to unlock one of the multiple endings. I think the game would benefit from a saving system, as well as from some proofreading of the English script, but it is well crafted, with a beautiful hand-drawn art style and pleasant music.
