Spring Is the Season of First Meetings.
On the advice of his older sister, Touki transfers into Ainoshima Gakuen in the middle of the spring term. His heart is full of expectation of a new life in the city of Tokyo, a vast contrast to the countryside that he grew up in.
As he begins to settle into his new life, he encounters fresh faces in the student council president, Ayumi, and an underclassman who admires her, Kuon. What Touki was not expecting was to converge paths with Saya, his childhood friend from a few years ago, who he hadn’t talked to since a certain incident.
To make matters more complicated, a mysterious transfer student arrives shortly after. She seems to loathe him immediately and Touki feels that he has met her somewhere before.
Within the chaos of the present and the mystery of the past that is chasing him, there is uncertainty in the air as he forges a path towards his future and his desire to connect with others.

From emojis displaying when characters are in a certain mood, to the CG Inspection Mode that turns a static background into a point-and-click scenario, Tokyo Re:Connect aims to deliver mechanics that go beyond the norm.

Well, Tokyo Re:Connect immediately had my interest due to its gorgeous artwork and unique premise with the CGs, but I will come back to that aspect later. Anyway, I expected a generic dating sim with a lot of slice-of-life elements and although the full game is not available yet, so it's hard to judge whether my assumption is accurate, I have the feeling that this game still has one or two twists that might end up surprising me. Nevertheless, I'm always down for playing a game that implements adorable girls and, in that sense, Tokyo Re:Connect hit all the right boxes. It's important to mention that this version is only the prologue of Tokyo Re:Connect and only shows the first part of the final game. Anyway, the Kickstarter for this visual novel, unfortunately, got canceled and, along with this, the whole game as well. Thus, it's unlikely for this game to get a full release for now.
Welcome Back…
Tokyo Re:Connect revolves around Touki Shindou who transfers to Ainoshima Gakuen. You see, he used to live in a city in Tokyo and moved back to the countryside where he grew up. Of course, he meets a lot of people during his stay in the new school, however, he also happens to stumble across his childhood friend. Not having talked to her for years, the reunition turns out rather awkward, although the fault seems to be an incident in the past. Anyway, there is a mysterious transfer student who enrolled in the same school as well, however, Touki has the feeling that he met her previously.
What Kind of Vibe Does This Game Give Off?
So far, Tokyo Re:Connect seems like a visual novel that throws in a bunch of cute girls and follows Touki's life as he is trying to adjust to the new environment. However, during the introduction of the cast, it's evident that some mysteries are lingering in the past that didn't get revealed yet, although I'm quite curious about the incident with the childhood friend, as well as the new transfer girl. Anyway, it seems like this visual novel has something up its sleeve which might catch me off-guard. Sadly, the prologue is over before any reveals, and the reader is left in the dark. In a sense, this prologue solely feels like an introduction to the characters. Everything it revolves around is Touki meeting one girl after another and while snippets of their personalities are getting shown here, the game doesn't go in-depth with any of them which is understandable given this is an unfinished product. Anyway, I feel like this game just revealed enough to keep the reader interested in finding out more about the mysteries.
Interactive CGs
A special feature here is that the player can actually interact with the CGs in this game. When a CG gets displayed, the player has the possibility of selecting various objects to inspect them or simply talk to the girl to go on with the story. In all honesty, whilst I found it pretty cool at first, I stopped investigating the objects pretty soon as I didn't feel like they contributed much to the main story. Nevertheless, it's a unique feature I never occurred in a visual novel so far, although it doesn't have an important purpose. Luckily, it's optional to use so I could simply talk to the girls instead.
Graphics, English Voice-Acting, and The Immersion
Graphics-wise, Tokyo Re:Connect is gorgeous. Something I immediately noticed is that the main protagonist's sprite looks like he could be a love interest from an otome game as well. Without judging any character, I often feel like the male characters that are supposed to appeal to the female audience have a different style. Anyway, the girls' sprites are high-quality as well with multiple facial expressions which made them feel lively. A minor complaint I have is that the one of the guy's sprite looks slightly off due to their body proposition. So, let's move to the next point, the English voice-acting. Something I found very weird is that whilst the voice actors are talking in English, there are still Japanese terms getting thrown in like onee-san. To make it worse, it's not even pronounced correctly and interrupted my immersion as it simply doesn't fit the English language. Nonetheless, the voice-acting doesn't sound high-quality either and the soundtracks are way too loud so I had to greatly turn them down in the settings to be even able to listen to the voices. Talking about the settings, there is the option of setting the game to a high quality. However, it only changes the quality of the font. This becomes greatly noticeable when the font is crisp and clear while images with text, such as the saving or loading option are blurry. Anyway, I couldn't select the 4k resolution either, despite using a 4k monitor, and the maximum I could use in fullscreen was 1440p.
So, what do we have in the end?
I had high hopes for Tokyo Re:Connect but, unfortunately, I don't think this project will get completed, at least definitely not in the near future. Nonetheless, those who are curious should certainly check out the prologue and despite offering an uncompleted story, I am still utterly interested in the mysteries. I sincerely hope that Tokyo Re:Connect will get released in the future, however, I will, without a doubt, check out future games of Koneko as I am positive Tokyo Re:Connect might have turned out to be a hidden gem if it got a full release.
Looks like a pretty high quality game and they really tried to put in a lot of different features and small extras and stuff. Maybe even a bit too much overall, but it looks pretty decent for now. But I also have a few problems with it. The Audiosettings are not working properly at least the Voice Volume isnt for me and some of the Sentences, that are voiced, are just cut of mid sentence. I also am not a big fan if a VN that has english Voice Acting then tries to act japanese and uses words like Senpai and stuff cause it just doesnt fit if you go for the english route. I really appreciate that they cater to all the different Resolutions which a very small amount of VNs do and it looks like they really are trying to make this game as good as possible. Not sure whats gonna happen though as the kickstarter didnt get the money they wanted. For now keep an eye on the game as it really does have a high chance of being good if and once it comes out Check out my Curator Page: https://store.steampowered.com/curator/34401214/
Note: This is a review of the game’s prologue
Tokyo Re:Connect Prologue is the first part of Tokyo Re:Connect Dating Sim. A relaxing game with occasional point & click elements, characterized by colorful art and peaceful background music.
Plot:
You play as Shindou Touki, a high-school student who just moved to Tokyo from the town of Saga. The first things that come as certain is the difference between his hometown and Tokyo, where neighbors do not seem to be as approachable and friendly. On the way to school, however, you stumble upon a familiar face, who appears to be your childhood friend who had to leave Saga way before you did – at the early age of 7. After recognizing you, she appears to be way colder, to have changed besides having grown. While struggling with not concerning your mind too much on your first day at the Ainoshima Academy, you end up meeting a lot of new faces; classmates, teachers and other scholars. Each one of them appears to be very welcoming and pleasant to be around. Until… a mysterious girl appears who seems to present questionable matters towards you and joins your class. What happens if the closest person you used to have by your side doesn’t have the same intentions as you, to keep the cherished relationship as before? Who is the mysterious girl and what has your presence done to the point of generating such a displease?
Characters: (to be updated…)
The protagonist of the story is presented revealing his face during the dialogues. Shindou Touki appears to be an outgoing and friendly character, however deep inside is quite antisocial and prefers spending time alone than struggling with interpersonal relationships. Touki has an important hobby which he has carried since childhood – reading, and that is what pushed him to re-open the school’s Literature Club.
Featurings:
Tokyo Re:Connect presents lovely art-style and pleasant backgrounds composed of bright and multi-colored palette. CGs are well-made and present the possibility to interact with them by clicking on various details, both in order to proceed with the story and to know more about the character you are interacting with and what the protagonist does think about them. The story and dialogues are quite enjoyable and entertaining, however, given the English voice acting I personally found slightly out of place the usage of Japanese suffixes and terms such as “Senpai” et cetera. Particularly appreciated the bright side the narration conceives overall, despite dealing with upsetting topics as well. The background music is very soothing and sound effect noises such as rain will appear occasionally. A lot of characters will be presented, however bearing connections among them, the experience won’t result confusing. Quite the opposite in fact – it will result as entertaining and pleasant. This little prologue offers a lot of menu options, which personally appeared confusing at first. A little suggestion would be to lower the background music in order to hear properly the dialogues, elseways the voice acting results overlapped and is difficult to hear and follow. It is possible to unlock in-game achievements while progressing with the story. In conclusion, high expectations come to this game, given the quality that has been put in this part of the prologue.
Overall:
Recommended to public seeking for a bright-colored high school story with quality art and music. Not recommended if you’re looking for a depressive story or horror elements. Great game about a guy who found after a few years his childhood friend.
Tokyo Re:Connect shows a lot of promise, the art and character design is obviously beyond fantastic, the writing is great, and from what I've seen in this decently sized prologue the characters seem interesting enough and I feel the story could take a shift to a much darker tone which would be pretty cool. I did run into a few issues like the resolution not going to 4k, and the voiceover volume being linked to the BGM which was frustrating as I found the BGM overpowered the VO in many scenarios. Also regarding the VO I did find a few fudged lines like the teacher using the wrong prefecture name when talking about Saya, and while the games does use honorifics when the characters speak which is a little odd but it's thankfully never taken to the point of actually replacing English words with Japanese ones for no reason, outside of those minor complaints the voiceover was pretty good. After giving this prologue a shot I can say with confidence I'll be looking forward to playing the full game (if/when it releases) and would highly recommend at least checking out this prologue if you have a few hours to kill.
Overview
Once again, ol' Il Pallino finds himself reviewing a demo game. Thankfully, Tokyo Re:Connect Prologue does a better job of selling the player onto the game compared to the previous demo game that was reviewed. The visual novel starts nine years in the past with Touki (The main character) having to say goodbye to female friend Saya and entrusts the friend with a book before she moves away. The visual novel skips ahead the present where Touki has relocated to the Tokyo area, and finds himself in a new school, and in predictable fashion, Saya also happens to go to this school, only Saya turns out to be totally distant with Touki. During lunchtime, Student Council President Ayumi points out how participating in an extracurricular activities club is "highly encouraged," and gives Touki subtle encouragement to reopen school's Literature Club which has been dormant for some time, and in equally predictable fashion, it just so happens that Touki is interested in books.
Graphics and Sound
The female characters all rank in the high 7's on the Kawaii-O-Meter, so while not Kindred Spirits on the Roof level of kawaii, people who think pictures in visual novels are the best part of the story will be impressed. The music all fits the mood yet doesn't come across as something the player won't go out of their way to hear again. The in-game sounds are basic and come across as unremarkable yet being a perfect fit to the scenes in question.
Corner-Cutting Index: 5.89
The two biggest knocks against the game, is that there aren't any "special scenes" encountered. (At least not in the Prologue.) However, the large number of background pictures compensates well for the lack of special scenes. The heart and star floaters that appear around characters helps with setting the mood and better feeling the emotions of the characters, but there are scenes where the facial expressions do not match the description of the character. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2248387695
Positives
For a demo game, the Prologue does a much better job of selling players onto the game compared to the Car Trader Simulator demo. Rather than just merely having to read what the main character sees, the player gets a choice in looking at who the main character is conversing with... Or just skipping the looking around and talking to the other person. This feature is a unique mechanic to visual novels, and ol' Il Pallino has "played" a lot of VN's! (Though it is possible that this feature may have been encountered in other VN's; ol' Il Pallino doesn't have time to play every VN ever made!!) https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2248387568
Negatives
Despite being voiced, the VN is only partially voiced. The voice artists tend to recite only part of the dialogue displayed on the screen, and there's a number of scenes where voice artists speak like they read the dialogue for the first time without any prior rehearsal.
Conclusion
The worst two things about having to review demo VN's that aren't trashy: No telling what's going to get removed from this review to fit the "tinier than the IQ of a Trump loyalist" constraints of a demo game, but only reviews to trashy VN's make for good reading. (Just check out the reviews ol' Il Pallino wrote for Negligee and Breeding Village if you disagree!)
The honest word of Il Pallino...
