apr 2022 edit: complete gfx overhaul and some changes, edited the review. subcube isn't your typical cube-rolling game, as instead of rolling cubes, your goal is to create them by moving their tetris-shaped pieces around. for starters, 2x2x2 will do, but it soon turns into 3x2x3, which isn't a cube, but close enough. both keyboard and mouse work for controls, but I'd recommend the former, or maybe a combination of both. wasd and the arrow keys roll the currently selected piece, which can be changed by space or enter, backspace is unlimited undo, 'q' and 'e' rotate the playing field and you can restart by pressing 'r'. cubes can be created anywhere you like (or can), there's no timer, only a move limit serving as a rating system. if you succeed within the initial limit, you get gold, twice as many for silver, three times for bronze, and you can continue even after that. there are 123 levels in puzzle mode, grouped into pages of 20 (plus 3 at the end) and a page unlocks with each level available to play after every 5 levels completed. no new mechanics down the road, only trickier and trickier shapes to deal with. infinite mode is also available and it's a bit more tetris-like, though your goal is still creating cubes or cube-likes, as small as 2x2 is accepted. decide where to place the current piece as it appears with the space bar, then start moving and rotating it as usual, and after 12 moves, or sooner if you want and press space, the next one (which can be seen in the corner) has to be placed, then you can switch between them as you please. the game looks really good after the revamp that happened years after release, sound effects are okay, nothing annoying, and I liked the music. there are separate volume sliders, windowed mode with a resizable window and an interactive how to play section. I'm not good at 3d puzzles and I found this especially difficult, but I still managed to unlock every level and solve about half of them, though a lot were below bronze. still better than I expected, and if you're into 3d puzzles yourself and/or like a good challenge, definitely give it a shot, the price is very reasonable as well, even outside a sale.
If you like cube puzzles and a relaxing atmosphere then this game is for you.
Played on Steam Deck. My spatial puzzle solving is apparently not up to the task because after getting gold, which I think is minimum moves, on the first page of puzzles I just could not solve any more. There are so many possibilities for combinations of moving each of the 4 or 5 pieces that with no fixed points it becomes overwhelming to even tell if you're on the right track or not. Some sort of hint system would be nice, on a one minute cooldown perhaps highlighting the piece that should be moved next, or showing an outline of where that piece should end up, just anything to be able to get the puzzle started. I may just be bad at this but I really wanted to like it.
Subcube unveils all of its tricks right away so you will either fall in love with it or move on after a few attempts. The objective is straightforward: roll and combine shapes on the floor to create a cube or a rectangle. While a gamepad can be used to play the game, I found that using a mouse and keyboard was far more convenient. It is faster to select the desired shape with a mouse rather than toggling between all of them by hitting a gamepad button. The playing field can be rotated as well. A minor nitpicking here is that one side contains extra detail, such as a wall or a tree, which might obscures the shapes. The two extra options are infinite undo, which comes in handy if you make an extra move by accident, and a reset button, which is useful if you lose track of all the pieces so badly that it's easier to start over. Playing too many stages in a row might tire you out, just like in any other puzzle game. You may think to yourself "This isn't that tough" after completing the first few puzzles. However, the game quickly adds new shapes that require a lot of maneuvering around the field to fit together. The fact that you have to roll the shapes into place makes it even more difficult. Lots of times you’ll have the shapes on the right spot but turning the wrong way. Despite the move counter, which displays the shortest number of moves required to complete a puzzle, and the medal bar, which fills up with each move, there is no pressure to complete the task within the requirements. You can progress in the game simply by completing the puzzle. You don't even have to finish an entire page to move on; just finish five puzzles and you'll be ready to move on to the next set. I wish there was a way to turn the counter off. Sure, you'll feel good about finally solving the problem, but there's a tinge of disappointment as you glance over the bar, which keeps telling me that I'm only good enough for a bronze medal while the meter shows far more moves than are required. The game will keep you occupied for days with over 100 puzzles. There's an infinite game mode if you don't care about the puzzles and just want to rack up some points. You're still building cubes in this mode, and the bigger the cube, the more points you gain. You now have the option of calling a new random shape at any point. The only thing you need to be concerned with is not cluttering the field, as this will prevent you from moving around. Subcube is a game that is easy to learn yet hard to master. While the difficulty rises dramatically after the first ten puzzles, a casual gamer may still find it enjoyable due to the complete absence of requirements. I don't recommend it to those who get bored easily or are just looking for a quick casual puzzle when they have a few minutes to spare. It's very hard and takes a long time to understand how to move all the different pieces to a spot you want.
A well made puzzle game that feels a bit like the lovechild of Tetris and Edge (or Edge Extended) The music and sound effects are very ethereal and relaxing, which is a good thing as it helps offset some of the puzzle induced frustration. Graphically, it has just enough polish to run well on lower end systems but still looks nice. As the game progresses, I found the target number of moves to be extremely challenging mostly because you don't know where the target shape would have originally been located on the playfield, nor the exact combination of the layout of the pieces in their final configuration. Most of the time I was just blindly moving pieces around hoping for the best until I got close to completion of the shape. The game is probably more suited to the mind of my 10 year old who is quite good at Rubik's Cube. I'd probably like to see a hint system that at least shows an outline of where the final position of the cube is to be located in order to achieve the minimum moves. That probably defeats the purpose of the game a bit, but the move targets seem a bit frustrating without it and perhaps more suited to people who can process many moves in their head in advance. I'd also like to see some pieces that have special functions, perhaps some might be climbable by other pieces for instance (like a magnetic piece where another piece can roll up the side and sit on top. Nice effort.
Subcube is an intelligent game with a certain level of difficulty, especially after the 7th level. In essence, various three-dimensional cubes with different rules appear on the map, and players need to continuously flip these cubes to form the specified shape to complete the level, such as a 2x2 square, a 3x2 rectangle, etc. Each level in the game has three clearance ratings: gold, silver, and bronze. The fewer times the cubes are flipped in each level, the higher the rating. Of course, for players who seek infinite scores, they can flip cubes indefinitely until they complete the specified shape for clearance. The main focus of the game is the level mode, which initially includes 40 levels that can be challenged in any order. There is also another mode called the infinite mode, mainly designed for players to practice the game's logic and training. In summary, the game is highly challenging, especially for players with high intelligence who enjoy brain-burning games. The game supports controllers (controllers are unexpectedly more suitable for playing this game than a mouse, especially for players not accustomed to keyboard games; with a controller, R1 and L1 can rotate the map). Supports resolutions of any ratio, including 21:9 (window mode can freely stretch to any ratio). The game currently supports only English (does not affect gameplay). The game features an achievement system. Suggestions: It is recommended to add the goal target for each level in the upper left or right corner of the screen. Suggest adding the ability to rotate the map with the right mouse button (the selection icon at the bottom left or right corner after the left shelf is hidden is far away, especially in high resolutions; although Q and E on the keyboard can also be used, it is less casual). Suggest adding a hint system, such as adding difficulty levels, with hints in easy mode and no hints in normal mode. Especially after the 7th level, lack of level hints may result in being stuck for a long time or finding it difficult to achieve a gold rating. Suggest adding Steam trading cards (although not entirely controlled by the author and requires coordination with some conditions on Steam). Add Steam Workshop support. Add more language support. Add an online mode, such as the same level, where players can compete to see who completes the level first or with the fewest steps.
Brilliant idea ,reminds me of star trek multidimensional chess . Food for the brain and a great way to pass time .
Great!
Subcube
A 3D puzzle game where you try to make a square using different shapes. It reminds me of old flash games but with better graphics. Nothing crazy but nice for some people if they just want to relax 6/10 For more short reviews check out this: https://steamcommunity.com/groups/Gaming_made_cheap
