I actually wanted to give this game a thumbs up because it's an interesting take at a combo tower defense plus city builder/resource management kind of game. Two problems. One, which is somewhat forgiveable, is that there is a very narrow path to victory. Took me a good dozen games to kind of find the path, but the path is very, very RNG dependent. It's just like, if you don't get a certain tower by a certain time, you just can't win. Or maybe you can somehow, but I have no idea how. That makes it pretty much the opposite of an open-ended tower defense game, it's a "you have to do THIS to survive" game, which is a bit unfortunate. But it's fun enough that I could recommend it anyway. Problem number two is where it I can't recommend it: there's a game breaking bug which someone else had mentioned. I got to wave 71 and hit 'next wave' and... nothing happens. The game acts as though the wave is underway but no monsters spawn so you can't progress further. I've tried everything under the sun to figure it out. Posted multiple times to the forum and nothing. So I'm just stuck. I started the game anew, got back to level 71 and... same thing. So you can't even finish the game. Perusing the forums, it looks like the developer has mentioned he/she wasn't expecting the game to be popular as it is so doesn't really have the time to maintain it the way he/she would like to, which I totally respect, but at the same time, I can't recommend you spend your hard earned money on something that isn't even finishable.

it's good, and I'm really enjoying it, but ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ does the corruption need a nerf/rework. Doubling the health and damage is waaaaay too much, you'll be doing fine then suddenly start getting your ♥♥♥♥ pushed in
Randomly stops spawning enemies at times leaving you unable to progress or even die, kinda doodoo.
Could use an endless mode, could be a tad less punishing on bad RNG, progression gets really slow later on. Otherwise pretty good. Without endless mode has about 8-20 hours of play time I'd estimate before it gets worn out. Worth the price if you like Tower Defense titles.
While the game could benefit from further improvements, what you get for the base price is rather good. While there are meta skills to unlock, they simply increase the number of blueprints available during a run, there are no increases to the base towers outside of during the run itself. The game is, as others have said, very RNG based. While it isn't necessary to have loops in the map, as I have completed maps without them; it is significantly easier to complete a run with one or more loops in the path. So resetting for a loop can be advantageous when learning the game. Hopefully the devs continue to add and expand the content in game. Especially given completing the third node both ends a run and spawns further bits of map with more ruins to explore. It's a solid base that could be considerably improved.
There are usually 1-2 major things that draw people in on the Tower Defense genre, and that's strategy/mazing and number go up. Unfortunately Stronghold Defenders fails at both. There's little to no room for strategy beyond some basic tower placement. And as for number go up, the rate at which you gain towers is very slow, less than 1 tower per round. The power increase of towers is negligible. Beyond this, I think the RNG needs some work and towers need some balance. Pulling nothing but gather buildings repeatedly while spending all your gold on rework. Research upgrades need to be more generalized to "all towers" or something. Rerolling research to never even see a tower listed that you have is awful. Another option would be to only roll upgrades for towers you have. Clearing fog areas is a massive mixed bag, and half the time you feel like you've simply thrown your resources away. Some towers feel absolutely useless, doing minimal damage while also having zero utility. The tech tree clashes with the roguelike elements to encourage you to never upgrade entire paths. The impact of the tech tree isn't there either. And finally the expeditions having RNG changes to fail feels absolutely horrible. The gains you get from them are just barely worth it if you get them the first try. But if you spend 3 turns having workers bang on an expedition with nothing to show for it, you'd have been better off just skipping them entirely and putting your workers into resource gathering buildings. There's something to be said for embracing an RNG element, but the break even point shouldn't require you to win on the first dice roll. However, because the odds go up slightly to win the second try and so forth, it feeds into the gambler's fallacy and encourages you to devote your workers to it more and more, sabotaging your run long-term.
This is a quality tower defense, but as others have mentioned, it's a grindfest. It's based on RNG, so whatever shows up in the cards will determine your outcome. Do not buy this game if you only plan to put in 3 hours or so. I'd say if you're not going to put in at least 10-12 hours, it's just not worth the frustration. It's an addictive TD and your currency is given when you build up your mine, lumbermill or fishing hole. If you don't you can't win. With 5 hours in, I've broken through the clouds twice and the playing field opens up. It's a worthy purchase either on sale or at full price if you're willing to put in the hours. I'm curious to see the developer's next release. https://steamcommunity.com/groups/towerdefensegamesrated
Super good game! Really enjoy it! And awesome music!
It's quitte fun, however, rather short.
