This game is worth the buy if you ask me. I will warn you though - this is not a new game. This is a revised re-release of the original game on steam. If you're expecting modern graphics and maps, you're in the wrong place. This game has some really neat mechanics and game modes that really make it a unique experience. For players of the series, once you get past the differences with SLRR (Less complex engine builds, No tuning individual parts, etc.) it really does shine as it's own standalone game. At first I was expecting something closer to SLRR, but once you get past the differences it's really a solid game. It has a different feel than SLRR, with different balancing. There's some mechanics in this game I really love, and wouldn't mind seeing in SLRR either. That being said, there's some mechanics I would like to see in this game from SLRR too - just with the ability to turn them on/off depending on the playstyle I'm going for. -SL1 vs SLRR- (Mostly based on career mode) + Customization options tied to the career save. More please! + There's extra game modes here! + It feels like the physics are much more reliable. + The suspension being extremely weak off the bat actually made me dive further into how I want to set up my suspension, and how I want it to perform. + Instead of creating the best engine build and running it every time, I'm tuning my engine in different ways depending on the circumstances. Seeing and feeling how each part changes the characteristics of the motor. It really is fun to tinker with. + I'm really looking at the cars before buying them at the dealer, parts vary a lot more even between cars of the same model. I always loved having more varied options. + Unlockable districts? HELL YES. + Physical parts shops?! with DISCOUNTS?! SOLD! +/- Talking to pedestrians? It can be kinda fun sometimes. Though I do wish I could just drive up to cars for races like in SLRR... + Settings menus. For DAYS. More good than bad, for sure. - The engines do lack detail. This threw me for a loop at first, considering my only option for an inline 4 engine is SOHC with 2 differently sized heads (with built-in cams) and 4 differently sized blocks. Only one set of fuel injectors that I can't even change the fuel type on. I would mention clutches and flywheels but.... - Some of the streets are real jagged. Yes, you can still drift through them. But the way the traffic moves is not natural in those parts.. - First person mode in the garage is cool, but it doesn't seem to be very useful. Maybe I just don't know enough about it. - Day/Night cycle.... or lack thereof. - Every part has to be taken off by itself, no unbolting multiple parts at once without prying, and you certainly can't store multiple parts in one inventory slot. Did you want to repair your chassis? Unbolt EVERYTHING. - The sell button will ask you to sell your car if you click it. Not necessarily an issue but a separate button or something for that would be nice. - I would like to see a bigger dealership lot. - There's not a lot of different types of car in this game. There's some workshop content to amend this, but seeing more cars in the base game would be nice. I'm sure there's other things too, but this list is long enough by now lol. I feel like this game really captures the feeling of someone who just got into tuning in the late 90's. It's not perfect, but it is charming. I bought this on sale for 3$, and definitely don't regret it.
A pretty hardcore street racing classic; build cars, street race, conquer the roads and become the #1 driver. When I say it's hardcore I REALLY mean it's hardcore; one serious mistake and your entire career could be in shambles. You definitely need a lot of patience, but I think that's the charm in it. Graphics do look dated and so does the entire aesthetic of the game however it definitely makes up for it in gameplay. If you have previously played SLRR, you may know that there are a lot of instability issues, game crashing, needing to downgrade your game version to get things up and running, etc.. Luckily, this game doesn't have any such issues. Another plus for me is that the developers are pretty active, they seem to actively communicate with the community and work on updates for the game even today, and to me that's another reason I am recommending this gem :) If you like street racing games that simulate every car component to the littlest detail, prefer something hardcore and adrenaline inducing, and don't care about graphics all that much I would say that this is the game to get.
Even older bargain bin classic.now on steam. Its great deal for people that want more SLRR. But It didint click for me like its sequel did
Bought it hoping it would have a lengthier career mode that still holds core to street legal, but it was lackluster, sure some of the mutators make the game VERY hard, same with Junkman mode, but compared to SLRR 2.3.1, lacks a real long career mode that is replayable. I believe I have went through everything the game has to offer with the standard mode within 7-8 hours and the rest is just "make it harder for the player" but instead it should've been just longer with only a few mutators like NOS and Turbos being present all the time, not as mutators in the first place, as they just do make the game feel like Street Legal. However, the gameplay is awesome, the first person and hood cameras are such a blast to look through as you're speeding down the 4th Clans city area over at almost 300 kph. But the better gameplay doesn't excuse yet the lack of actual racing content, it's just beat NPC's that most of the time just crash into the traffic, either flipping or slowing down to a point where you can beat most of them even in a worse car. Until it has an actual story line with some sort of characters, protagonist and antagonist, I feel like whoever is on a coinflip to buy this should wait until a steam sale or wait for the game to get more updates. I'd say the best thing about this game so far is that it is still actively getting developed and updated, so I just had to buy it for the sole reason that a team decided to revive this series so long forgotten in history. But if you don't have any nostalgia about this game, it's going to be a disappointment as of my time of writing. Perhaps if there was more choice in engines for each car that fit from the factory and if you did infact want to fit a larger engine you'd have to pay for an engine bay conversion. Maybe if the map was overhauled with smoother surfaces, more destoryables and if you could organise races with multiple AI racers, not just duels to the top. There just isn't any playability past your first playthrough, it instantly becomes repetitive, even in the car assembly to which SLRR 2.3.1 doesn't suffer as much because I'd feel like it has insane amounts of possiblities not only in the base game but also workshop. Great game though.
For a game that released a whole year before NFSU1, this is surprisingly in depth. Car physics feel really good, good sense of speed, good customisation options, decent sized map and layout. Not a lot of variety in races or progression though. Short but sweet, worth playing in my opinion. Way ahead of it's time for 2002 either way.
Two decade old bargain-bin game that manages to make the entire Need for Speed franchise look like slop lmao
Solid, balanced, and full of energy street racing sim! For me, this is the best street racing game. What do we have here: traffic! collisions & car damage! car repair and upgrades from a first-person perspective! somehow working AI! police chases! And on top of that, we have mod support, cockpit view, and steering wheel support (even with an H-shifter!). The game is are is so full of pros, but there are also some cons: If we compare this with SLRR: Cons: - only one-and-a-half game mode available (SLRR: Drag, Street, ROC, Custom Tracks — 4 game modes) - no tuning part adjustments - slightly arcade RWD car physics Pros: - more “fresh-looking” game engine with tons of settings - better traffic behavior - more street racing, less (or none) drag racing - better balance (no more 400–600 horsepower cars right after the start!) I’ve completed the classic mode of the game in three evenings. I will play more and hope they add TrackIR/VR support - on the street, I need to look around. Also, working rear-view mirrors would be nice.
