An awesome remake with many additions, tweaks and fixes. Whether you played the original SL1 or not, this game is absolutely worth playing. The original game was made in 2002 by Invictus, the concept was groundbreaking, features were unseen before - but the execution was a bit lacking, there were lots of bugs. Luckily this remake fixes all of these issues. Great game, with many challenges added (a few of them are actually somewhat difficult). Still gets regular updates, great developer support. Be sure to try the Junkman carrier - it's a game changer. Absolutely recommended.
Decided to make a new review since my last one wasn't very helpful and was kinda messy. SL1:R is a very fun and very challenging racing game, Invictus and ImageCode have managed to recreate Street Legal using the physics engine of its much more popular sequel, Street Legal Racing: Redline. If you've played that, you mostly know what to expect, but SL1:R has it's own quirks and twists which make it an interesting game to play in it's own right. In SL1:R, much like its sequel, you are given the ultimate freedom in what car you buy and how you wish to modify it. Bodykits, engine and transmission parts, tires, suspension, decals, and custom paint jobs are all available for you to apply as you wish. Before you even get started though the game allows you to tailor your experience to your liking by providing a multitude of career mutators as well as an entire alternate career called "Junkman" where you race for pinkslips instead of cash and have to salvage new parts from opponent vehicles, plus cars in this mode can have any engine swapped into them (haven't tried this mode personally, but I look forward to trying it once I finish my normal career!) If you're coming from SLR:R, You'll notice that the selection of engine parts is a bit more limiting (As you may expect since this is a remake of the previous game), but it's still got plenty of variety and it's still fun to mess with NOS systems, superchargers, turbos, and rev limiters to make a road weapon all your own. The premise of this game is that Valo City has 4 racing clubs, and your tasked with becoming the top racer in each of them by winning races and climbing their ranks. It's not a terribly long career, but it more than makes up for that in its sheer replay value. That leads me to the best part of this game, the racing itself. This game and its sequel give races extremely high stakes unlike any other game in the genre (at least that I've found). Not only are these wager races, but the game has an impressive (and unforgiving) damage and wear system. So the ultimate question is: How hard do you dare push to secure that win? Pushing hard means more tire wear, it means risking damage to the suspension or to the oil pan if you land hard, it means risking an outright wreck, likely totaling your car. And as your opponents get faster and faster, the game demands that you take more risks if you wish to win. Heck just this last time I played I was pushing hard since it was a close race and not only did I cook the tires but I also ended up smashing the oil pan off the car as I crossed the line. Had to get the car towed but I got that sweet $4,000! This game is one that I highly recommend, especially to those who are somewhat tired of modern cookie-cutter racing games. You will wreck, and you will lose races, and there is no "restart race" button. While I do recommend you save early and often, I also recommend you try to roll with the punches a bit, try to only reload if you're truly stuck. You can reload a save every time you lose a race, but where's the fun in that? The ability to keep going and manage to recover despite your setbacks and despite the odds being against you makes the experience that much more satisfying and immersive. (TIP: if you're using a controller, which I recommend, make sure you change the steering linearity in the settings menu, as steering is much too sensitive by default.)
Can't believe I didn't know about this game as a kid, glad I have it now. Old but gold.
I am disappointed. It lacks the engine detail of the original. In the original you could switch cams, in this, its just a complete cylinder head. Is there something i am missing? it instantly felt like a worse game.
Even older bargain bin classic.now on steam. Its great deal for people that want more SLRR. But It didint click for me like its sequel did
Great nostalgic time capsule game , glad they fixed all the old bugs it had and its way more enjoyable now. 2002 all the way!
