This is the best and the smoothest playing of the earlier generation of Strategic Command games. The distortion produced by the lack of hexes is not too severe, and the unit size and density is appropriate in the two main campaign scenarios (the 1914 Call to Arms from the Breakthrough game and the 1917 Fate of Nations from the Great War game). The lack of stacking can sometimes feel a bit ludicrous in the game's WW II iterations, but isn't really a problem here. The weakest link in the game series is the handling of naval warfare: the submarine and surface raider war is handled adequately, but the representation of big fleets leaves a lot to be desired. But the overall naval war feels about right if you remember that you aren't really supposed to attempt a decisive fleet action, you just need to be able to threaten one. The Breakthrough portion of the game package has some very interesting smaller scenarios, even if you aren't covinced that the game engine translates well to a smaller scale. People tend to think of WW I as static and boring, but playing this game will show just how wrong that preconception really is. The Western Front tends to become a static meatgrinder once the trench lines set in, but what playing the game on this scale makes you realize is just how dramatic and interesting the strategic choices were for both sides. (And yes, I've spen less that ten minutes playing the Steam version of this game, but many, many hours playing and modding it when it lived at Battlefront before it migrated to Matrix. Except for one scenario it's exactly the same game).
When you first start this game it does look a bit ,well 2011 to be honest although you very soon realise that it doesn't matter a hoot as this is a splendid wargame. The choice of battles, of wars,of scraps even is marvelous.Feel like giving the Prussians a kicking circa 1870,well I don't like your chances, much, but you can try .Consider yourself a budding Lenin and want Mother Russia red as, you sure can try that and wonder at your unlikely support and allies. There are all the bog standard WW1 battles and a few really obscure ones as well. The choices really are excellent. It runs fine, the foe zip round pretty fast on a good rig, that's a bit of a bugger, but unlike some games that take forever to move there's no long waits here.It is OK.The map that on first glance seemed a bit "old" soon becomes very useful. The various units are fine and interesting. There is help geographically in placing your new units, that's well handled and needed.Yep, this a very fine game.Value for money to,as there are lots of great battles here. Recommended.
The colors look drab, the UI is ancient, but the gameplay is really superb and soon you’ll forget all about the cosmetics. There are campaign modes at Corps scale and scenario/mini campaigns at divisional scale. Breakthrough adds The Franco-Prussian war of 1870, the Balkan War of 1912 and the Russian Civil War. Currently playing my second attempt at Race to Paris - a divisional level game and I am loving every minute of it. After 1914 I’ll try Franco-Prussian or the Eastern Front. Strategic Command Classic: WW1 is worth it even if you have the latest Strategic Command 2 : War in Europe (also a great game).
As a fan of HOI and EU, I was really hoping I would like this game. I don't. The UI is terrible - not user friendly in the slightest. What really grates is the utterly chaotic nature of the game. It is not really clear why a human player is needed at all. The game just seems to do its own thing and very little effort is required to conquer vast swathes of territory. Also, it is really obvious that this game would be more at home in a Cold War/WW3 scenario than in WWI. I don't think uranium mining and missile loadouts were issues that greatly troubled Haig, Foch et al. I'll stick to HOI for the time being and hope Paradox set their minds to creating a version that starts in 1900.
A really enjoyable WWI simulation, without too much micromanagment and with fne historical details on the warfare of the era. AI is quite decent and opposed to many games, not based on cheating.
Great game! Like all the other versions.
Sufffers from the same fault all SC games do: extra damage allocated mainly to the human player, at times bordering on the ludicrous. If you can put up with that, then it's worthwhile. The editor freezes when attempting to update scripts, so appears quite useless. The later SC editors work well enough, this one doesn't seem to want to cooperate. Just not worth the effort to fix.
The best World War One wargame on the market! While the graphics are dated, the mechanics and the AI are excellent. Includes a robust naval game, a good research tree, and a variety of units. On the West Front the game features entrementment slugfest while on the East front is more mobile warfare. This game is going to appeal to those players who are looking for a worthy AI opponent and a game that sticks pretty close to history, and players who are less interested in eye candy. The AI is quite good and uses terrain, entrenchment , and counterattacks well to secure its position. On the offense, it uses its attacks intelligently, using overwhelming force to whittle down strong points and penetration to isolate units. The game does need updating and my hope is that this will be done soon and re-released.
Instead of Belgium,an attack on Italy takes out a major back door threat to Austria. Drive on Genoa cuts off land support of Italy by France and Great Britain . Christmas,1919... France national moral at zero , Russia surrendered and dismembered in 1918, Greece surrendered in summer of 1919 to Ottomans [allowed to take Athens after Austrians cleared capital]...expect France to surrender when turn ends ,Western Front breached at channel by Belgium troops [GB declared war on Belgium] , German breakthrough in center has reached to within 2 hexes of Paris, German,Austrian,Bulgarian breakthrough at Grenoble has surrounded French right flank, French Med besieged .
