Still Life

This is a cult classic point-and-click adventure with a killer atmosphere. The dark, moody vibe and the dual-timeline murder mystery are still intriguing today. The voice acting is solid for its time, and some puzzles are genuinely clever. But oh boy, get ready for some classic "adventure game logic" where solutions make zero sense. The controls feel clunky now, and the ending is famously abrupt and unsatisfying. A must-play for genre fans who love noir, but a frustrating relic for everyone else.

One of my favorite point & click games. It has a mysterious, otherworldly atmosphere that really draws you in. I especially love how it captures the vibe of 90s crime movies dark and moody.

The story, characters, atmosphere, and twists are phenomenal, and while the puzzles can get ridiculously hard/annoying at points, if you can push past that flaw like I did, you've got one amazing adventure game here.

The time I've spent looking for this game since first playing on OG Xbox has been ridiculous, I can't believe I didn't think about looking on here sooner. So glad it just hit me one night, I'm stoked. It's a little glitchy, ngl, some times I just get stuck and it doesn't make sense clicking the same darn thing and stuff doesn't work. But all in all, I still like this game very much.

Story is pretty good. Characters are mostly likable. Main problem is that there isn't much gameplay here. You just talk with one character, who tells you to talk to another character, who tells you to talk to another character... Occasionally, you'll have to pickup an item and use it on another item in the vicinity, but there's no real problem solving. The only time you'll really get stuck is if you miss an object and then have to wander around till you find it. It seems the developers were aware of the lack of puzzles, so they compensated by throwing in one utterly baffling puzzle per chapter. Several of these have no good explanation for why they exist. My favorite of these was a cooking puzzle where you had to stop in-between murder investigations to bake cookies for your father, using a pretentious recipe that coded every ingredient into things like "love" or "generosity". A lot of trial and error and some bruteforcing was needed on all of these.

I do not care much for puzzles, but the visual and sound design supports an interesting story and vibe. I also think the game is just the right length (about 10-15 hours). Thumbs up

Subjective Review If not for the strangely difficult puzzles I'm sure I would've finished this one in 12 hours; some of them are extremely difficult and I needed to go back to places in order to gather objects and information I had missed; and even then, when going back to the puzzle, would find I was still missing something and had to scour the areas for more clues (make sure to keep reading the updates to your journal). This was not fun. However, the story is very good and the game mechanics (not counting the puzzles) are really very good. There is an "action" part where you must guide a robot through lasers which could be difficult for some, but I found it to be quite enjoyable. Good voice acting, graphics are okay, music is fine. It served as a sequel/prequel for me, because I finished Post Mortem, then Still Life 2, before playing this.

I originally played Still Life back in 2015 and recently decided to replay it. I'm happy to say that I enjoyed it just as much this time around. Even though it's an older point-and-click adventure game I honestly don't have much to criticize. The story is excellent, the atmosphere is great, and the soundtrack is fantastic. Yes, some aspects show their age but that's simply how games of that era were designed, and it never bothered me. For me, it's still a 10/10 experience. I had completely forgotten how the game ended, so replaying it was a nice surprise. The ending also made me interested in finally playing Still Life 2 to continue the story. Overall, I really enjoyed revisiting this game and would definitely recommend it to anyone who enjoys mystery and point-and-click adventure games. Despite its age, it remains a memorable experience.
