I really wanted to like this game and thought it would be better than it is.
An epic piece of sh.i.t + very ugly design
lame, buggy and abandoned... hands off!
This is a proof of concept, not a game. Stay away
A good but a bit unfiniehed one
Steam Squad is a classical tactical war game with a lot of dumb, old school mechanics. The game's presentation can be resumed by reading letters and looking at roughly drawn maps. There is no supporting media coming with the delivery. Well specially after muting the rage inducing soundtrack. First, shot chance percentages make no sense: Classic. On throwing grenades and rockets, you always seem to hit regardless of the odds. I've learn to only fire around 8% chance, otherwise the game would find a way to put some geometry for the darn things to blow up in my soldiers' faces. Firearms on the other hand have a strong tendency to be useless the lower the percentage chance is. A simple thin fence will block all kinds of bullets. If you have your own units anywhere in front of you, point blank range, they'll be hit with 100% accuracy all the time. The game became a complete suck fest of running into horrid behavior and re-rolling by leaving to main menu to restart the levels. Restarting seems to yield the exact same actions too often. There doesn't seem to be any kind of sophistication in the AI of the units you fight. You can finish levels, by finding a path where the enemy remains completely still for all rounds. Level design is painfully dumb. The only way this game makes itself difficult is by giving horrid starting positions with very little options. For example, you need to go through an underground base, and there is no way to cross doorways without getting murdered. The only way to get through is restarting, being lucky. It's the same on every map. You need to suck, restart, suck restart continuously. Technically, the game crashes somewhat frequently in the middle of the action. Forcing more needless restarts. You can't rotate the camera, you can not evaluate if your soldiers are covered or not. There is no explanation on how to configure equipment for your units. The UI is a patchwork of bad ideas and easy things to develop. Steam Squad feels like a cash grab game, unmaintained and not supported by a real development team. There are definitely better tactical games to spend money on Steam. At its regular price, the only way purchasing this makes sense is if you want to donate money to a sales team.
