I've played almost every ship to ship combat game since the early 2000's and FINALLY there's a game that I can come home to after work and just blow sh*t up. Fast, explosive, and completely DESTRUCTIVE. Blow holes in the sides of their hulls, take out engines, surgically remove their weapons and watch as they try to helplessly attack you. One of those rare games that are easy to learn but hard to master. It's PERFECT
Gameplay wise this is a fun game that you can waste plenty of time on but man do i wish it would have more things to kill with? Shipwise theres only 2, it would be nice if we could kill npc ships and be able to use them after certain amount of kills. Weaponwise its also a bit low and you dont get much during your runs sadly. Also i dont think theres more than a single heavy weapon which is sad. I will change this review to positive when more things get added.
this game is absolute worth the pickup- i'm only roughly 5 hours in and it's been very fun :) the art style/visual look of the game is very appealing to me, mixing the "blocky-ness" of other games with similar art styles with surprisingly high visual clarity and appeal; it's essentially a very pretty looking game. gameplay-wise, it's very very easy to pickup and understand. it only took me a singular run to understand pretty much everything there is in regards to its systems/mechanics, though i'm unsure if i missed anything as i decided to skip the tutorial for sake of this review. i'll probably revisit this review if i ever do the tutorial to check to see how well the game explains things to you. content wise, the game seems like a short and sweet game at first, until you actually complete your first run/unlock the other ships and realize the other two ships have dramatically different playstyles to the first one. i'm still going through various loadouts/builds on the first ship as i want to get a better understanding of this one in particular simply because it's fun, but you can essentially take the amount of time spent exploring "all the potential builds" with one ship and pretty much add that same amount of time (if not more) for each ship. i'm still fairly early in as i stated before but surface level, it looks like there's a lot of different stuff you can try out for each ship and each weapon. you can get some pretty crazy stuff going, whether it's missile spam or just saying no and deflecting enemy projectiles back at them, it's very satisfying. the game as far as i'm aware is content complete, but there could be more stuff added down the line. it doesn't feel like the life is getting sucked out of you in regards to "grinding" the game, which in this era is a very nice change of pace. difficulty wise, it's fairly easy initially but once you start completing runs you unlock the ability to add modifiers that make the game a bit more challenging if that's what you fancy. i myself haven't messed with that stuff but i will once i'm familiar enough with the game. performance wise this game will run on a potato, i've had no crashes so far, no stutters, not even a hiccup. this game is absolutely fantastic, worth the $13 if you're wanting a nice, comfy little game. i have you on my radar, devs. i like what you put out, can't wait to see what else you guys make <3 the only critiques i have are that the ship customization in terms of "making it your own" is only colors, which is a little disappointing but i'll live. i'd love to see something akin to kitbashing in the future if possible as that can lead to some very silly ships or dripped out ones. unsure how this would work for this game specifically, but if multiplayer ever gets added, that'd be an absolute blast to play with friends. currently it's only single player so if that's not something you enjoy i'd avoid it.
This is one of those games that just has the PERFECT feel down. Weapons hit just hard enough, enemies are just deadly enough, and movement feels just right. Upgrades are impactful but not annoyingly so, it just slaps! The only thing I could possibly ask for is MORE, more ships, bigger player ships, more weapons, and more weapons slots. But I have a feeling most people who give this game a try are going to be of the same opinion, who wouldn't want more of a good thing! Also I can see the groundwork for an incredible amount of ship options with how smaller fighters and drones seem to work in this possibly allowing for the dev to eventually even have carrier type ships for the player. Hope this game pops off!
Its great fun! love the way you can chomp ships in half. Hidden gem :-)
Good game. Simple to learn. Fun. Addictive. Could use a few improvements though. Meta progression feels slow compared to other roguelikes. More ships, as it stands there appear to only be 3. Or at least ways to expand/modify them. Game world and systems feels a bit shallow, at least compared to games like FTL. I could see a version of this that has full 3d movement, not just 2d like rebel galaxy. Overall 8/10, after a few runs beat the first boss, and unlocked the second ship, would like to see some more depth and faster meta progression. Update: after beating a run I'm not sure how much more this game has to offer as is. For it's price I think it's fair. But I'd like there to be more, I feel like I've run out of new things for the game to show me already. Still recommend, but just don't expect the same near endlessness that something like Hades or FTL provide.
I currently have over 8.5 hours between the demo, playtest, and release. Man, what an absolute blast!! The ship destruction is incredibly satisfying and one of the coolest mechanics I've seen. Bugs are non existent. The graphics and atmosphere are top notch. The space visuals are extremely immersive. All of the ship abilities are very fun and powerful! And the talent tree provides a solid sense of progression. I haven't played anything quite like this. It's extremely unique and thrilling. I'm hooked!
TLDR: Overall, Simple but satisfying is how I'd describe the game. There's meta-progression between each run and lots of explosions and pewpewpewpew more dakka for your spaceship. Overview: Its got that FTL path system with different encounter types. You have a ship with different stats and hardpoints for weapons, which can be switched out or upgraded. There's buffs you can gather if you complete the encounter successfully, and a lot of gratuitous spaceship battles which I'm a fan of. Meta-progression is meaningful. The game might start out hard but once you get a few meta-progression unlocks it gets significantly easier. Remember to use your abilities on cooldown, they're a life saver. Visually the game is solid. Yes, its voxels, but the voxels are small enough and numerous enough that its just satisfying. Cons: One negative is that the number of total different encounter types seems limited, and ship types are limited as well. There's only 3 ships I can see that you can fly. More ship customization, both in the size/shape of your ship as well as hardpoint loadouts, would be great addition. Weapons have massive upgrade trees but are very expensive, and each weapon require its own supply of parts. It is very difficult to get enough upgrades to meaningfully upgrade more than 1 weapon. Shops are also very limited in what they sell so for the most part your starting build is the build you're going to have for the run. More leeway or flexibility for upgrades would be nice to better customize your ship. Maybe fewer resources to do an upgrade, or more upgrade parts?
The game is quite fun, I played the demo a bunch before this released and it still holds up
nice little spaceship roguelite. its a little bare bones but its fun
