Was the game unfinished and abandoned? Yes. More or less. Whether that was his intention or not I don't know. I don't think it was though necessarily. As I understood it at the time the underlying engine of the game stopped being supported. I could be wrong on that. Is the game fun? Yes. Immensely. Does the base game run great in the last official patch? Not really, no. Especially not the further into a save game you play, especially if the 'map' size is set high. That said, this review is a thumbs up. The unofficial officially sanctioned patches/updates of the folks at Blackbox Mod team and the adjacent combined arms mod help correct many of the flaws present, peeling back the rough edges and allowing you to dip your toe in the world of StarDrive. Whether you play a default race, starting as the nascent Terran civilization, the honorable Kulrathi (spacebears), the cold all consuming Opteris, the rapacious Wulfen etc.. or you carve out your own specific space culture to take to the stars, they allow you to hold the reins of a space empire. Explore, fight and most of all.. Customize! Does your dakka need more dakka? Add more dakka! Research bigger dakka! Got the need for speed? Gotta go fast? If 2 engines are good, 8 has gotta be better. And why stop at fusion thrusters, lets throw antimatter out the back and see what that does! Anyways, the game is flawed. Yes. And while the mods aren't perfect but they are absolutely playable, still being worked on as far as I'm aware, and the current experience is enjoyable. The installing of the mods isn't too hard or complicated. Well worth every penny, pretty sure the blackbox mod startup doesn't increase playtime on steam. Its been 460hrs for a long time I feel like, there's no way its that few hours. Probably have 460hrs staring at the ship customization screen alone dwelling on and adjusting just the right design or optimization to a new hull type.

StarDrive is the kind of game that sparks curiosity from the moment you boot it up. It tosses you into the vastness of space with a pile of tools, an open galaxy, and a sense of creative freedom that's immediately intoxicating. At its heart, this is a 4X strategy game that aims to blend galactic conquest with real-time tactics and an almost obsessive focus on ship design—and when it works, it really works. The highlight of the experience lies in the customization. Designing ships from scratch—down to the placement of modules, weapons, and engines—is a sandbox dream for anyone who grew up sketching star cruisers in the margins of notebooks. There's genuine joy in crafting a fleet that reflects your playstyle, whether you're building nimble raiders or hulking dreadnoughts with rows of railguns. And when those ships finally clash in a massive space battle, there's a raw sense of payoff that’s hard to beat. The AI, while far from perfect, does put up a respectable challenge depending on difficulty. Diplomacy is present and functional, though not especially deep. Colonizing planets, managing resources, expanding your influence—it all checks the expected 4X boxes with a few refreshing tweaks. The game also lets you lead different alien factions, each with distinct advantages and styles, which adds some replay value. However, the game is also a cautionary tale of ambition bumping into technical limitations. It launched with bugs, and despite patches, some of those issues never fully left. Crashes can still happen late in the game. Pathfinding during combat can be maddening, with your fleet occasionally drifting into danger or freezing mid-command. And while the UI isn't terrible, it's clearly a bit rough around the edges, especially in larger empires where micro-management becomes more of a chore than a strategy. It’s also worth noting that the game lacks a strong narrative or campaign structure—there’s no story mode, no guided objectives, just sandbox matches. For players who crave emergent storytelling or who like to invent their own galactic tales, that’s fine. But those looking for a structured experience might find it too loose. Despite these shortcomings, StarDrive shines in those moments where your custom fleet decimates an enemy armada, or when a last-minute tech breakthrough turns the tide of a war. It’s a game made with passion, and that shows. It just needed more polish and post-launch love to become something truly great. Pros: Deep ship design system that rewards experimentation Large galaxy maps with varied alien races Real-time combat adds dynamism to the 4X formula Visually charming, with colorful faction aesthetics Satisfying late-game tech and warfare Cons: – Bugs and stability issues persist, even years after launch – Weak UI and some frustrating automation – No structured campaign or narrative arcs – Diplomacy and empire management feel shallow over time – Fleet pathfinding can derail large-scale engagements Final Rating: 6.5/10 StarDrive is a flawed but fascinating space sim that nails creativity and customization, yet struggles with polish and depth in key areas. A cult favorite for tinkerers, but a rough ride for those expecting a refined strategy experience. It might be out but it feels like it was never completed.
Forget the haters. I played the snot out of this game when it first released and it was super fun. Haven't played it in a while and I'm not sure why it shows me only have played 4.9 hours either because I for sure played longer that that. I hear there are a bunch of mods for this too, so I'll likely explore those on my next return to the game this weekend. Would I pay full price ($30 at the time of this review) for an unsupported game that was released over a decade ago? No, I would not, and neither should you, but that doesn't discredit the fact that this is legit still a fun game. I recommend buying for around the $10 mark though!
Better than the second one.
game crashes all the time instead of fixing the game dev decided to release stardrive 2. guy prob works for rockstar now.
All this game does on windows is crashes... Wasted money
Bad.

The game is fun..its a great 4x game...have same feeling original Mater of Orion had, shipbuilding is the top of the icecream and unique Buuut....unfortunately the developer was a scammer...left the game with trillions of bugs....just to make Star Drive 2.....and did exakt same thing again with that one Sure it get a tiny bit better with mods....but even if its fun to play as long u do until some bug crashes it...i cant recomend it just because all bugs and unfinished things
