StarCrossed is conceptually "cooperative pong". Each player controls one paddle and a star will bounce between them. You dodge enemies, bullets, and use the star to destroy things. Eventually you can charge a special move to destroy even more. For a single player, this is stupidly frustrating. You are controlling 2 separate characters potentially on opposite sides of the screen and expected to dodge homing enemies and bullets. Each character has 3 health and if either dies you need to restart the level. But frustrations go deeper than just the single player confusion. Enemies will rush towards the sides and corners of the screen where you literally can't hit them. Enemies spawn in the middle of the screen where you're dodging. The concepts are fine, but the implementation has me swearing constantly as I just wait for the enemy to move to somewhere I can actually hit only to get blindsided by a new one. The worst part is that even when the game is being fair, its just not all that fun. Everything moves at a fairly slow pace and when the ball is moving away from you.... you're literally doing nothing but waiting. All 3 times I've opened this game to give it another college try I quickly find myself bored and frustrating again. If you have a second player locally, maybe you'll enjoy it more than me. But that single player tag is a real stretch.
Unfortunately I recommend StarCrossed. The steam tag of 'single player' is incorrect and the game frustrating to even attempt as a solo player. The combat is boring and sluggish, with deaths feeling all to often cheap. The music is the best part of the game and I thoroughly enjoyed listening to tracks throughout my play through. I wish the developers the very best for the future but StarCrossed should be crossed out of library.
Love the art style, and idea of the game, but as a solo player it was impossible for my brain to figure out how to control the two characters separately. Really disappointed because I was super excited to play it. 10/10 art and character design though, plus bonus points for great idea. 2/10 for playing alone
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ojSdS3zK-0 A combination of visual novel and arcadey bullet hell like game with a unique way to play. You're a band of five magical girls like heroes who are in space fighting evil. You play two at a time to control and the gameplay is controlling both to move with a star bouncing off each other which is how you destroy the enemies by having the star go through them. The closer your characters are, the faster it bounces off each other. There are some nice mechanics, such as each of them having their own ultimate ability, and different kinds of enemies like one with a front shield, so it can only be damaged from behind. Does start off nice and simple as you get use to the controls while there aren't too many enemies, but as you progress, does get intense as you get swarmed but enemies and bullets. Is fun to play by yourself controlling both characters, or you can even play with another person, each controlling one of them.
It's boring af :/ I didn't like it. StarCrossed 2/10 Heisen
I really wanted to like this game. It has a lovely art style and soundtrack, as well as a nice little story, but it has a number of flaws holding it back. The Good: +Art design is great. The alien magical girls concept is wonderful and unique. +The soundtrack is very nice and fits the game well. +The different character dialogues all seem pretty well done and thought out. The Inbetween: +- It's short. My time represents about a run and a half of the game. You're supposed to run it with different character combinations for new dialogues and abilities, so it has some replay value. I got this in a bundle, so I didn't mind the short playtime. The Bad: -A number of problems prevent the game's core concept, bouncing a star between the two characters to kill enemies, from truly working out. -The biggest is that enemies can spawn in corners, where you either have to let them sit and shoot at you, or take collision damage in order to kill them. Neither feels like a great option. -A major part of the game is that players can perform a move right before the star hits them to increase the star's speed and damage. If you're playing with someone over Parsec or Remote Play, lag will likely make this move nigh-impossible to pull off. Even without lag, the timing is a bit odd, as you need to perform the move a little before the star hits you, not just as the star hits you. -The characters' special abilities are wildly imbalanced. All specials make you invulnerable and buff the star in some way, but the Outlaw's "Big Star" and the Princess' "Royal Guard" are by far the best ones, as they help you hit way more enemies than the other versions. -The order of each Boss's "cycle" is random. This is especially noticeable on the final boss; if she performs some of her tougher moves too early, that attempt is basically over. Beating the final boss for my friend and I was less about learning how to counter her moves and more about having a run where she didn't do her worst attacks before we had the special abilities ready. I think the developers clearly have talent and I hope to try some of their other games. I cannot recommend this artistic but flawed game.
only buy this game if your going to play with others 7/10 as a single player game 4/10 single player is on the harder side of things they should really slap in an easy game mode needs healing at respawn checkpoints needs more heals or health when playing single players at least. could slap in an easy mode that gives people 5 or 6 health each so casuals could enjoy the game needs 4 player co-op needs 2 players controlling 2 people each Achievements are insane!!! most are huge grinds and almost nobody has any of them
I like coop games, so I was eager to try StarCrossed. On the bright side, Starcrossed is a relaxed game, with chill atmosphere and gameplay. Moreover, the story mode will let you fail as much as you want, without losing progress, so you can play with anybody including little ones or people not familiar with video games. On a technical note, Remote Play Together works well (though whoever is away will have to account for input lag), so you can play with a friend/family member even if they are away. Unfortunately, I can not recommend the game. The lack of enemy variety, and the repetitive levels make means that, once you've seen the first half of the game, you've pretty seen it all, and you're just waiting for the game to end. While it's nice that the game doesn't make you lose progress upon death, it also removes the challenge aspect, the need to actually focus and do better. Moreover, the special power makes any boss trivial, so you end up just sleeping through most of the game, waiting for it to end. To be fair to the game, there is an arcade mode where you can fail and so have to try to do your best, but my friend and I were too bored after story mode to try to play that other mode and beat yet another serie of the same simple enemies.
I love the colors scheme, music, and character art. It was easy to learn mechanics, yet challenging enough to drive you slightly insane. I didn't like the Peanuts-like noises for dialogue, but other than that it's a keeper. Fun for remote play together.
