Amazing game with tons of replayability, provided you are good enough to beat it! Definitely has a difficulty curve, but in a good way! You will die often, learn the tricks to beat enemies better, perfect or tweak your character, scrap them and start a new, completely different, build - and then love that one even better! Honestly, this game has been so fun and I can't wait for the full release! There's a lot of pop culture references in here that had me giggling, and the need to explore every room is funnnn. If you liked Legend of Grimlock-style dungeon crawling and want it in a cyberpunk world with a robust roguelike style, here's your game!
This game should get way more attention. Seriously, it's great. I did not think taking a turn-based party dungeon crawler and turning it into a first-person roguelike would work, but it really does. The large number of skilltrees reminds me of Dungeons of Dredmore and gives the game a lot of variety in character building. Each floor also adds a few new enemies which need to be faced in different ways and hunting for loot is quite rewarding. The presentation of the game aims to make it look like a sci-fi FPS, and when engaged in a huge gunfight against loads of enemies, you almost forget it's a turn-based tactical game. Honourable mention to the social media system in the game - during the game, you can pick up slates containing posts from Chimera's internal social media network, most of which contain satirical bickering between Chimera employees satirising office life as well as Cyberpunk megacorporation tropes. It's not just for flavour, though, since you can select to LIKE or DISLIKE said posts, which will give you rewards based on your interaction. Sounds stupid, which it also is, but it's very entertaining and provides funny and immersive background story to the game as well as giving the player more opportunities for loot. Game's supposed to release in a short while. Very much looking forward to see what version 1.0 and beyond will add.
An overall excellent sci-fi dungeon crawler. It's not StarCrawlers 2 by any means, but it's a great spin-off title. The abundance of active/passive abilities and upgrades to said abilities are great - making each build choice feel at least somewhat interesting. Enemy designs are of course mostly similar to what had come before in the original StarCrawlers, but for what enemies are new here they're equally as well designed and charming. The weakest point of the game from my playtime so far is no doubt the user interface. It takes a lot of messing around to get things working just the way you would like them to. Hotbar/hotkey functionality has been quite mediocre considering the amount of abilities and usable items you get. Luckily some patching from the developers has already went into resolving these issues. Having 3 active hotbars is more or less essential in my opinion as your ability and item slots will fill up before you know it. I also highly suggest playing with Ironman mode enabled so that your choices feel more impactful as you can't just reload from an old save (this should be enabled by default in my opinion). Accepting the potentially horrible consequences of your actions really makes StarCrawlers Chimera shine in typical rogue-like fashion. :} My personal rating: 8/10 If the developers continue to support SC Chimera in the long-run then I could easily see future paid DLC/expansion packs being worth picking up. If StarCrawlers 2 will ever be a thing, then please get the original composer back for the soundtrack!
Pretty positive first impression. Dynamic build system where you can freely combine a number of skill lines, leaving it up to the player to create a build that actually works, and figure out which skills actually work well together and are worthwhile. The game's more roguelike structure lends itself well to this kind of gameplay, as each run (no matter if the last one succeeded or ended prematurely) you can experiment with other build ideas. At least on hard, the game is also reasonably challenging. Got myself killed a few times already due to not acting careful enough. The biggest downsides I see are that some of the skills are clearly purely utilitarian while others serve as main skills that can carry you on their own. This is not clear at all from the initial skill selection, though - at least I was not able to see a preview/demo of the initially selected skills. This part definitely needs more information. In addition, some skills from the skill lines are just clearly not thought through, such as the pet slime, which is cute, but always lost somewhere on the map instead of helping you and basically gets 1-hit-killed on any floor past the third, becoming nigh useless. Or the overload hacking skill which even with smarts as one of the main attributes does so little damage that it cannot compete with even the weakest of attacks. I feel like several more balancing passes would have been needed.
This game is terrible. It would only be kind of bad if not for the enormous waste of a good concept. The person designing all the skills and possible tactics for this game was entirely lacking in imagination. There is almost no way to use synergy between skills. Nothing you choose matters. There is no depth.
I'm a high tier kickstarter backer of this game. It's quite fun. There's a lot of build variety to keep your runs fresh.
An uninspired dungeon crawler. prefer the 1st one who have better game mechanisms
I like this game it keeps surprising me. I see a lot of others mentioning it draws from roguelikes, and I think that's true. To be clear, rogue-likes not rogue-lites. Games like ATOM or Tales of Maj'eyal. It's a grid-based dungeoncrawler, with a very unique feeling Turn-based FPS combat akin to games like Superhot. Much like those games, you have a huge list of skill trees and builds to experiment with. And these trees have no "+5% damage" garbage. It's all interesting and gameplay changing. Equipment also often times comes preloaded with interesting and build defining abilities. Everything I've seen so far has been amazingly well designed. Permadeath exists but is off by default. Also like those games, opening doors is terrifying. Situations get ugly quickly and proper planning and response is critical. The developers are clearly aware of this quality and implemented a stealth mechanic giving you a couple of turns after opening a door to decide how you want to engage. There are tons of abilities, outs, and strategems you can employ. It's a really well designed game in that regard. Further like those games, it EATS time. The game centers around climbing a giant corporate tower and each floor can take an hour. I'm only like seven hours in, and on floor five... on floor one there was a locked elevator with the number 83 on it (and other lower elevators). I... can't even imagine what that could mean as far as my life this summer. So far, the floors have all been incredibly unique, with chemistry labs, production centers, cyber-spider infestations, training floors. Much of it has unique mechanics to the floor as well. Seems like there are some long term deep secrets to find too. The bad? Sometimes grid targeting is a little fiddly (or doesn't show up at all). And sometimes enemy AI breaks. In both cases, sometimes favorable and sometimes unfavorably. Performance has been great up until my current floor which chugs a bit (for good reason though! The developers went kind of all out on this floor and its kind of awesome!) I see lots of people complaining the story is non-existent. Yes and no; compared to their previous title, which was much more traditional rpg, yeah it's quite barebones. Especially regarding you and your motivation and role in all of this it doesn't really say much. Usually all you get is a mysterious figure offering you prizes for tasks. But I will say there are some really flamboyant enemies and NPCs you meet. Yeah I, like the others, was a little disappointed it's all not as well contextualized in some kind of overarching narrative though. I bought this because I was a big fan of their last title and wanted to support the devs. It's not the same thing of course, and I think that's fine. Chase your vision Juggernaught. I'm really glad this exists. Like it said; it keeps surprising me and I want to see what happens further up the tower.
they changed the combat system from instanced encounters into that obnoxious 'everything on the map acts at the same time' garbage that turns every single fight into either boring press-1 spam where you're never in any danger and so everything feels like a pointless waste of your time, OR a tedious circus performance where you kite everything around the map and open/close doors constantly and other stupid ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ like that to delay the hostiles while you abuse cooldown recovery and regeneration. probably the worst turn-based combat system ever devised by man, turning all these what might otherwise be enjoyable dungeon crawlers into unplayable garbage. no thanks.
Seems like the first game except now you do not have a party and you can combine all their classes into your main (well some of them at leasT) and instead of going to missions here and there on different enviroments you are in a huge building. There are side missions which you can find in chests (somehow) but in general it seems more of the same. Only played the first hour or so though. There still doesn't seem to be a decent storyline though mostly a strategy game really than anything else. Gameplay was decent and it's cheap so.. sure why not.
