So.... this review is written after the first hotfix, and I think I had a few less technical issues than others as a result, though the hand tracking was still off, and at one point the game refused to let me be taller than three feet high, with the character's legs stretching out awkwardly in front of me until I quit and restarted the game, plus screens on the walls glitching like broken televisions right from the beginning, which I assume was also a bug. So technical issues aside, the dialogue is quite badly written, from both a grammar perspective, and not feeling at all like Star Trek. This might be okay if the performances were good, but the line delivery was so universally poor that it left me wondering if the voices might all be AI generated. If they aren't AI, they may as well be. Felt more like a fan made mod for something else. I have put up with other technically worse games because they were telling interesting stories, but refunded this after half an hour or so, as the writing was too wretched to compensate for the technical failings. This did NOT feel like Star Trek at all to me.
The game is all jank. I love Star Trek and VR but the game is still broken two months after launch. Terrible grip controls, crashes whenever you go into the pause menu, and poor design (such as constantly grabbing your tricorder or phaser which sit at your sides, waist level. No option to adjust belt height). An honest attempt but it still needs more updates.
Absolute. Hot. Garbage. I was willing to take a chance on this just to walk around in a Star Trek spaceship environment... you can't even really do that. The engine runs like choppy crap on a high-end gaming PC, and more importantly, the environments are mostly "generic sci-fi walls" put together with a few star trek style monitors. *tons* of horrendous glitches. Your hands will get stuck in objects. The control scheme is a much of a broken joke as everything else in this game. An amateur attempt at best. I wouldn't even call this an indie game... I'd call it an unfinished alpha of a concept. Returning for a refund as soon as I hit enter on this review.
Still runs like dog water coming out of a sealed pipe. I'm running a 5090 here and my lag time is 40 to 60ms on ssw at 45fps. My hands and arms jitter like I'm seizing. Glad I got 90fps gpu rendered on the menu bridge, but I literally loaded my save onto the same bridge in game and its unplayable. ON A 5090! I used to run a slightly more common rig with a 3080ti so I know how lucky I am and how rare it is to have this 5090/9950 x3D with 64gb DDR5 setup. If I can't run this on absolute top tier best of the best hardware then the optimization is a crime. I'm really sorry to say, and I know you're here because you LOVE Star Trek and you LOVE VR, but you can't run it. I'm sorry to anyone even lucky enough to be running high end 30 or 40 series hardware 70s 80s ti or not. Don't waste the effort. I'm going to sleep on this and consider whether or not to request a refund. God help me I want quality Star Trek content, and I appreciate the Devs for what work they've done to *try* to bring it to us. From my 90min of play time I think there is something here to salvage! That said, if lack of optimization was a crime they'd have to work on it from a jail cell, because this is just criminal. I'm considering following Quest 3 optimization simply because its basically a console so optimization for one device must be more manageable for what is essentially a VR console experience. I was so excited for this, but its another Star Trek video game disappointment. At least they have company.
Thanks Lionel! I played this with Quest3. Star Trek is nostalgic to me. I expected a unique atmosphere of space opera-like story adventure when I heard it was coming out in VR, but mystery horror games are a bit baffling. Anyway, the original TV series also had episodes of various genres, so it is not so strayed. Still, the progress of becoming a Vulcan Engineer and fighting infection and solving problems with various tools is not obvious and is interesting with a tense story for me. For today's games, graphics are too simple, which lowers the sense of immersion, but if I think differently, it can be seen as reviving the atmosphere of the original TV series that began from the 1960s. There are proper lines of dialogues with which the situation and what to do understood. Sometimes there are some physics bugs such as not moving as if your hands were stuck in the wall, but overall, I don't have a big problem in enjoying an interesting puzzle adventure.
I completely disagree with one of the reviews I read in which he states the writing and performances are terrible despite only playing it for 30 mins. This is well voice acted and the players character comes across perfectly as Vulcan. Anyway I really like the game and love exploring the ship and it does feel authentically Star Trek. As you can see my run time is overly long for a game I'm still playing, this unfortunately is due to it being riddled with bugs and this ruins the fun somewhat. I have fallen through floors into nothingness because the room didn't generate. I have followed a character only to see after I died the portal was closed therefore had to go back to the same room I had first met him to start over. I've been stuck in a holo deck simulation room when speaking to the ships doctor as my character asked the ships computer to repeatedly generate the exit door. I could go on.....there are dozens of bugs which should have been removed by simple play testing and I fear will ruin the games launch. Personally I really like the story and atmosphere and to some degree the environmental graphics. I do wish they were higher resolution or higher poly characters as the people look a little stand alone Quest generated. Could you please 🙏 for the love of God add a height adjustment like most VR games have. I'm 5'10 and this game has me clearly lower as my lower body has constantly bent knees with the legs out in front of me at unnatural angle. Your lowerbody should sit beneath my torso not out in front. If I stand on my tip toes the character stands up properly. I recall another height adjustment error where I put my controls on the floor briefly and when I came back I was stuck permanently crouched as I tried to walk. All in all a great game is here, it desperately needs patches or I suspect many will give up. I'm 78% complete and despite numerous replays of scenes due to the bugs i will persist to the end as I do like what the creators have here. Update: I finished the game today and as expected had several more odd bugs: If I tried to pick up a collectable tablet I just couldn't, my arms would stretch like 'stretch Armstrong' but it wouldn't budge. I was taking items out of a storage box without opening the lid first. Odd one at 98% complete there was a ladder to exit the ship, i couldn't grab the rungs any higher than about half way. The hatch opens but could not grab higher than half way. At the bottom you can grab the sides and teleport to the top. This i only discovered after multiple attempts to exit the ship. Final thoughts: In my opinion this has the potential to be another Sci Fi VR classic like Alien: Rogue Incursion. I love Star Trek and this indeed was Star Trek from the atmosphere/writting to the voice acting and ships interior. I thought the characters were typical of this universe and really liked the cool devices created for the player to interact with this world. I have no complaints with what they have created and would love to see another Star Trek (Borg please) game from these developers who clearly understand Star Trek. For me first and foremost get rid of all the bugs I would happily play this through again and write everything down if this helped the games creators iron out everything I encountered. My final request would be increase the poly count on the ships doctor and the other characters. Incidentally there was a mind meld scene with Berksa a Romulan and she looked great up close. Whilst I'm on detail, my characters arms lack detail and a little more time on the in game main character wouldn't hurt. Please buy this game if your a fan of Star Trek or Vr and support the developers as they have something special here.
Love it so far! Nice Story, nice graphics (using quest 2 on steamvr), nice overall experience! Some people complained about the horror element - which I don't mind! Loved especially the dialogues with the cardassian guy. He gives me the creeps. I haven't finished it yet, but (I'd say) 90% of the game take place on the USS Lumen and for the most part in it's damaged/infected state. Would have loved to see the ship in it's regular state with the crew acting normal. I guess this would have been more of a telltale game than. It would have been nice to see other ships/locations (maybe the cardassian guy's freighter?) too. (I haven't finished it yet, so this might be a wrong assumption on my side). So overall I like it alot! Despite that I have a few negatives: - the controls can be difficult some times (like I can't make him fold his hands to meditate) - the infection idea is nice, but it gets out of proportion for my taste (using it to jump and so on) - the infection assets in the game make it look (at times) quite cheap - especially that flying snake thing -> it felt at times as if I was playing one of these first VR games ever created. + engaging story + nice character(s) and dialogues + nice starfleet interiors + interaction with the tricorder/isolinear chips and so on would love to see another VR game set on DS9/Voyager or Enterprise (Archer)
Had some issues, the game wouldn't launch. Verified the files and it found 4 that were bad. Got that resolved. So an hour in, and so far it's VERY GOOD. If you are a trek fan, this one is worth it. More please!
Really enjoying the game so far. The character feels very Vulcan, as they should, and it's fun exploring and scanning everything with the tricorder. I kind of wish there was a way to explore the ship in its non infected state, as I'm admittedly not much of a horror player normally, but I'm enjoying this one and it's cool to see different kinds of stories being told within the Star Trek setting
OVRPlugin.dll.bak
