Prices
Each in the currency that store quoted — not converted: the gap between two rows is the publisher's pricing, not an exchange rate.
Availability
We put this game to every storefront we collect. A market that answered not sold has told us something about the game; a market we never asked has not, and the two are never drawn the same.
Discounts
Every price cut of more than 20% we have observed, in each market that quoted one, with this game's chart position on either side of it. These are episodes, not a model: a sale is one event, and one event cannot tell you what the next one will do.

Reviews
I think most of the positive reviews of this game are from players of the original and are nostalgia driven. As a brand new player what I've found is that the writing is terrible, voice acting is cringe, and the combat is truly awful. I bounce between Galaxy & Universe difficulty (medium & hard), and it's just so inconsistent and will spike randomly. It will go from faceroll easy on Galaxy to impossibly difficult on Universe. Neither option is enjoyable. I also thought from the demo it'd have more of an action combat focus, but as the game progresses I realize it's less about timing/finesse/skill, and more about how you manage the AI companions & skill points, and then spamming a single skill in combat hoping that you win the fight. I really enjoy the set pieces & graphics / art style, and I'm trying to power through, I'm just having a really rough time with the combat & difficulty spikes. It just doesn't feel fair or rewarding.

14 of 15 markets; the rest we haven't asked for this title, not markets where it is unavailable.
14 on sale1 answered “not sold”0 we did not ask
The 1 “not sold” market is read from the Steam price pass of Sep 1: that day the store answered for this game elsewhere and gave no price there. The 14 priced markets are the same rows as the table above — each the latest price we hold, dated here when it is older than that pass. The 0 marked “not asked” were not put to this store at all — either it has no storefront there or we do not collect it yet, and neither is a statement about the game. A refusal is a refusal on one day; a store can list a title again tomorrow.
Reviews, worldwide (the counter carries no country): 0.78/day in the week to Aug 4 → 1.14/day in the week after.
For scale, across Steam · Top Sellers · Brazil over the last 30 days: the 26 chart moves that followed a price cut of more than 20% went a median of 7 places towards #1, and the 2,402 moves with no price cut behind them went 2 away. One store, one chart, one country — it is the only place we have enough observations to say even that.
Prices outside the United States have been collected since 6 August 2026 and chart positions since 19 July 2026, so a cut older than that has no market to compare and a market that joined later has no history yet. Nothing here is converted between currencies.

Overall I enjoyed this game. The art style is beautiful, the music is brilliant, the voice acting is good and the story is interesting. My only criticism of it is that I think the combat looks more fun that it actually is. Most fights are so easy they are over instantly after pressing one button and then every once in a while there is a big difficulty spike and you will have to think. I think I would've preferred something in between that.
Star Ocean 2 is one of my childhood games, and I love how much attention to detail they put into this remake. My father bought the original for me when I was a child—not because he knew what it was about, but because he liked the cover and the title. I've always cherished this game as a special gift from him. Now Square Enix, this is how you remake games. Do something like this for Chrono Cross, and you'll definitely get my money.
Addicting. My best friend had the ps version when we were kids. He let me borrow it for a week and I didn't get very far. Definitely better than I remember it lol. Story is great but as an adult it feels a bit pieced together than flowing together, 7/10. Character development and interactions are 10/10 though. Combat, itemization, and crafting is great 9/10. Took my time and I did first playthrough on Universe. Did a 2nd and 3rd on Earth just to speed through and see more of the endings. Might try a Chaos run if I get bored with other games. Game is worth every penny I spent. Oh, even before I 100% this game I did all of the challenges lol. I was pretty addicted...
In an Ocean of Remakes, this remaster is possibly the best. I love everything they did to put polish and life onto this classic. It's interesting to read the reviews of players criticizing the combat, and they're probably right about it. Old Tales/Star Ocean titles were a mixed bag with the combat system. Spellcasting in SO2 takes a pretty big backseat to physical skills, especially with the animation interruptions. If you grew up with this game, you already know what you're in for. If you've never played Second Story or Second Departure, be prepared for surprise difficulty spikes (save your game often).
If I had to quickly sum it up in a short review: The game seems to have its very hardcore fans. I'm happy for them because the quality of this remake seems very good coming from someone who never played the original. That being said, the game is very forgettable. The two main characters are very likable, but the plot just keeps sending you on fetch quests, and has a very run of the mill save the world plot. Combat is not terrible but not great either, however it is fun in the tougher fights. There is an entire crafting and level up system that is way too overdesigned to offer nothing engaging in the end.
Face tanking every attack is way better than trying to parry. And even when set to "attack them with everything" your companions will just run away from enemies and do nothing once they run out of mana. So every fight is just me mashing the attack button and killing every enemy on my own.
