4/10 TL;DR Tedious, Linear puzzles. Obtuse even for mobile. No achievements. Lowered score because more bugs found. Especially for a puzzle game, players expect Steam achievements to reward themselves for pushing through all the levels. None here, though the game has its own broken 3-star rating for each level. "Over 100 levels!?" Nope you should not expect integrity from this developer. Even for a tablet the game is layed out poorly: the Move counter layout and zoom of camera blocks the ability to spacially judge a solution to the puzzle. Since you cannot see where you are going, the method is fail and then remember which configuration is needed--Very linear solutions. Long delays on reseting a level which should already be in memory: 8 seconds. After failing to complete a level perfectly, there is no quick way to repeat the same level for perfection. Instead, to repeat, on must jump to the main menu and force a backward walk on the idiotic "roped level numbers": 15 seconds. The game is visually pleasing to the point of actually ignoring the players' rough gaming experience. LEVEL 64 is broken. I finished it in just the right # of moves for perfection and gathered the 3 gems, however, the game is not registering the gem "star award" for that level. Apparently, the developers themselves found the game so tedious as well, that they never really played them all through. LEVEL 65 is broken. I can get the 3rd star for perfect number of moves only if I skip the 2nd extra star for gem collection. The level is so forced and linear that I am sure that I could write a mathematical proof that my analysis is correct, and QED the developer never played this level either. This really is not that complicated of a game to spend a couple hours proof-playing your own levels. LEVEL 74 is broken, because we know you guys cannot count already. LEVEL 81 has no gems at all, so the player cannot get the gem star for that level. You cannot have 100 levels with 3 stars and level 81 with 2 stars. Why do I need to tell you this? A weak, puzzle game--I suppose it is worth US$1 to throw these guys a bone for their efforts to entertain, if they fix the bugs and add 2 Steam acheivements "all 100 completed" and "all perfect completed." I am not asking for an in-depth story and cutscene--just make your puzzles right. 4/10 Roll-the-block puzzles+with untested, broken levels 5/10 GUI obstruction + Blind perspective for a puzzle (hint: zoom out a bit from your amazingly vibrant graphics, guys. Or provide a zoom out to 50 + zoom in to 100 to prevent eye strain)
square's route is a colorful cube-rolling puzzler, sadly without undo, which is an instant dealbreaker, especially in an isometric game where it's easy to accidentally press the wrong direction. there's not even a reset hotkey, gotta do it from the pause menu with more then a single click or keypress. 100 levels unlocked one by one. the goal is to squish all the evil plants, no exit to reach until the last stage. stars are awarded for finishing, doing so within the fewest possible moves, and collecting all the gems. there are next level and world map buttons on the level complete screen but no retry button, so if you want to go for a better solution, map first. there is a retry button upon failure but it doesn't simply restart the level, just brings up the preview with a play button. no level numbers outside that screen and the world map either. most levels don't fit the screen and planning ahead is troublesome without zoom, would be so even with undo. no timer but there's a hard move limit, can't go over. there are also many real-time/timing elements. platforms and elevators only waste the player's time by constantly moving, but hedgehogs unleash spikes every few seconds, gotta time your moves right lest you lose one when they hit. at least it doesn't automatically fail the level. sloths are even worse. uncharacteristically, they move around and take away a step not only when they run into you (and every couple seconds if you keep holding them up) but even if they pass by you. other mechanics include slides, teleporters (all the same color), arrows pushing you in set directions, and different plants requiring different colors to deal with. your blue side can't kill a red plant but no harm done to either party for trying. fireflies are neat, clear everything (gems and hedgehogs too) in two directions. it can be completely played with the keyboard, no need for the mouse, but it works for menu navigation, except scrolling the world map in only possible with the left/right keys. no wheel, hold, swipe, whatever, nothing. clicking any on-screen level brings up the preview/play screen, so it's not ideal. another weird oversight is the lack of a main menu. there's level select, settings, and you can see the title screen while the game loads. cute graphics, love the blocky animals, very repetitive music. couldn't find a mobile version, certainly looks like there could be one, but it's done reasonably well either way. separate volumes, resolutions, windowed mode, anti-aliasing, v-sync, shadows, and while controls aren't rebindable, there are alternatives for movement (both arrows and wasd work, can be held to move more), enter and esc do what they have to, controller works too. unfortunately, only sfx and music toggles are available while playing. progress is stored in the registry (under warhungrygames, not the dev mentioned on the store page). the game's been long forgotten by the developer (and me after buying it years ago), so no hope for fixes or improvements. shame, but even if they added undo, I highly doubt real-time enemies would've been changed, so it's very far from recommendable. I gave up around the halfway point.
Square's Route is a cookie-cutter puzzle game without anything fun or innovative. The fact that they didn't add any steamworks features, to take advantage of the platform being sold on, makes it feel like Square's Route wasn't even worth their own time. I don't recommend this game.
This is a decent puzzle game that tasks the player with guiding a cube around 2D grid-based levels representing a garden, with the aim being to remove coloured 'weeds' by squashing them with matching colour-codes faces of the cube. For a simple mechanic, Square's Route can get impressively challenging towards the end of its 100 levels, and compelling to try to achieve the 'perfect' minimum-moves completions (though I'm convinced that at least a couple of these are impossible). Although the game does gradually introduce a few new mechanics, such as moving platforms, teleporters and a few types of enemies, it could still benefit from some more variety in these, and many of the enemies move in real time rather than in the turn-based manner of the rest of the game, making them more of an annoyance than a puzzle challenge. The game would also very much benefit from colour-blind assistance options for its later levels, where a couple of the colours used can appeal very similar, and some way to visualise the colours of the hidden faces of the cube (only three can be seen directly at any given time) would be beneficial.
What I love about this puzzle game is that you get to use movement to figure them out. Rather than staring blankly at the screen wondering how to solve a puzzle, you have to move around and think as you go. I found that I often solved a puzzle after a few tries and wasn't even sure how I did it! It takes a few hours to beat them all, but will probably take another while to get a 3/3 score on every level. The other thing I noticed is that the puzzles don't just get harder as you go along. You'll go back and forth between easier and trickier puzzles, which helps to encourage you to keep solving them. Aside from the actual gameplay, the visuals are beautiful. They really remind me of MySims, if anyone remembers that game... The only thing I would ask for is a more expanded soundtrack, since some of the songs weren't much fun to listen to over and over. However, I found that turning the music off and just hearing the sound effects and the ambient noise was just fine. I totally recommend this game for people who are addicted to puzzle games, especially if you see it on sale or in a bundle.
I love these types of games that test your brain.. You're a moving box, and must collect these yellow objects while all trying to beat the level in limited movement Pros Challenging puzzles Soundtrack is nice Art/visual is lovely Cons No level select cant zoom in our out of the map
Square's Route is a game that I recommend because: - is a method to banish boredom - it has a good price - it is indie - it is a good puzzle game - it has strategy - it is colorful - it has a good soundtrack - it is funny - it has a good design Enjoy!
Disclaimer: I was asked to do a review if given a free copy of the game. I was not required to write a positive review and I told them not to expect one. Fortunately, it is positive. ----- So I played 40 minutes of this (only need less than an hour to get the concept and the mechanics that comes up as you progress for this game) and cleared 30 levels (some took a few retries to complete or go for 3 stars 'cause OCD). It's a cute puzzle game with cute square cows, hedgehogs, rabbits, fish, etc. and a cute way to squish weeds that look like Venus Fly Traps. Fun for kids and puzzle lovers alike. Some of the levels may be a breeze, however some require thought and planning to get that 3 star. There's not much else to say to be honest. There was one level, 16, where the perfect move counter needs to be higher. I cleared it in 17 moves left (which should be the maximum unless you can clear it with 18 moves left), yet the perfect counter is set to 5. I did point that out to the dev and hopefully they'll adjust that. ----- Check out more games I see that deserve more attention from my curator group: BluePaw's Underrated Games List Join and/or follow if you wish.
