A fast-paced party platformer taking simple gameplay and creating nail-biting challenges from it.

Spitlings tasks you and up to three friends with beating a series of short bullet hell levels, each taking up a single screen and containing a number of bouncing balls which will kill you in a single touch. Completing a level requires you to destroy all of these balls, which you can do by hitting them with your spit, i.e. a physics-controlled projectile. Balls come in different sizes, with larger ones splitting into multiple smaller balls upon being destroyed, requiring strategic thinking in order to prevent a flood of balls from overwhelming you. Dying resets the current level you’re in, which happens basically instantly and is rarely too frustrating, given the short length of levels. Multiplayer tends to make things a bit more difficult, as a single player dying will reset the level, making coordination and teamwork essential in order to succeed. You can spit either above or below your character, with the latter option giving the additional benefit of propelling your character upwards, thus improving your limited move set, which otherwise only allows moving left or right. You may only spit 10 times, before having to refill your spit, either by picking up previously fired projectiles from the ground or by slowly recharging, leaving you standing still helplessly. Your current ammo amount is displayed by the teeth (or similar features) of your character, which will start to disappear as your remaining spit depletes, making for a rather elegant indicator. You’ll probably want to start out playing through Spitlings’ story mode, which has you complete a linear list of levels introducing various gameplay elements while gradually ramping up the difficulty. Levels are split into packs of three, with you having to complete all three back-to-back in order to advance to the next pack. Three of these packs make up one of 12 worlds, each of which introduces unique gameplay components, which very much keeps things fresh and creates a nice difficulty curve. This gameplay is framed by a simple story told through short comics you unlock after completing certain worlds, providing some nice diversion. Each story level features a target time, which you’re challenged to beat in order to unlock harder variants of the levels you’ve already completed. While the story’s later levels are already quite challenging, these so-called B-side stages quickly become nail-bitingly hard and will certainly put friendships to the test in multiplayer mode. Beating regular or B-side level packs rewards you with one of 100 skins for your character, with additional ones being unlocked by earning achievements and through playing party mode. These skins not only feature rather varied and creative looks, but also come with different sound effects, which I very much enjoyed. You’ll also earn different colour themes to toggle between at any time, changing any level's colours as you desire. The aforementioned party mode tasks you with beating a number of levels back-to-back. While you still play together, your performance is compared against each other, giving incentive for more competitive behaviour. While there are a couple of levels unique to this mode, most of them are taken from the story mode, being unlocked once you’ve beaten them there. That said, things are kept fresh by a number of modifiers you can apply to change up the way your Spitlings move or interact with various objects, creating a lot of replay value. Graphically, Spitlings features a crisp, clean art style perfectly fit for the gameplay. Most everything is animated in some way, leading to levels, characters and even the UI feeling alive. Shaders are also used to great effect, with bouncing balls deforming based on their movement, level geometry bending a bit around your characters to create an ever-present outline and similar eye-candy focussed details. One such detail I very much enjoyed is that each death causes a coloured outline of your character along with a faint image of the remaining bouncing balls’ positions to be added to the levels background. Besides looking neat and showing off how often you’ve already failed this surprisingly also gives some neat insight into the ways you keep failing, giving pointers as to how to switch up your strategy. Similarly, the game’s soundtrack is honestly fantastic, with a great variety of catchy tracks that don’t become annoying even when you’ve been stuck in a level for half an hour. Sound design is equally well-done, with every action being accompanied by distinctive and often silly audio cues that very much fit the game. All of this creates a playful yet cohesive look and feel which I greatly enjoyed.

I had a great time with Spitlings and can only recommend it, especially if you’ve got friends to play the game with. You get a great blend of fun and challenge presented in a superb way. Note: The game's menu also contains a greyed-out level editor button, which is marked as coming soon. Seeing as the game seemingly didn't do too well sales-wise, this feature seems to have been completely abandoned. While this doesn't impact my enjoyment of the game, I do consider the editor's absence a pity, given its potential for creating additional content.
《Spitlings》——
It's fun for a while, then I need a break. Nice game to have in your library.
good game but my achivments for this game are locked for some reason!
This game isn't bad, but it feels like the planets to align in order for me to say "You'll enjoy this I recommend it". The quick and dirty requirements for me to recommend thumbs up: - Have at least 1-2 coop friends either online or local. - Buy on a deep discount - Plan for a relatively short playtime (We beat the based game in just over 2 hours) or play occasionally - Be ready for both painfully easy and genuinely difficult stages For a more detailed explanation... think of the games like Rainbow Islands or Bubble Bobble. Each map has the players spawn it and you need to defeat all the enemies. This is accomplished by spitting upwards or spitting downwards (Which doubles as a jump). You have a limited supply of spit that can be recovered by catching it, slurping it off the ground, or a highly delayed reload function. It starts off simple but new maps add gimmicks such as switches, spikes, ice blocks, etc. They're fine, they change things up, but never really evolve the game outside what you see early on. The balance ends up feeling a bit off as some levels feel super easy and some extremely challenging... and it almost feels arbitrary. It all makes its way to a out of left field finale that was quite difficult because it doesn't quite work like the rest of the game. There's plenty of skins to unlock and bonus versions of stages, but this relies heavily on you wanted to play the game more... and I can't say it seems likely for our group. It's probably worth mentioning two high points: The music is pretty good and the online functionality was solid. It didn't always match up 1 to 1 on screens, but it was close enough that we could play accurately. While it's a fine game, it just never hits the highs of it's inspirations. I don't regret my purchase, but I suspect it's because I happened to play during the blue moon where every advantage was in place. I had a coop partner, I paid next little, we both enjoy challenging games, and we intended a single session.
Still too many bugs, especially when playing with friends
Overall this is not a good game to play with mates... atleast not with mine as we got agitated real quick. It was decent enough as a single player game IF bought cheaply. See my review here https://youtu.be/6CAj-JkSJlc
Extremely fun and frustrating local multiplayer party game with some innovative ideas like growing back teeth and shooting into the air. Can be confusing at first but it is hilarious laugh once you get the hang of it.
