It's rough. A ways off from the level it could be but, it's still a really cool game imo, and has a feature set I've been really dying to see in a game. But it crashes a fair bit and has bugs. The GOOD: Really cool feature sets that basically let you run your own GWOT. similar to a mount and blade over world, you have an aircraft carrier that you can navigate around, and find target you want to hit. Theres also a fairly simple simulated economy of the fake country your operating in, and more stability to the economy means they can afford more security, which also helps you win the war. It's like the old breach and clear games but with A LOT more inspiration from the more modern Door Kickers series, with the troop movement and stuff. I'm really impressed with how many different things Applesauce incorporated here. Then there's all the different management stuff, training your guys, hiring on new people (permadeath for them too), purchasing equipment for them, upgrading the boat, upgrading your helicopter, researching gear, finding targets, and maybe more. None of it is very in depth, but there just so much that it really does help get you wrapped up in the campaign and adds an XCOM style of depth. The BAD: Animations are pretty janky, the graphics are quite low quality (not that graphics matter THAT much) but worst of all, is the controls, which are fairly buggy. Sometimes your character wont move and you need to unselect then reselect them to issue a command they'll respond to. And the path markers get SUPER cluttered, making it really hard to make precise runs effeciently. The game world also doesn't seem all the large, only a few points of interest on it. And then there's the crashing which f'd me over a few times, losing a fair bit of campaign progress. Always seems to happen on the campaign map. The MEAT AND POTATOES: If you like Door Kickers, and like me, have always wished it had a deeper campaign mode, this can give you a pretty good taste of it.. but its not nearly as polished as DK. It does feel like an early access title, with very basic menus and UI, and an experience that feels like a first version, waiting for more content or DLC, but sadly, I highly doubt anything is coming (seems ultra dead, which is a shame). But, still well worth the 10$ price tag imo, and I think its a hidden gem in the milsim/tactics game genre, that if nothing else has some really unique campaign mechanics I'd love to see adopted in other games in the future. And as a game made by one person (I think), it's a pretty awesome project.
Before playing any game the first thing I do is go into the settings and pick the graphical settings I prefer. This game does not allow me to change resolution, it defaults to the lowest resolution possible. If I scroll the resolutions and use apply or confirm all that happens is the game screen flashes and then when I check the settings im back on some old gameboy like resolution. I get that graphically the game is not amazing looking and I am fine with that, but why it wont allow me to increase my screen resolution is beyond me. It has the options in game, it just simply will not lock any of them in when I apply them. I wont refund the game as from the screenshots/reviews it sounds like a single Developer has built something cool and I want to support that, but not being able to change the screen resolution kills it for me before I even get started :(
In concept, this game is everything I want in a tactical military shooter. In execution, this game is absolutely unplayable. I've requested a refund and will revisit when its in an improved state. I commend the work effort of a single developer, but this should not have been released at this stage.
Great game, honestly lots of fun and potential to really be polished into something memorable. Would recommend, however be warned the game crashes frequently later in the game.
One man dev who clearly cares about what hes making, buy this game. I stan this man
Before playing this game what I expected from this game was an intense CQB game similar to door kicker, ready or not, but the slow fire rate of the weapons resulted in a long TTK which made the CQB aspect rather uninteresting. I took the entry from the door of the room as an example. Why did the two sides exchange fire for several seconds? Shouldn't we settle the fight in 1 second? So why should I draw a battle plan? Wouldn't it be faster to just let my troops walk in all together and shove the barrels into the enemy's mouth?
It's a bit like Door Kickers, with what seems like more management detail which is great. The graphics and sound are worse but that's fine. Unfortunately when you're in an actual battle the controls are a lot more clunky and less intuitive, and the camera angles are terrible - IMO using an isometric instead of top down view hurts this game a lot, and you can't see the insides of buildings even when your troops are inside a building. I'm not talking about detail but about general layout. I wouldn't list this game as unplayable like some of the other reviews but the battles certainly feel unpleasant. I don't consider the package to be worthwhile.
Underrated game IMO. The meta part is great, helping to rebuild a region overrun by insurgents. In a way it feels like building up my own town. It has a dynamic economy system that's directly hindered by pirate ships and insurgent patrols until you take them out. Then more cargo ships and trucks will safely arrive at their destinations and earn more money for the city (which also serves as your money for buying things). The micro game is well done too. Squad members can crouch or go prone like an FPS. You can safely open doors by having one guy go prone and aiming straight in, with two others crouched on the sides to cover the left & right pie pieces. The tutorial will show you how to pre-plan the orders of several squad members and then execute the plan all at once, but I've found most things perfectly do-able without using that feature. Capturing villages from insurgents can be tricky at first, but isn't bad once you learn a couple tricks. First, get to the capture area and hold Shift so your squad constantly faces your mouse cursor, then move the cursor in slow circles to monitor all directions and take out any enemies that get close. Second, watch for enemy artillery smoke and immediately vacate the area once you see it (use double-right-click to run, don't walk). After the artillery is over, make your way back in and continue capturing. And third, any friendlies in the area won't help capture, it's up to you to bring your squad there. After every battle, you'll probably have a couple guys that need to spend some time in the infirmary healing up, and a few other guys who have some training points they can burn at the shooting range. In both cases you just watch & wait, no minigame to play, but you can speed up time. The new weapons and armor you can research might be a little underwhelming compared to what you'd normally see in an RPG. But you do get some boosts from them, so they're still worth it, just don't expect too much. Training up individual stats seems to have a more noticeable effect. It's apparently no longer being worked on, but is in pretty good shape as-is and a good bargain for the price.
Certianly has great potential but it should be set as a early access, although the core elements are there it still needs polish, that being said if it carries on been worked on it will defiantly compete maybe surpass door kickers. with that added M&B world map element it this could go above and beyond
i really hope this gets some updates soon its a personal fav
