[th] Review by Gaming Masterpieces - The greatest games of all time on Steam. [/th]
Is it a masterpiece? No, certainly not, and it doesn't pretend to be one. The description says it is a 2h point and click adventure, and this is what it is. It took me a few minutes longer, but I am not the brightest guy. The story is about an old guy looking for a book. Escape with the book, and the game is over. To get the book, you have to solve a few puzzles on the way, not overly difficult. Actually, the game was fun and I am a bit sad I finished it so soon. Gamepad support works fine - select hotspot and press RT. Sometimes you need an item from your small inventory selected first. Conclusion: Very short and quite easy, but somehow funny point and click adventure.
No characters and a very basic story makes this a pretty dull point and click adventure.
The town of Red Pines has been evacuated due to a sizable earthquake. Legend has it that the center piece of the museum, The Spirits’ Book, was expertly replicated, and the museum staff took the copy and left the original behind when fleeing. Dan sets off to Red Pines to see if the legend is true, and to retrieve the original Spirits’ Book. Like No Other: The Legend of the Twin Books is a short point and click adventure that lasts around 2-3 hours.
https://youtu.be/y-EZyK6ZXps
🤔Overall Impressions🤔

Like No Other: The Legend of the Twin Books is short, uninteresting, and has no story or characters. It felt like a prologue rather than a game, and there just wasn’t much here to keep me engaged. The puzzles are on the easy side and there aren’t that many locations to visit. The aesthetics reminded me of old school adventures, which was nice, and voice acting and cut scenes were well done, but very scarce.

This game was bizarre, and not in a good way. It is understandable that there are no characters in the town of Red Pines, due to the evacuation, but it seems like a convenient way not to have to think about character design, character development, and plot, and without any other characters, the game is dull.
📕Story📕
There isn’t even much of a story. Some random person, for whatever reason, goes to a town which has been strangely evacuated, to try and obtain a book. We never get any indication what this book does. Does he want the book for profit; Does he want it because it holds mystical powers? Who knows!? It is never explained. We just know he wants it. Why a whole town is evacuated because of an earthquake is never elaborated on either, but you just go with it. That is where the mystery and story ends. There is no development at all; No character development because there are none, and no story development. He goes for the book, gets the book, the end. The game is purely a vehicle for the puzzles. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2858739361
🧩Puzzles🧩
So, what are the puzzles like? Are they enough to rescue the game? I’m afraid the answer is no, not for an adult anyway. They are far too easy in the main, uninspired, and uninteresting. For a start, there is no inventory combinations. Now, inventory combinations are not everyone’s cup of tea, especially when they are illogical or not obvious, but it is another example of how basic this game is, and how stripped down it feels. The inventory is also a little annoying to use. Items are never automatically selected, if needed. For example, a lock to a door doesn’t automatically open if you own the correct key. You have to access your inventory, and choose the correct item. This got very tiresome when an item had to be repetitively used, like the golf club to work the elevator. Please, just permanently place the thing in the shaft, rather than having to get it out each time you need to ride the elevator, which was a lot! Your inventory also contains items that you used to own, but no longer carry. They show a picture of said item but have a zero next to them! This just clutters the inventory with unnecessary items, but to be fair it doesn’t really cause an issue, but it just another weird choice. There were some puzzles which offered a mild challenge, but they were mostly quite straightforward, especially if you are au fait with the genre. They were all puzzles I had seen before, and again, no puzzle relied on conversations, or travelling to different places and returning. Each puzzle felt quite localized, as the game play area is reasonably small. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2858739404 The game is broken up into two halves, with the second half being much more enjoyable than the first. The first area was plagued with the elevator rides up and down, and up and down, each time opening your inventory to select the club. There were hardly any locations to visit. The ones that did exist were very similar looking and there were so many red herrings. Nearly every item Dan examined was of no interest to him. Occasionally, a description of something interesting, like a statue, was available, but the response was never clever or witty and items he did collect you couldn’t examine further in your inventory. I think there were about ten items in total in the whole game.
🌍 Exploration 🌍
The game has a strange way of controlling the character. Dan can move freely using the controller in a third person view, like in an action game, yet he still has to rely on the mouse cursor to highlight objects. This really threw me to start off with as I was running up to objects expecting them to light up so that I could interact with them, but nothing was highlighting. I then realized that the cursor was on the other side of the screen and I had to move it over the object. It’s quite rare to have such freedom of movement in a point and click game, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but the pointer always lags behind you. Just add it to the quirky list of features, I guess. There are twenty canisters to find, to get an achievement. They aren’t necessary to progress, but they’re a bit of fun to find and some are cleverly hidden. There’s no chapter select or scene choosing afterwards so you will need to play the game again if you miss any achievements.
📺 Graphics and Sound 🎵
The graphics are quite nice and have a retro feel about them. He looks a bit odd when he walks around, but it adds to the charm. Whenever a rare cut scene initiates it is always well drawn and voice acting is done well. There is an ambient hum in the background and Dan makes exaggerated foot step noises as he moves. All the sound effects are realistic and done to a high standard.
🍳Conclusion🍳

Like No Other: The Legend of the Twin Books falls short of the average point and click game on offer. It is very basic in so many areas and I don’t think it will appeal to those who enjoy story and character development in their adventures. For people looking for a simpler approach to point and click games it may appeal, like a younger audience who may prefer puzzles over anything else, but I would suggest it might be worth waiting for a sale considering its game length of only 2-3 hours.
Like No Other: The Legend of the Twin Books
...is a point & click adventure game. Dan, a grizzled old geezer, left his life to go on an adventure, arriving in the abandoned town of Red Pines in the hopes of finding a legendary book.
⚙ Game Description & Mechanics ⚙
Upon starting, you're in a large area in an isometric (but not gridlocked) view where you can walk, react or interact with various objects for information or clues, as well as pick up items for later use. There are also collectibles in the form of caches (which for a reason I can't fathom the character keeps referring to as "caché" when it's pronounced like "cash") which can be partially hidden, but an audio cue will actually warn you of its proximity. Point & Click games are characterized by the environmental puzzles you have to solve. Sometimes, it's as simple as jumping or climbing, using an item from your inventory, or doing a combination of both with some tricky timing. Some of those puzzle interactions will require to correctly click or move your mouse cursor for it to work. Other times, you need to navigate a maze-like area, backtracking and entering through a different door to go around obstacles.
☺ What I enjoyed ☺
I really dug the art style (which doesn't need a description since the game's screen shots perfectly do them justice). What you won't see in the screen shots are the fluid movements and sometimes comedic animations, which goes hand in hand with the comic book-esque visuals. The sound effects lend themselves perfectly as well, with each click of a door, each stomp of a food step, each ruffling of grass leaves being accompanied by appropriate echo or altered volume. There definitely is an old-school touch to the inventory management. A nice touch, however, is that your character will actually hold whatever item it is you have selected, and will kneel to take it out of his backpack whenever you're looking into your inventory. There's also a clear distinction between one-time use items, which will indicate a quantity, and those that can be used again multiple times, like the golf club (often used as a handle) and the valve (used as a...valve!).
☹ What bothered me ☹
Another game that is brought down by how short it is, easily completed in about an hour or so (my <4 hour playtime includes multiple playthroughs to get some missing achievements). There's only two areas, Red Pines which has the outside area, an apartment block (comprised of a couple of hallways, stairways and flats) and a garage, and then the Museum which has the outside area, the main hall, and a few rooms and hallways. Including the "cachés", there are a dozen items you pick up in total, and you're stuck with them even when they outlived their usefulness. Even one-use items, once spent, remain in your inventory with a quantity of 0. The limited selection also means that there are very few puzzles or environmental elements with which to interact. When you do find an item, you'll often know exactly where is the one place it's meant to be used. Otherwise, the in-game tutorial stuck in the top-right corner drops any semblance of mystery the genre is meant to be full of.
My Verdict: ★★★☆☆ - "It's up to you."
It's a very average Point & Click. I won't go as far as recommend against playing, but if you have the money the asking price expects you to spend, get yourself Day of the Tentacle – Remastered, A New Beginning – Final Cut or another of the myriad of Point & Click games offered on Steam. ————————————————————————— This was just my opinion. If you found this review helpful, please consider giving it a thumbs up, and feel free to check out more of my (purely opinionated) reviews.
Adventure point & click + funny - short = Family friendly quest about the legendary book. No violence and controller friendly. Look for useful items to help advance the story.
Follow our curator for similar games
MY RATING:

[th][/th] [th]🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟✘ ✘[/th][th]8 / 10[/th]

ENGLISH REVIEW!! Warning: the following paragraph contains spoilers
(german review below) There's nothing like the thrill of adventure, right? That's why many of us indulge in the escapades of Indiana Jones, Tintin, Finn and Jake, Dora and others, or the new point-and-click game. Adventure Like No Other: The Legend From the Twin Books. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2864089287 Legend has it that there was once a talented artist who created an almost perfect forgery of a book on display at a museum in Red Pines. The replica was so accurate that employees accidentally left the original copy behind during the evacuation. Whether the story is true or not is unknown. Luckily, an aging guy named Dan decided to venture out and find out one way or another. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2864089231 As you solve the puzzles in Like No Other, you will surely become satisfied with yourself. Unfortunately, there are not enough of them for my taste, which is undoubtedly due to the overall experience, which lasts less than two hours.
End word:

Ultimately, Like No Other: The Legend Of The Twin Books fumbles its narrative and gives you no reason to invest in Dan's first escapade. The controls aren't inviting at first either, but if you stick with it, then the point is- Click staples pretty well, and by that I mean the inventory-based problems as well as the more creative puzzles will provide fun for the whole family. The puzzles may have enough appeal to make you want to buy Like No Other: The Legend Of The Twin Books, but you may have to use your imagination to think of an interesting story to go with it. As for replayability, you can go through a second time to pick up the collectible caches hidden throughout, and searching for them is pretty fun, but chances are you'll collect the lot in a single playthrough.

FAZIT:

Letztendlich fummelt Like No Other: The Legend Of The Twin Books an seiner Erzählung herum und gibt Ihnen keinen Grund, sich in Dans erste Eskapade zu investieren.
Great illustrations with a simple narrative. Easy collectibles, it beeps when you get close. I'd play more like it. Just looking for a secret passage.
Bof, bof. Attendez une grosse grosse promo.
With 1,100+ reviews, make sure to follow The Cpt Froggy Club Curator Page for plenty more!
Your adventure in to the Legend of the Twin Books begins with you recording a message after finally getting out of the office. The legend of the twin books is that there is a legendary book which was supposed to have been replaced by a replica book while on display to the public. However, the legend says that this isn’t true and that the real legendary book is the one on display. So, to find out if the legend is true, you set off on your adventure with your first port of call, Red Pines, a city which was devastated by an earthquake many years ago and long since abandoned. Upon arriving at the city, you take control of Dan, details of how to move, interact and move cursor are shown so that you know how to move etcetera. Moving towards an object or item that you can interact with will be highlighted in Orange. A lot of the time you will find nothing but keep checking as you will eventually find something which may be of use at a later time. Some items will allow you to open new areas such as keys will open doors or windows which are padlocked. There are also small puzzles to complete in order for you to move forward. Some objects can be moved by dragging them around, they may be hiding something or they can be used for something else but you’ll have to figure that out. Figuring everything out isn’t very hard so the game could be played by most folk of most ages. To help you on your way they’re some details about your current goal in the top right corner. Any items you find will be stored in your inventory and you will be required to move an item to your hand so that you can use that item, such as holding the keys to open locked doors. There are also some Caches hidden around each area for you to collect, they don’t do anything but collecting all of them in each area of the game will give you an achievement. Collecting all achievements are quite easy but will require you to play through the game twice in order to gain one of two achievements depending on which ending you received on the first playthrough. After completing one area, you’ll take Dan on to the next as you search for the museum which is said to hold the legendary books. Each area will require you to complete something so you can move forward. The game is very short, even taking my time while I tried to find all caches only took me two hours to complete the game. The game is OK I didn’t find it being anything special, the artwork is good but the story is lacking. Along with the game being short I would suggest only buying this game when it has a substantial discount if you are wanting to add this game to your Steam account. The game did run fine, I played using keyboard and mouse I haven’t tried using my gamepad and have had no problems playing. In the options there’s settings for Language (English, Portugues, German, Spanish, French, Chinese and Italian), Interface Scale, Camera Shake and Pointer Sensitivity Sliders. Resolution, Full Screen, Quality Pre-set, Antialiasing, Frame Rate Limit, V-Sync, Master, Music, Dialogue, Effects and Ambient Volume Sliders. Positives + Nice artwork + Easy game for most ages + Has achievements Negatives - Very short game - Expensive - No cards currently Help Dan to explore the abandoned city of Red Pines and uncover the truth of the twin legendary books in Like No Other: The Legend Of The Twin Books 6/10
Key provided by developer/publisher for review purposes via THE CPT FROGGY CLUB! A sweet, short, and charming adventure story from the developers who made Wind Peaks. The art style is fantastic and the generally feel of the game is amazing. Puzzles were fun to solve and the exploring the locations was fun. Story is lacking a bit, I would have liked more details as to what the book was that we were getting, and why we wanted it in the first place. Apart from that, this is a really great game to play.
