Brings back the memories of Breach & Clear of Spec Ops genre. The vibe reminds one of the newer ARMA series, and for a one person developer that is an achievement! Here's looking at you Bohemia Interactive, revamp your ARMA Tactics (which crashed and burned miserably), this SPECWAR Tactics dev is a gem! Looking forward to future updates!
Hi, Update: (Forgot to mention this earlier) Tutorial was made good as well. Immediately made the game easy to understand. Update2: Turns out I am dumb. The game mechanics for switching level height are Q/E. Found out after talking to the dev. He was great, helpful and nice in reaching that conclusion. Also he recognized the fact that it was not properly in place in the tutorial if I missed that. (UX-design). So props for the dev! Not one for writing negative reviews. First the good stuff: Game concept --> Great Game graphics, good for price range. Game stability --> better than expected. Now the stuff that (in current state on release day) makes this unplayable: - First mission I went on --> was a ship boarding and I could not see into the ship. So I had to send in soldiers without looking where to send them. And worse--> once I managed (with alot of effort) to get 1 soldier below deck I found that even when a soldier is on the deck below viewpoints do not change. Ergo something is not going as it should? So yeah, in current state I cannot recommend this. Honest opinion here says that this game should have released (or stayed if it was) early access. This is not a finished product. To end on a positive note: I honestly think the developer (based on the 1 only other review here) and him answering that and they way he did it, he/she will actively improve on the game. So I will come back a couple times to see if it improved. If it has my review will be amended.
First off gonna start off that this game isn't perfect. It was made by one dev but was honestly done extremely well. The game has lots of mechanics that I always wished were together and it came out quite well. Even though there's only about 8 Special forces units in the game it is definitely outclassed that each of the units have the unique nations camo, which I love about it. The small details. You can tell the heart and soul went into making a lot of the parts for the game but I thoroughly enjoy this game. Also to add, the developer is working well with everyone to snuff out a lot of the bug launches. So good for him!
It is a single developer game, so we should not expect the production quality of a a Triple A studio, yet, the game lacks many things we would consider basics in any game. It feels more like a prototype/demo or an early access than a a complete game, that is how it is being sold as. So, after let's go to the point and start with the good and bad points, and what would make me change the review to a positive one: - The AI is completely braindead. When you most see how bad is, is in city assaults, where you must capture and hold an area until the enemy runs out of reinforcements or a progress bar is completed. You can see both allied and enemy AI roaming around ignoring the objetive area while ignoring each other, just waiting for you to take action. - The management feels lacking. While you can train your soldiers, research new equipment, and upgrade your facilities, it is not fun, and more like an annoying chore you must complete to get anything else than an M4, or the basic grenade and medkit. Adding more variety to this first tier, for example, the AK-47 and the MP-5, would make early gameplay more entertaining and dinamic, rather than waiting for "days" (cycles) to the research to complete, just to have the option of playing stealthy. - While the enemy variety is not the most amusing ever seen, it feels enough, the problem lies in your own troops: you have access to multinational operators, ranging from the most known like US Rangers, Seals, or Green Berets, the British SAS or the German KSK, to other less known or directly making their first appeareance in a videogame (not counting mods), like the Spanish FGNE, or the Australian SAS. But, and here comes the but... they all feel the exact same. Yes, the SAS can call an airstrike, and Green Berets have support of local troops, so theorically you can deploy 12 operatives instead of the 6 members team, but... there is literally just a MARPAT, the arid and regular AOR uniforms, a diving suit, a Gorkha in 2 camouflages, AUSCAM, the woodland Flecktarn (despite being a desertical enviroment), the US Woodland, and... Multicam. Taking into account that there is special forces from France, Spain, Germany, Netherlands, Latvia, Russia, United Kingdom and United States, in the end, it feels they all are a simple name change for US troopers. Even if they are not in use anymore, a DPM or MTP would make the British forces way more interesting than a generic Multicam, same with Spanish or Latvian. - There is a severe lack of armament. There is only 2 pistols, both the exact same, only 1 SMG (whose model and icon have absolutely nothing in common except that they both are MP5's), 2 machine guns (again, with problems of the icon and model not matching), a single sniper rifle, and 5 assault rifles, which 2 are the same, but with and with out supressor. - Same happens with the equipment, having 2 grenades that are the exact same thing, yet you need to research the second one, and, having many different vests, that are basically the same, but with different camouflage pattern. - The ship assault are not fun to do, as the "planning mode" (visually similar to Door Kickers) is poorly made, trying to make a single room entry a pain, and working better to just select all your operatives, and throw them into a corridor where braindead AI is waiting with out taking cover, hoping for the less bad result. - The map campaign is pretty bad-looking, reminding more to an early Total War game (see Medieval 1 or 2, Shogun 1 or Romer 1), or to Mount & Blade, per se, it is neither good nor bad, is just a visual preference, but, I would prefer to at least, see curves though a river course rather than a straight line with small bumps of dirt trying to hide it. - There is no "post game", once you finish a campaign, it simply restarts, no congratulation message, no credits, no nothing, just a campaign restart, although you keep your team and researchs, so I guess it is good to do the same unfunny missions again and again with out unlocking nothing new? - The guns sound is not the worst I have ever heard, but, if it possible, please... change the AK-47's sound, it is really annoying, especially when everyone except maybe your operators, are using them. - There is a bug with tracer ammunation, where they go across every possible object, until they exit the map, add the fact that once detected, the enemy AI will not stop shooting until you kill them, and you get a really annoying situation where you do not know if you are under fire by an unknown enemy, or it is just the same bot that spotted you 5 minutes ago that is still shooting. Although I have said pretty bad things of the game, I did like the idea of having a some sort of new Jagged Alliance game, although more based on Special Operations rather than managing a mercenary group, but, I miss many of the great management options those games had, or, if the game is supposed to be more action, and less time worrying about training tropps, or managing every aspect of the group, the current options hinder said action more than making it an interesting feature. If there is further updates correcting at least the bad AI, and adding more maps (you literally have like 7 or 8 different maps only, with out counting the 3 different ship models) and correcting some of the most severe problems, like the lack of deep management (or its presence), and some variety in weapons and equipment, especially among the enemies, as it seems they only have AK-47s around, I would probably change the review to a positive one, as the game itself, does not have bad ideas, just executes them a bit poorly.
This game looks good as well as different but I'm unable to play as of yet. It's loads up slowly at the main screen but can't go any further.
This needs some polishing on missions (took out a bunch of patrols but it still says I did none) and the on-ship interface could use some work but this is a great game already. Its like Door Kickers and Jagged Alliance mixed. You can plan and execute, or execute in real-time, or execute in real-time slow motion. Controls are super easy (c, v and left shift basically). Developer is incredibly responsive. Definitely worth the cost of a beer.
Something to keep in mind this game was made by one person and this is the first game they ever made. With that being said this game is very good for the price. Yes their are things that need improving but the great thing about the dev he listens and is actively trying work with community to fix the issues. If you like military strategy games I recommend giving this game a shot
Abandonware. No updates in a whole year and new bugs might not be fixed, so I wouldn't recommend buying it.
Before playing any game the first thing I do is go into the settings and pick the graphical settings I prefer. This game does not allow me to change resolution, it defaults to the lowest resolution possible. If I scroll the resolutions and use apply or confirm all that happens is the game screen flashes and then when I check the settings im back on some old gameboy like resolution. I get that graphically the game is not amazing looking and I am fine with that, but why it wont allow me to increase my screen resolution is beyond me. It has the options in game, it just simply will not lock any of them in when I apply them. I wont refund the game as from the screenshots/reviews it sounds like a single Developer has built something cool and I want to support that, but not being able to change the screen resolution kills it for me before I even get started :(
