Spectrum Break is a synth-infused physics platformer, where you reshape levels with neon light. Blocks in each level float in zero gravity and can be pushed around by the player, causing them to light up in a burst of vibrant color and sound. Light up all blocks to win.
Spectrum Break
A first project from an ambitious newcomer developer, and its the best possible kind of indie game. The kind made by someone who is themselves a gamer, who dreams to make the kind of game they've always wanted to play. Spectrum Break is like a cosmic playground, where the real joy comes from the interactivity of watching your actions shape the sea of colors and shapes around you. While there is a proper routine to finishing each level it has a very open ended approach with no real right way or order to light up the geometrical anomalies that compose the stage, leaving room for creativity and creating an experience engaging to all ages and skill levels.
Gameplay
It's like free-form skateboard parkour on a rainbow road of neon blocks. It's very feel-good and pleasing "touch'em'all" in the same way that growing your ball of crazy world debris in the legendary Katamari Damacy felt weirdly satisfying. Watching the lifeless outlines of blocks light up and coast into the sea of other transparent shapes in the neon stars above, brightening them all up in the sky in an impressive chain reaction feels good when you have the physics down. Blocks form pathways to travel along and light up as they are touched, drifting and falling with your weight when you skate across them. Moving quickly to stay on top of the floating pieces before they drift away, many of these shapes that need to be lit are out of reach and only by utilizing the physics of nearby blocks will you be able to push them into the faraway pieces to light them up and complete the level. These solutions get more and more complex as you progress, with new shapes and gimmicks such as directional blocks that fly in the indicated direction once touched forcing you to consider the order to ride each platform in. Its hard to describe just how good actually playing Spectrum Break feels, and pictures or video don't really do the wonderful physics justice. Dashing across the moving surfaces and sliding down curved half-pipes among the explosion of colors and flipping your little board dude as high as you can to just barely graze that last needed shape, or knock one into it. It doesn't look like much, but its the kind of game you have to really feel to get why its good. The physics are just so chill and the controls are pixel-perfect.
Visuals/Sound
Overall it has a very simple charm to it. The little stick dude (or dudette, who can really say) on your magical floating board and the shapes are all very minimal in essence, but its the usage of colors that will really make Spectrum Break stand out. Satisfying explosions of color fill the air as each empty neon rectangle touches one another, and brightly vibrant psychedelic stars fall in a strange meteor shower behind you. For something of such a simple nature, the colors and sound are really used in absolute harmony by the developer to create a pleasing assault on the senses. The synthwave soundtrack here is outstanding. On par with some of the best "retrofuture" music out there, the warm tones of synth are nostalgic enough to make your ears melt in the same way old Lazerhawk or Com Truise would. Pleasing bass tones accompanied by shimmering electric atmospherics pulse and flow in rhythm with the explosion of cosmic colors in the sky behind you, and make the fitting retrofuture atmosphere in Spectrum Break blissfully perfect.
Final Thought
Spectrum Break is mesmerizing, it's hypnotizing. It just sucks you right in with its calming and fascinating Zen garden of reacting colors. Its also just really damn relaxing to play, and the challenge comes from your desire to hit that last faraway shape in some stylish way. The solutions especially later in the many levels are so incredibly clever that they are just as fun to interact with as they are to watch play out, exploding into the distant sky in a colorful display of neon fireworks in some unique way every time.

(Got this game for free courtesy of the developer's submission to SteadyGiveaways. Thanks!)
Give me a break, give me a break. Give me a break of that Spectrum Break!
Colorful blocks, challenging gameplay, and a great concept of "get all the boxes to move to beat the level" to a sick beat to boot? Sign up now! Don't let the beautiful graphics fool you, though. This game is tough, especially if you're going for the speedrunner achievements. Of course, it's hard to put it down with that sick beat to keep you entertained. There's 55 stages of an increasing difficulty of hell...can you survive? You can double jump, you can jump using ropes, and you have an infectious viral touch that makes boxes glow with beautiful colors! Not much else to say about this game that I haven't said already...though, sometimes the controls feel off...like it takes a little bit to get running, but it takes a bit to stop. So...worth it? Let your eyes be the decider on this one. Personally, my eyes said "DO IT!", so I did...and I don't really have many regrets, other than my total time being 4 minutes slower than the developer's time. The price tag is rather steep at $15, but if it's on sale for about $5 (a steal) or $10, I'd say to give this game another look. Give it a try if you're up for a challenge with neon lights! 8/10 You deserve a Spectrum Break. Treat yourself!
Good Developer which listens to its fans and fixes all the bugs!
First of all, the game looks good. I like the neon/80s-esque look, it's on a somewhat black background, but it's pleasing on the eyes and the music is chill. That being said... This game has potential, but it's ruined by some flaws. I've cleared around 40 something levels and most of them are either: a. Levels that almost solve themselves b. Gigantic levels which just feels like a chore to complete because of the movement. You're surfing around as this little coloured dude and you have to touch the blocks in each level to light them up. If a lit up block touches a non-lit block, the non-lit block will light up. Pretty simple. The trouble comes when you're jumping from block to block. There's nothing underneath, so one failed jump and you have to start over. This wouldn't be so bad, if your momentum isn't randomly getting stopped! Time and time again, my little dude has decent speed and I jump from a block and he just steps on the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ breaks, where I often then just fall to my death. Jumping is also sometimes a guessing game. If you hold down the jump button, you jump higher, that makes sense. But sometimes when you're jumping from block to block, it suddenly won't jump high and I have to think quick to try and survive. There's not a whole lot of air control, and the slightest touch of a block makes it move in a certain direction. This also affects your jumps. You jump in the direction that the block is facing. For example, if a rectangle is vertical and you hit the side, your next jump is more or less horizontal. This leads to you having to figure out how to solve this "puzzle". So, you have to jump from block to block. The blocks move the moment you touch them and this will affect your jump and your speed. So if the level is huge, and huge levels appears more often when you get up near the 40s, So every block moves around and you jump on one and it just flies off toward the bottom, but your jump gets halted for whatever reason and you fall to your death. If the levels weren't so damn big, or if the movement was better, this wouldn't be a problem. But when you try to walljump on a block, to get to safety and it just moves further and further towards your doom, and you slowly fall together with it, it just gets annoying. Because you could be close to finishing a huge level, only to miss one block and you can't surf back to it, because all of the other blocks decided to move in all directions
Really good game feel.
This game is amazing, the colours, the lights and all on 200MB. It's definitely worth a try and a fresh take on a fun genre
