Insanely good storytelling, unlucky that the game has been delisted.
★★★★★ 9/10 ★★★★ Spec Ops: The Line is one of those games that starts off looking like a fairly standard military shooter, only to slowly reveal what it actually is. The gameplay is solid, the gunplay feels satisfying & the sandstorm-filled Dubai setting creates an incredible atmosphere, but the real strength of this game is its story. What begins as a routine rescue mission gradually descends into something much darker, forcing us to question the choices we make & the consequences of blindly following orders. The psychological aspect of the game is absolutely brilliant. The way it plays with our expectations of a military shooter, constantly blurring the line between heroism & brutality, is something very few games have managed to pull off. Walker’s descent throughout the campaign is disturbing, uncomfortable & incredibly well-written. By the end, the game leaves us questioning whether we were ever the "good guys" to begin with. It has a few glitches & bugs and the combat can feel a little dated by today's standards, & some sections become repetitive, but honestly, that hardly matters. The atmosphere, writing, voice acting & sheer emotional impact completely make up for it. The use of Dubai's environment & sandstorms is especially impressive, turning the setting itself into part of the gameplay. Unfortunately, Spec Ops: The Line has been removed from the Steam store in my region, so getting a copy meant hunting down a global key & paying an absolutely exorbitant price for it. Was it worth it? Absolutely. Some games are worth playing simply because they're fun; Spec Ops is worth playing because it stays with you long after you've finished it. A masterpiece that disguises itself as a generic military shooter, only to completely pull the rug out from under you. This is not a game about war. It's a game about what war does to you.

15 years ago... I don't think I will ever be able to describe the feeling I had when I realized what I was playing. A friend made a big deal and show of "Trust me, you need to play this game. Nothing I can say will make you understand how good of a game this is." I don't know why, but I immediately bought it and started playing. "I hate Call of Duty, but let's settle in and play a mindless military shooter." I finished the game in a weekend. It took me a month to be able to play another video game or consume any media. My mind just kept thinking about this. The game released exactly when it needed to, and no other game will be able to perfectly pull the "You aren't playing what you think you are." card. Never again in history will people be able to go in expecting a mindless military shooter and by the end they change their major to Philosophy one semester from graduating. Best game I have ever played in my life and it has nothing to do with the gameplay.
Overall, it's a pretty good corridor shooter. The story and gameplay are top-notch, with different enemy types, a variety of weapons, beautiful city views, and perhaps most importantly, the ending you get depends on your decisions. For me, the game isn't without its flaws: I got stuck in sand textures a couple of times, which is basically a death sentence on the hardest difficulty. The cover movement system is also poorly implemented; sometimes, instead of moving from cover to cover, the character might just stand there. Finally, I'd like to mention the rather small number of safepoints. My rating: ✭✭✭✭✰
Best military game ever made its a shame it got removed :(
