HOW are there no reviews for this game?! It is awesome! I have been waiting a really long time for something like this to come along and it is very well done. It had my vote for VR GOTY. It is polished, plays great, soundtrack is hilarious and a great compliment to the game, more people should check this out. There aren't enough VR city builders and the ones there are fall flat. This is an amazing VR game!
Experienced on the Oculus Quest 2
You can view my gameplay & initial impressions here: https://youtu.be/-agrdtFhuk8 I do think Spacefolk City is a good game and worthy of recommending. However, it definitely is not for everyone or a must-experience for VR by any stretch of the imagination. It's a nicely put together game that will appeal to anyone looking for a casual city building (space-themed) experience. However, if you're looking for a hard-core city sim, then you will be sorely disappointed here. This game trades in depth for accessibility. That's not a bad thing - I enjoyed the art style, music, & the casual gameplay. I do wish you had more control over the experience. For example, you select a house to build but you'll get a random configuration for the house and then you'll be limited to where you can put it. You can only put it in an area with power & the grid area is not very big. I would have liked more control over the look of the house (the color, the configuration, or even the ability to modify or change the house after it's main core is built). Instead, you're limited to decorations that are related to the spacefolk. One can be a banana, so they prefer banana decorations on the house. You have some choices on what banana decorations to place, but again, the choices are limited. So while it is easy to build, you never quite build things the way that you want, even in Sandbox mode. So yes, there is a sandbox mode where you can build whatever you want ... sort of. You're limited by the placement of clouds and the pre-existing configuration of the space. You have no say at all in that. And again, you're limited in where you can put stuff. If you want more space folk (to help you build stuff), you'll be having to do almost the same chores as in the main campaign. So the "sandbox mode" is not really much of a sandbox. Despite all the above, is it still possible to make creations your own? Yes! You definitely can. If you're very creative, you'll find ways around the limitations. But on the other hand, if you just want to complete the objectives, you will make some rather Spartan accommodations that are not exactly aesthetically pleasing and the game does seem to push you into this direction until you develop the know-how to get around them. Game is running on the Unity Engine. On my RTX 3080, I was getting a steady 90 fps. I did not experience any serious issues or bugs (besides not being able to blow up the ladders). This game has a grab to pull close or push away mechanic. You can turn by grabbing with both motion controllers. It has a very cute art style and I thought the musical soundtrack matched the game quite well. It took me a little less than 4 hours to get past halfway through the game's content (so maybe 8 hours to complete the main campaign, but also add extra time since you'll probably want to play in sandbox mode and you can keep playing in any of the levels even after you complete the objectives). Spacefolk City is a VR city-building game in space. It worked on my HTC Vive and Index system, looked ok, played ok, sounded ok. Has a tutorial mission that you have to complete. Has a grip movement mode to move the world to where you want it. Has a 20 song background music radio with mute and volume controls. Game has 7 missions, you have to complete one to unlock the next mission, and has a sandbox. The sandbox is Limited by the amount of clouds that it has for you to power your creation. Does work out of the box. You might be busy for a while with this game. I could not make it out of the tutorial mission, could not figure it out, and got bored. I got a free key for this from the Steam Curator program. Only one chapter in so far and seems fun. To be continued...
This game is a species-redeeming work of art! Need more levels, of course.
Really great game that has just enough complexity for me as a casual player and time fly's by when playing and it is easy yo loose track of time when playing this. Really cannot recommend this enough (i display this for numerous hours on viveport before making the purchase here just to show that i have more experience than the 1.7 hours i just played last night). Thanks for the great game.
This is easily my favorite game that I play on my Quest Pro and it got even sharper with my Quest 3. The game is possible to play in Virtual Reality or in Mixed Reality. The characters ore whimsical and fun and the building properties are well done. I have put countless hours into the Quest version of the game and can easily say that the PCVR Steam version not only runs significantly faster and smoother, but the graphics are richer and higher quality all around.
It's just tedious and boring (in my opinion).
This is a very fun little city builder. I really enjoy a game that you can just chill and play. It can be challenging at times, but not so stressful that you couldn't play it after a long day at work.
I bought this because another game by this dev team, Down The Rabbit Hole, blew my mind. This game is good, but not mindblowing. PROS: This is a fun game, no doubt about it. The cute style and spot-on music really make this enjoyable. The UI is very intuitive and it's quite enjoyable ripping apart asteroids for their contents. CONS: The complexity is a bit low, for a city builder. There are a handful of challenge levels that are pretty easy to beat and can each be tackled in a sitting. At just past 6 hours in, I was able to defeat all the levels. I've not yet tried Sandbox mode, though I doubt it will be more complex than the challenge levels. There's no real danger. Sure, there's solar flares, but they are slow to come and are very easy to avoid. This game would have been improved tremendously by adding more struggles and failures. (The motto of my favorite game of all time is "Losing is Fun"...and it is.) But there's never a risk of actually losing here. FINAL THOUGHTS I enjoy this game. I would probably let my kids play it, except that they would probably NEVER get off.
