I love this mixture of Visual Novels and Point&Click/Escape Room games. You play as Gigi, a journalist who covers celebrity news, but her passion lies in crime stories. One day, she heard the news of a serial murderer, which police are still investigating. She became curious and decided to investigate the murders herself to write a story for her readers. Alas, this wasn't as simple as she expected as a fourth woman was murdered, and Gigi received a threatening letter. This game is based on a real murder story 'The Jars Murderer The Rainy Night Butcher'. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3283406120 The English translation isn't bad; the names are different, but other than that, the story is well-translated. The choices of this game matter and have enormous consequences. You have relationship points with each major character, affecting how the story goes. There is a manual save that'd save you from repeating some of the parts, especially the QTE which were annoying, if you fail on them you'll be directly going to the main menu. Saving occasionally would be good; remember, you only have six slots, and this game has ten chapters and multiple side stories. Each chapter has an escape room puzzle where you have to collect items to solve something. You also have a journal with the victims' information, which you need to compare with one another to get some clues. You also need to collect money by either stealing or writing good stories and choose the title your boss would find good to get the promotion you are looking for. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3283408659 The photo gallery is beautiful, the artwork is good, and the characters are designed. You can collect those photos when your relationship is high with the other characters, or you take a route of a major story requiring you to reply to the game and change the choices. You can always skip previously read conversations. The characters are likable except for a few of them. The main character can be hot-headed, and you wish to smack her to stop being nosy and getting herself into trouble, but they portray her as a journalist so well. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3283406039 Pros: +Interesting story. +Excellent writing. +Interesting and likable characters. +Nice soundtracks. +Good puzzles. +Good voiceovers. +Collectables (Mobile photos and story photos) +Multiple endings. +Multiple interesting short side stories. +Manual save. (6 Slots) +Steam achievements. Cons: -No hinting system. -When you try to save by navigating the settings icon, a couple of the conversation lines will be skipped (Click right click to save instead) I like the additional side stories which you'll access by the end of the game, those adds depth to the characters and you'll understand their actions more. I highly recommend this game, I wish to find more games like it! I really wanted to get into this VN, but it reads like it was written by a 15 year old. I don't know if that's just the translation or what, but it is super cringe from beginning to end. The story's relatively boring, too. It just never really picked up speed.
For other game reviews, please follow us at What The Game?
Rainy Butcher is a visual novel with some puzzle solving built into the gameplay. Unfortunately it's hampered by a rather wooden translation. On the bright side, the low price point makes this one much easier to recommend. As far as the visual novel genre goes, Rainy Butcher has everything you'd expect from a professionally made game. You have the ability to skip lines you've already seen, and there's a healthy amount of save slots, for those of you who dislike being tied to a single save for a playthrough. There's a constant soundtrack of music going on in any scene, and it's serviceable. That being said, it's very generic. There's not really a good track, but none are particularly weak. The game is fully voiced, but only in Cantonese (Chinese). That leads us to the first real stumbling block for the game: the translation. It's competent enough, but they're obviously literally translating things. If it's machine translated, they at least paid for the advanced model, but there's still more than a few errors with spelling and grammar. But more importantly, it all reads very dryly. Conversations feel unnatural, even when there's no real errors, as do descriptions of scenes. This is a very real pet peeve of mine. Don't get me wrong – I understand why foreign companies want to get into the English speaking market, but I feel like there needs to be more of an effort made on their part. A poorly translated game means that I'm going to care less about the story, and it's definitely immersion-breaking. (That being said, I'm sympathetic to both the cost of translation services, and the difficulty of doing it on your own, especially for indie developers.) The art is fine, though it all reminds me more of the art you'd see in a hidden object game or mobile title, particularly for the character portraits. Unsuprisingly, this game actually debuted as an Android/iOS free to play title, which certainly explains it a bit. You can find it in your app store of choice as “Serial: Rainy Night Butcher”). Like the music, it's fine, but just very generic. For a game about a serial killer, I'd have expected a bit more style, which is somewhat disappointing. Pretty much everything in the game feels very much like a “by the numbers” decision, and while I'm not going to condemn them for their choice, I would like to have seen a bit more risk taking in order to make the game stand out. The gameplay is divided between visual novel sections that occasionally lead to a choice (which may affect your ending) and puzzle solving “investigation” sections. While the VN sections are fine (translation issues aside), the puzzle solving feels forced and in many cases, just defied logic due to the setting. While some puzzles would make sense in the context of the game, others would be silly. For example, one scene had me looking for the combination to a locked cabinet in someone's room. The combination was written on the blades of a fan, which I had to figure out how to turn off. (Because apparently the fan didn't have an on-off switch, for some unknown reason.) Once I turned the fan off, I discovered they had written the combination on it, which is something no normal person would do, EVER. Another scene had me in my boss' office, and he had a desk drawer which was locked with various shapes as the answer. And again, he literally had the answer scattered around his office in four different locations. This sort of nonsense works in Resident Evil and similar games because the game world is clearly very different from our own. Rainy Butcher's world, however, IS NOT. We are meant to view this as being the real world, and people in our world don't have weird and convoluted locks at the newspaper office, nor do they scatter clues around unless they're schizophrenics. You can't give up on the puzzles once you've started – you have to complete the room, and as often as not, they feel very tedious. You're given a brief glimpse of hot spots, but those go away, leaving you to sometimes blindly click around until you find the exact spot it wants you to click to investigate something more clearly. The puzzles themselves range from exceedingly obvious into “what the heck do you want me to do here?” and none of them are very fun to solve. I feel like a hint system or a skip option would REALLY have made this a lot more tolerable. Fans of the visual novel genre in particular are likely to find this off-putting, because the story stops entirely until you get through these mandatory sessions. I understand WHY the puzzles are here – the dev is trying to add more “gameplay” to the experience, but these just don't fit. And so in a nutshell, if I had to give the game a school grade, it would be a C. It's serviceable, but not really memorable. Nothing here really stands out, and there's a couple of points that definitely drag it down, albeit slightly. I'd advise anyone to try the game on mobile first, as some of my complaints are definitely more of an opinion, as opposed to objective fact.
Overall this is a quite decent mystery visual novel with point&click gameplay! The story itself isn't unique and had several predictable moments but I still found it quite intriguing and fun for having that nostalgic, classic detective-thriller plot. I especially enjoyed that there are choices that actually result in different endings! Also the side stories are pretty fun. Additionally the protagonist is very entertaining, together with most side characters. The general gameplay is quite nice too, mainly the investigations are interesting and not too difficult. However I greatly recommend to frequently save the game-progress, since there are multiple quick-time events that might immediately lead to a dead end! Otherwise the game has pretty art, great voice-acting and good music, which could profit from more variety though. Altogether I'd say that this game doesn't necessarily offer anything new, since it mainly explores already existing concepts without going into much detail, however I still certainly enjoyed it and found myself entertained most of the time! I believe it's worth a try for those into that kind of games.
Rainy Butcher, developed by Genunie Studio and 傅真 and published by Genunie Studio and Paras Games, is a gripping indie visual novel and puzzle-driven mystery that immerses players in a tense, atmospheric journey through crime, deceit, and moral conflict. Set against the perpetually rain-soaked backdrop of Hong Kong, the game follows a young journalist who becomes entangled in the hunt for a brutal serial killer known as the “Rainy Night Butcher.” What begins as an ambitious career pursuit quickly transforms into a psychological and moral investigation that blurs the line between truth and obsession. The game’s greatest strength lies in its ability to fuse narrative drama, investigative gameplay, and cultural realism into a cohesive experience that feels both personal and cinematic. The story unfolds in a way that feels grounded yet unsettlingly intimate. You play as a reporter whose curiosity and determination lead you deep into a web of murder cases that the police have failed to solve. The mystery grows with each discovery, and the deeper you investigate, the more the case begins to unravel into something larger and more personal. The writing effectively captures the emotional and professional pressures faced by journalists and investigators, portraying both ambition and vulnerability. The dialogue is naturalistic, occasionally laced with dark humor or melancholy, and the interactions with side characters—each with their own motivations and secrets—help flesh out the world. The narrative allows for multiple endings, which depend on how you navigate the investigation, treat the people you encounter, and interpret the evidence you uncover. These branching outcomes give the story replayability and weight, rewarding players who pay attention to detail or make morally complex choices. Rainy Butcher stands out for its unique tone and presentation. Visually, the game embraces a simple yet evocative art style that effectively conveys atmosphere without relying on high-budget polish. The muted color palette, dominated by grays and cool blues, mirrors the constant downpour and the emotional heaviness of the story. Every scene feels damp, cold, and enclosed—a claustrophobic quality that reinforces the psychological intensity of the narrative. While the animations and interface are minimal, they serve the game’s noir aesthetic well, focusing attention on dialogue, sound, and subtle environmental cues. The inclusion of full Cantonese voice acting is a particularly impressive touch, grounding the game in its Hong Kong setting and lending authenticity to its characters. The performances are expressive and believable, adding emotional depth to key scenes and helping bridge the gap between the visual novel format and cinematic storytelling. Sound design plays a crucial role in shaping the game’s atmosphere. The rhythmic patter of rain forms a constant backdrop, creating a meditative tension that seeps into every moment. The music alternates between ambient tracks and low-key electronic melodies, accentuating the loneliness and urgency of the investigation. When the game shifts from quiet exploration to moments of revelation or confrontation, the soundscape adapts seamlessly, pulling the player deeper into its moody world. This attention to audio detail elevates the experience, making even the smallest moments feel immersive. It’s clear that Genunie Studio understands the power of restraint; rather than bombarding players with effects, they let silence and subtlety do much of the work. Gameplay in Rainy Butcher combines traditional visual novel storytelling with interactive investigation sequences. The player must examine evidence, compare victim profiles, solve logic-based puzzles, and make dialogue choices that can change the course of the narrative. These puzzles serve as both intellectual challenges and storytelling devices, pushing players to think like detectives while engaging emotionally with the characters. Some puzzles are straightforward and satisfying, while others lean toward trial and error or rely on obscure connections that can be frustrating. Still, these moments of difficulty add to the tension and realism of the investigation, simulating the confusion and uncertainty inherent in real detective work. The variety of tasks keeps the game from feeling static, and the alternating rhythm of story segments and gameplay sections ensures a balanced pace. While the game’s ambition and atmosphere are commendable, Rainy Butcher does show its indie limitations. The English localization, while serviceable, occasionally struggles with phrasing and syntax, making some dialogue read awkwardly. This can briefly break immersion, though it rarely detracts from the overall experience. Some puzzles could have benefited from clearer logic or visual hints, as their solutions sometimes feel unintuitive. The game’s brevity may also leave players wanting more—its story is compact and tightly paced, but it ends before fully exploring some of its more intriguing themes. However, these issues are understandable given the game’s scale and budget. What matters is that even within its limitations, the developers manage to tell a complete and emotionally resonant story that lingers after the credits roll. Rainy Butcher’s strength lies in its atmosphere and emotional engagement. It captures a sense of melancholy that runs through both its world and its characters. The constant rain becomes a metaphor for guilt, memory, and the endless cycle of violence and truth-seeking. The protagonist’s journey isn’t just about uncovering a killer—it’s about confronting the darkness within human ambition and the cost of obsession. The game’s pacing, coupled with its strong sense of place, allows players to sink into its mood completely, making it one of the more immersive experiences among recent indie visual novels. It evokes the quiet unease of classic East Asian crime dramas while adding its own layer of psychological introspection. In the end, Rainy Butcher is a haunting and deeply atmospheric mystery that thrives on subtlety, mood, and narrative conviction. It’s a testament to how a small-scale project can achieve emotional and thematic richness through careful writing and strong aesthetic direction. Despite its technical simplicity, it offers an experience that feels personal and poignant, inviting players to think critically and emotionally about the story it tells. For fans of investigative thrillers, psychological mysteries, and character-driven storytelling, Rainy Butcher delivers an experience as chilling as the rain that never stops falling. Rating: 6/10
