Good puzzle game. Just for the love of god, make those ducks walk faster, and let me undo without having to fully watch the drawn out sequence of a move .
Slightly interesting sokoban-style puzzle game about movement causing the ground to shift beneath your feet. Not much more to it that that, even with the complications of additional ducks and using blocks to traverse gaps. The only good thing about the aesthetic is the background as well; the ducks, pixel blocks, and annoyingly-long animations do the game no favors. There's much better games to play in this genre and you should play those first. Only suitable for the truly voracious sokoban devotee, not because it's difficult, but because it is at most a one trick pony with a pretty boring trick.
本作《Space Ducks: The great escape》是CosmOS 9中的一款游戏。
Hmmm. Nah. Not a fan. The controls and sound effect are so frustrating, it took me a few seconds to understand where I can walk and where I can't. When you can't walk somewhere, there's this really grating sound effect that I couldn't endure playing so frigging loud. It was such a pain. I don't understand why you have to use the 4 directional keys when just left-right would have been enough. It just feels weird. The gameplay doesn't make much sense with the whole gravity in it, it doesn't seems consistent at all, making some moves more like guesses than anything else. I definitely didn't enjoy my time with it. I don't think I'll try it another day.
Nice little puzzler with a novel mechanic of blocks falling in different directions based on the direction you step on them. Simple mechanics lead to surprising interactions. Some of the puzzle design could maybe have been tighter, but overall it explores its mechanics well. The style is really charming too. Audio, visuals and humour are great. Lots of surprising and delightful little moments. Playtime of a bit over an hour. Worth the price of entry.
For other game reviews, please follow us at What The Game?
Space Ducks is a block pusher game with a bizarre theme. A pixelated duck is controlled by the player in an outer space looking background. The goal is to get the duck to a block that apparently fuels a spaceship, then maneuver the duck to the spaceship itself and launch away from the island of blocks. Space Ducks has a very arcade-like feel and is very pixelated in appearance. There are no options in Space Ducks. Navigation of the duck is simply the arrow keys. There is an undo function that allows the player to undo moves all the way back to the beginning of a puzzle. There is also a retry function. There are no sound or graphics options. There is a constant arcade style background music that becomes a bit wearing after a while, it would be nice to be able to shut it off. As there are not much in the way of sound effects, turning the volume all the way down manually will do the job. The puzzle levels in Space Ducks seem to have one correct way to solve them, although a few appear to present alternative ways to complete the level. Once a level is completed successfully, there doesn't seem to be a way to revisit the level to try an alternative. Many of the initial levels look deceptively simple, but the rules for Space Ducks are such that that the player will easily end up on a block that gets pushed off into space or crushed when a gap causes blocks to slam together. There is also the possibility of getting swept off into space if two group of blocks slam together. There isn't a 'push' key, blocks are moved once when the duck moves onto a face. To move the same block again, the duck must be walked off of that block and back on. However, the moved block must end up attached to something or it will float off into space with the player on it. This leads to many dead-end situations. In some cases, one or two undo’s may be all that is needed, but other times, the very first block moved was the problem. Most of the levels appear to have been made where a very precise move sequence is required to complete the puzzle. As such, Space Ducks is a very static (or linear) puzzler, like many block pushers. The price is reasonable and it appears to be bug free, it’s also a very small install. Space ducks is recommended for die-hard block pusher lovers.
This one's got the biggest jam of the pack, and just such a fun atmosphere (PUN). Very low pressure (PUN) with the undo/restart buttons and never too complex in a tedious way. The lone flaw is the weird spacing (PUN?) of the keys, it's nice that R and U stand for Reset and Undo but they are not located well when the only keys you use are Tab/R/U!
I gotta be honest, Space Ducks: The great escape was a slow burn for me. Still it's a very interesting puzzle game altogether, and seeing how the different mechanics interacted and evolved was a lot of fun. It also has an "AH HA!" moment where something happens and it all kinda clicks into place, you'll know it when you see it and after that the game becomes even more enjoyable. Movement is a bit slow, but thankfully you can speed it up by pressing the directional keys twice. Overall a fun experience.
It is instantly obvious that everything runs way too slowly. Moving your character, waiting for animations to play out, even just pressing escape to get to the title screen all takes at least 3x what it should and it makes the gameplay feel restrained. I want to be able to experiment with the mechanics, but having to wait several seconds between moves is just so painful. I'm not going to be finishing this one.
+ Interesting puzzle mechanics (Sokoban meets Microgravity?) + Nice puzzles (not too easy, not too difficult) + Kinda cute (I mean they are ducks in space, how can they NOT be cute) - A bit short (only 18 levels) - No level selection? Why???
