Note: since I first wrote this some big changes, game keeps evolving :D I haven’t played an RPG in a while and I found this one fun and fresh. I’ve been enjoying the art and music. I didn’t expect to get around with an airship and that has been fun, which reminds me a lot of Secret of Mana (late in the game) or some of the FF games. (they've added some walking but making it more immersive) I’ve also been enjoying a more menu style approach to getting around towns—rather than walking around like a fool for days, which I’ve seen in a few other more recent RPGs. I don’t understand all the negative reviews with less than an hour of playtime. Play the game and you’ll have a good time. Pros Interesting airship travel No walking around and getting lost (update: some walking around but nothing I can't handle) Enjoyable graphics & music that feel a little nostalgic but unique. Clear map to explore and clear, which for people that like to pop in and out of a game to take breaks is really nice for when you completely forget what you were doing/where you were going. Cons The battles take a little big of getting used to. I know there is a “Tips & Hints” but at least in the first battle highlighting a few things would have helped me. Really would like the back button on my mouse to escape menus
Edited: 3/10/2020 -- Dev fixed the crashing issue with completing destroyed islands, so i removed that part regarding bugs in the game. Some Context: I baught this game on GoG first. Then i wanted to make a guide to help players since the game is a little lacking in explanation of mechanics, but steam wouldn't let me cause i didn't have it on steam, so i baught another copy to do that. The point being: my playtime does not reflect my real playtime (which is 5-6 hours at the time of this review). =========================================== Soul Saga is a game i've been waiting to play for awhile...and while it didn't become the JRPG it initially started as, it has changed into a simple and fun Rouge-Lite that has room for potential and being better; since it's in Early Access. The game, is unfortunately, a little bare bones. The game is beatable and all the guild members are able to be found and added to the roster...but there is little to do outside of the basic gameplay loop of Town >> explore islands >> complete quest/invasion >> return to base >> sell loot >> sleep and/or repeat Graphics wise it is clean, looks good. It won't be hyper intense graphics as I can run it smoothly (i have a GTX 620...so yeah, it's potato friendly-ish). Nothing really looks terrible, to be honest and fits the game's world. Airship exploration is tricky at first to control, but once you grasp how to drive your giant talking Koi-ship, it's enjoyable zooming across the islands, finding hidden loot spots, looting floating barrels, avoiing hazards and narrowly getting smashed by the giant Cloudking skyfish. Combat is the highlight of this game as it is a mix of ATB (active time battle) and stategically manipulating the "Wheel of Murai"...which amplifies attacks and defence depending on what "orb" the next turn (be it you or the enemy) is on. Mastering the battle system is key to ensuring you have plenty of HP to keep exploring (as your Ship HP is your Party HP) and handling more battles or bosses. Items also help mitigate HP loss so you WILL be using and buying items alot. Story-wise the game tells you what it's about, introduces characters when they appear and that's about it for the most part. Given, again, this is Early Access...odds are more story rich stuff and character development will be added as time goes by. Difficulty is customizable via sliders...making sure you can have the PERFECT level of difficulty and benefits the make sure you enjoy the game the way you want to...AND you can adjust it anytime you want in-game! Very Nice! Unfortuantely the game does NOT tell you how the game works in many important areas and you are left to pay attention and LEARN how to play and what works the hard way...which, again, may likely change down the road. Until then, there is a guide you can reference to educate you on these things. :) Controls work well on a controller...the only problem being that the Ship is a little tricky to master so you will hit islands and stuff alot. The difficulty sliders also adjust the drift of the ship so you can make it easier to control. Sound wise, everything sounds great. The music has a core "theme" you'll notice between the battle themes and a couple others. Sound Effects are good and not annoying..unless you hate the Radar Beep during exploration. Bugs are few...There's also another bug that might be related to steam itself, but i seem to be the only one that has it...it corrupts something in the game after closing it and steam goes into a Verification Loop and then Content File Locked when reinstalling the game. So this has prevented me from playing on steam at the time of this review. No one else has the bug that i know of so...i dunno...but i can still play on GoG so, eh. *shrug* For the most part, the game is stable. Overall, i like the game...i would of loved to have it as it's first incarnation as a JRPG, but i believe the developer can still implement those aspects with a bit of imagination and brainstorming with supporters/fans/backers. The game is EARLY ACCESS...and people, i've noticed, seem to forget what that means as far as a video game is concerned. This is NOT the final form of the game, it's only the beginning and those who jump into the pool early wont have much to do for now, but will get to enjoy what is there until more toys are added to the proverbial pool. Get this = if you like Rouge-lites, stategic combat, difficulty, want to support the dev Wait = If you're not much for Early Access or are on the fence Move on = If you dislike rouge-lites, strategic combat, difficulty. Til then... Take Care of Yourselves and Have Fun.
I waited for this game since 2013 and I was really excited when this game was on sale. Of course I saw the reviews, but I want to support the developer and give my insights. I like how the narrator explains the story behind the world. Gives us some background, however I would love to get a more story sense from the main character because we jumped right into the guild. The airship system can be improved. It was really hard to control with my mouse and I keep bumping into islands. I would recommend having an HP bar for the ship so I know when to panic lol. Or be more careful. One more thing I want a tutorial on the fighting system which can help tons of people out. I can see potential in this game. If everyone can give their opinions and not give the creater a hard time :) . I'll be posting more reviews
Not what it was supposed to be. Looked great when i backed it on Kickstarter. It's an awful mess now.
Dont give up man, the game has potential! Check Space Rangers, you can inspire from it and add some cool stuff, cause games have some similiar ideas in general.
Friendly advice. Do not play on any difficulty beyond cake. Why? Because the game hasn't been hashed out fully and punishes you severely with no tutorial on gameplay mechanics. Get a feel of the game, then play it on the harder difficulties if you so please. Great promise though, gives a old square enix vibe.
I bought this game on sale when it was in my wishlist. On paper, this sounds like the perfect game for me. A great fantasy turn based rpg is exactly what I was looking for. Initially, the game was nearly unplayable. There was no tutorial for the gameplay elements, I played on "Cake" mode and the first level was still incredibly hard, and I had difficulty controlling the airship right away. Since my initial play, I have revisited it and noticed some incredible updates. There are fully rendered 3D environments for the Hub world (Dunhaven), there are settings to control specific aspects of difficulty, and based on the gap between my initial plays and what it is like just a few weeks later, I expect many more significant changes to improve the game play experience. Give it a shot!
Fun exploration with plenty of witty commentary. Smooth and Dynamic combat system. Many ease of access/Quality of Life aspects to help you along in the first bit. Zero hand holding, making you actually have to think (and that's a good thing!). Don't be fooled, this game is not a cakewalk. It's difficult to master, but a great experience to get there. With new content and tweaks coming in the future, suspend what you think the game "should be" and enjoy it for what is presented. Is it for Everyone? No. But no game ever is, whether its a "AAA" dev or not.
I'm glad I refunded this almost immediately. The original promise and prototype was a classic JRPG with charming art and a simple but enjoyable enough story. It was then remade into...this janky mess. Sure there's a big overworld map but there's nothing to actually explore. You can go over there where it looks the exact same as over here, and getting there is a massive pain because apparently realistic airship controls are made out of hot garbage. If you dare to complain on the forums you're told that you're being aggressive and banned. On the one hand I hate to pile on and I was really hoping the developer would take the feedback to heart when this first released and go back to the roots of this project. Instead there has been no communication on steam in over a year and no updates in waaaaaay over a year. This is a dead and abandoned project and it shouldn't still be on sale. Don't buy until you see another update. Even if it does get revived there's no telling what game you'll actually end up getting.
