I had this for console so many years ago and I reached level 3000, lost all save for the game when I lost the console but steam made me happy by giving me this gem of a game back. Absolutely love the lore, characters and overall game play. I spent hours on this game. {SPOILER?} By far my favorite, it is repetitive but the ability to get different endings is just amazing.
Such an underrated game in story and gameplay. It sort of flew under the radar on its ps2 release since it came out after the ps3 was already out. Really wish the quality of this steam port was just a bit better, but happy to have it. Seems like there are several animation bugs that were not in the ps2 edition as well as no support for modern aspect ratios.

Игра хорошая, но вылетает зараза. Не могу советовать по этой причине. Играйте в неё на консоли или эмуляторе.
Soul Nomad & the World Eaters, developed by Nippon Ichi Software, Inc. and Codeglue and published by NIS America, Inc., is a tactical RPG that stands out less for polish and more for personality. It takes a familiar strategy framework and pushes it in directions that feel unusually bold, particularly in how it handles tone, player choice, and narrative consequences. While it shares DNA with other Nippon Ichi titles, it carries a darker edge that gives it a distinct identity, one that becomes more apparent the deeper you get into its story. The narrative begins with a simple but effective hook: the protagonist becomes bound to Gig, a powerful and irreverent entity with a past tied to destruction and conquest. From that point on, the story is driven as much by their uneasy partnership as by the broader conflict involving the World Eaters—massive threats capable of destroying entire regions. Early on, the plot follows a fairly conventional structure, introducing allies and establishing the stakes, but it gradually evolves into something more complex. The relationship with Gig adds a constant undercurrent of tension, as his influence challenges the protagonist’s choices and shapes how events unfold. This dynamic gives the dialogue a sharper tone than many RPGs, often blending humor with darker undertones. One of the game’s most compelling aspects is its branching narrative. Players are not limited to a single interpretation of the story; instead, they are given the opportunity to follow different paths that lead to dramatically different outcomes. The standard route presents a more traditional heroic journey, but an alternate path allows players to embrace a far more destructive role, fundamentally altering the tone and direction of the game. This duality adds significant replay value and reinforces the idea that the story is shaped by the player’s decisions, not just by scripted events. The gameplay departs from typical grid-based tactics in favor of a squad-oriented system. Rather than controlling individual characters across the battlefield, players organize units into groups, each led by a central figure. These squads move and act as single entities, and when combat occurs, it shifts into a side-view sequence where all members participate in the exchange. This structure places greater emphasis on preparation and formation rather than moment-to-moment positioning. Building effective squads—balancing roles, abilities, and synergies—becomes the core strategic challenge, offering a different kind of depth compared to more granular tactical systems. Customization plays a major role in this system. Players can recruit a wide variety of unit types and arrange them within squads to unlock different bonuses and effects. Experimenting with these combinations is both necessary and rewarding, as it allows for a range of strategies that can adapt to different situations. However, while the system is flexible, it can also feel somewhat opaque, especially when managing larger numbers of units. The interface does not always make it easy to understand how different elements interact, which can slow down the process of refining strategies. Combat itself can be divisive. The squad-based approach is unique, but it also reduces the level of direct control players have during battles. Outcomes are influenced heavily by preparation, sometimes making encounters feel less interactive than expected. While this design reinforces the importance of planning, it may not satisfy players who prefer more hands-on tactical decision-making. Additionally, the pacing of battles and missions can become repetitive over time, particularly during longer play sessions. Visually, the game reflects its origins, with sprite-based characters and relatively simple environments. While it lacks the detail and refinement of more modern titles, it compensates with expressive character designs and a strong sense of style. The soundtrack and voice acting further enhance the experience, helping to bring the characters and story to life. Gig, in particular, stands out due to his constant presence and distinctive personality, adding a layer of engagement that persists throughout the game. The overall pacing of the experience is uneven. The story becomes more engaging as it progresses, but the early sections can feel slow, and the structure of missions does not vary significantly. This can make parts of the game feel repetitive, especially for players who are more interested in narrative than in strategic experimentation. However, those who commit to exploring multiple routes will find a richer experience that reveals the game’s full scope. Ultimately, Soul Nomad & the World Eaters is defined by its willingness to take risks. It combines a distinctive combat system with a narrative that explores themes of power, morality, and consequence in a way that feels more daring than many of its peers. Not all of its ideas are fully refined, and its age shows in several areas, but its ambition and individuality make it stand out. In the end, it is a game that rewards players who are willing to engage with its quirks and embrace its unconventional approach. It may not offer the smoothest or most accessible experience, but it delivers a memorable journey shaped by choice and character, leaving a lasting impression despite its imperfections. Rating: 8/10
Qué nostálgiame de este juego de jugarlo en la PlayStation dos a Nintendo Switch y ahora por fin no tengo para PC. Ahora solamente falta conseguir que me lo ponga en español. Lo amo 10 de 10
Fun gameplay, interesting story, and great dialogue between the characters. I had the game for my PS2 back in the day and its still just as fun now as it was back then.

Game doesn't start, because of a bug 4 years old. Problem is known by the dev, but no patch. Terrible.
