OOOO I'M GIGGIN'!! I'M GIGGIN' IT!!!
A gem from the era of good story and mechanics not just graphics.
Soul Nomad had a great concept in putting Ogre Battle combat into a grid format for the first time. Unfortunately, the game is really dated at this point in most aspects. The dialogue and story in particular are atrocious, at least during the first play through. There is a lot of unnecessary clicking, for example needing to randomly generate squad layouts until you find the one that you want. There's an interesting set of unit variety, but the game actively punishes attempting to use more than one squad, so it gets a little boring. It mostly just makes me eager to play Unicorn Overlord or Symphony of War again, but if you really like this style of game and are okay with Disgaea type story and repetitiveness, then go for it.
Honestly, even if they didn't add anything more to the game it still is as good as ever to be replayed.
Great game with a very unique playstyle for it's time. It's squad combat with regular story and RNG dungeons, like Disgaea. Soul Nomad walked so Unicorn Overlord could fly. Unfortunately, this is a direct port with zero QOL features. Another incredibly lazy effort from NIS, as their Makai Kingdom and ZHP ports are absolutely terrible as well. I would recommend trying if you like these kind of games, but only on deep sale.
A worthy contribution to Nippon Ichi Software's legacy. In my opinion, it is not inferior to Disgaea. Good worldbuilding and atmosphere, an interesting story, unique game mechanics and cute girls. As a ported PS2 title, it does show its age. It can be clunky, inconsiderate, and has a bit of a learning curve. But coming out the other side, my biggest disappointment is that there isn't more postgame content. I would love to see a modern sequel or spiritual successor.
