So let me start by saying I have nothing but huge respect for Sonny, both old and this 2017 version. There is just something about Sonny that hits me big, and I think it is truly one of the most unique stories I've ever seen. And I did complete this title before coming here. The battle music is insanely iconic, and I still to this day wonder just what soul was sold to make it. The artstyle of both old and new is incredible, though they are very different. And thats where I will start my small rant: I preferred the old. The new art is incredible. Honestly? If it meant getting to see more of this story, I would love to read a comic book with this artstyle. I don't mind that at all. The reason the old art worked so well for Sonny 2 though was that it felt more Gritty. It had a Raw feeling that made cutscenes a bit humerous in their dark setting. I liked it better when the pngs moved. I understand it was limiting the way the old one played, but part of the fun to me was seeing how the sprite was animated for each unique skill, and I loved seeing the changes with all the new armora and weapons. But getting off the cosmetic side of things, how is the game? Its fine. It's 5 dollars fine. I would have hated playing this on my phone and having ads between every fight, but thats thankfully not what I did. Is is better? No. It is unfair. The legend mode, which is the playthrough where you dont use training, requires you to have the right toolkit for the foes ahead. It allows you to respec as much as you want, but you always need a handful of skills to function, just in different flavors. I was originally excited by the new subclasses, but after fooling around with my options, I determined it just wasnt as strong as the basic tree. And not for a lack of some serious testing, it just never felt good. Not to mention needing that handful of skills to function, there was no space for fun. When I mentioned unfair, there is legitamately 2 hours of content levels in this game that are completely based on luck, and most missions are based on whether the ai on your team actually do the right skill when you need it. It doesn't feel fun or fair. It felt time wasting. Then there's the companions. I found that Veradux was really useless towards the third level on, and that made me sad. He's our boy from the og games. And yet it felt like he wasn't strong enough to be a part of the team. So finally, lets finish with the story. I mentioned before preferring the gritty style of the old games, and enjoying the humor in it, but I wont lie and say this new story was bad. It wasn't. But it also didn't feel unique like the old games. It was unique because it was Sonny, but it wasn't the same. Louis wasn't blind. The mysterious tape wasn't mysterious for long. And most of all, to me, the story didn't satisfy the questions we once clung to. Even finishing the game, we never got the answer of who was Sonny before, and why did it matter? So I am putting that I don't recommend this game because you can really watch a playthrough and get the point. But if you really want to give it a shot, it's alright. I saw it go on sale for 75 cents, and I think that is much more worth it. I missed Sonny, man. It deserves to live. I think it could have been better then this game, or they could have taken the next step and made it a comicbook fully. But then again, we wouldn't get that banger soundtrack.
I mean, I really liked this game on mobile when it first came out, I was addicted. However I was also a teenager with dumb brain; the combat is highly repetitive with tanky enemies (but you yourself are also a HP sponge) so combat goes on for a really long time, often repeating the same 3 moves for boss fights for up to 10 minutes while you chip them away and they do the same to you. On top of that, whoever made this I refuse to believe is the same guy who made Sonny 1 and 2, because there is little to no thought put into balancing; world 4 alone has one enemy who has 2 moves that when combined make the game nearly unplayable, as they can reduce your focus gain (the bar for gaining a turn) by 80%, and then without cooldown they can hit you with a move that removes 20 focus from you; if you aren't fast enough they can literally just spam you with focus loss, and you'll die by 8-10 consecutive attacks from the same enemy as you yourself didn't get to do a single action. You can fight 3 of this enemy at the same time. Also, this game came out in 2017 and yet for whatever reason there is no audio settings on the main menu and there is like a 1/4 chance when you change screens you'll face a black screen soft-lock and just have to close and restart the game. Everything about this PC port is bad, and the game itself feels like the dev only played it once with a very specific play style, ignoring the other 5 classes.
It's a decent remake, with the same turn-based combat as the previous titles; it offers new ways to upgrade your character with different zombie strain mutations (fire, lightning, ice, nature, etc.) and also different ways to upgrade your skills with temporary random buffs. The art style's very sleek and comic-book inspired, and the soundtrack's fitting. It's nice seeing some of the characters from previous titles reimagined (like Louis, Veradux, Baron Brixius, Doctor Herregods, Doctor Klima, etc.). Also, the story has a beginning and an end, so it's a bit more satisfying than the previous 2 games in this regard. But in many ways, Sonny feels like a downgrade, as the gear is no longer displayed on your characters, there are fewer animations, and your party feels very static. The cutscenes are also not animated, and they feel more like comic-book strips. Also, the voice acting is minimal, which is a shame, as there isn't that much dialogue/text in the game, and making it fully voice-acted would've been a step up. Overall, it's a mixed bag, and I feel Sonny Legacy Collection's still better, but for this price and given that it'll take you around 10 hours to beat it, this new Sonny offers a good value for the money, and it's a pretty entertaining game.
The good: The new character portraits are nice, and the attempt at adding more of a story around the occurrences from the legacy sonny is nice. There are a lot more zones now and there's a dedicated party menu for managing the characters in your party. The bad: The UI is awful, it feels like a mobile app and most of the critical stats are hidden behind multiple buttons presses. This is the major thing that turns me off continuing to play this game. In addition. the abilities lack the variety and combinations that the old sonny used to have. Battles are prolonged and more about sustain now, with multiple waves of enemies per fight.
I prefer to rate games on their merit as standalone titles. But in this case, I can't help but compare this as a horribly tedious sequel. Mutations are cool, and make up for the otherwise un-interesting and lack-luster fight mechanics present here vs the originals. A shame they only work in 1/10 attempts. That said, the biggest gripe I have with this one is how much feels out of my control, and/or a stat check. What else... 1. No teammate stances 2. Your teammates are WAY less predictable (and that's before you even consider the lack of stances) 3.. Enemies are consistently faster than you, especially problematic later if you were playing a challenge run like me (which would be possible if enemy behaviour, teammate and crit chances were predictable - you basically have to roll a 20 on luck on those Red Pillar fights - have fun mass restarting until the enemy decides you can take your first turn. Physical only, no respec, legend is very near impossible) 4. The inability to re-roll evolutions (or stack them I guess?) 5. You can't change your mind once you open the evolution menu 6. Half of the evolutions are ♥♥♥♥ 7. Weapons with good perks invalidated by their level (stats) Why is the artwork for Sonny's sub-classes not used anywhere beyond the screen where you choose the tree? It's used in the promotional material, but not the actual game. David Orr did nice work on the soundtrack, which to me is the only component of this game that holds up to the originals. Despite that, it's worth the price, just not something I'd recommend if you've played the originals
Somehow not as fun as the old flash version.
i finished this game for my respect to sonny series this game is awfully bad version of old frenchieses
Massive disappointment. This game actually pisses me off. Everything from the UI, the camera, horrid mechanics. Like I wanted to like this game. Tried to be fair. I was a big fan of the developer. The original Sonny's and Sinjids were amazing games especially for their times. The dev literally pioneered a little niche in gaming so its a real wonder how this game wound up being this bad. All I can think of is that he took the money from those games and became an alcoholic and or drug abuser ran out of money and wanted to push out another game asap to fuel his addictions. I got this game for 74 cents and I'm still upset about it. It's buggy and afaik no one is going to fix it either. So really don't bother. Not recommended. Never bothered to give a scathing review like this but I haven't found a game that was this big of a letdown either. The originals are available. If you want to play Sonny get those.
I cannot and will not recommend this game. It looks fun until you get to the Baron stage, then the difficulty ramp up makes it next to impossible. Want to edit your save file to give yourself a shot of actually playing through the game? Forget it. The devs make you jump through hoops to even have a crack at editing the save files. I find that sickening since the game isn't even that large or special. It's just needlessly difficult and leaves no room to play like you might like. Negative review, never changing it. Essentially, this is what they did: ✅ Created an enticing reboot of Sonny from 10+ years ago. ✅ The game has an actual ending compared to its flash counterparts. ✅ Made combat sequences last longer than they probably should. ✅ Made it egregiously harder while providing the illusion of getting stronger through training. ✅ Made the game just long enough to overshoot the 2-hour refund period. ✅ Frustrates you by the time you reach the Baron. ✅ You log out and look for a way to edit the save file, only to find out you can't. ✅ Profit VIA false advertising and, essentially, stealing. ❌ Failed at making a decent game. ✅ Succeeded in ruining good faith in the game. Well done, Krin. Enjoy that blood money.
sudden black screen, please fix it.
