I feel comfortable rating this after only playing the Shadow part of it, I have a good amount of time in the original game so unless there's some game breaking bugs in this version I know what I'm expecting there. Sonic Generations is probably my second favourite 3D Sonic game, and I don't think it needed a remaster. I like the graphics and use of colour so much that it's my go to game to test a new monitor, and this still looks like Sonic Generations, albeit with higher scaling for all the graphics options if you want a 4k 120fps version of the game. I think they added a couple new features to the core game and I still recommend Sonic Generations, but if you already own the original or console version you're likely only buying it for the new content. Shadow Generations was kind of confusing to me conceptually at first, they did something similar in forces where they added a shadow dlc and it wasn't particularly interesting, so I didn't have high hopes for it, but it surprised me. You get a good amount of levels and boss fights, and an additional six hours for what's essentially an expansion pack included with another full game isn't a bad value. All the levels are well design and either meet or surpass the level design of the original game, you get some more historical Sonic levels (which don't ALL make sense for Shadow but they need an excuse to pull from more than like two games) On top of that you get a sonic frontiers style hub to run around in. I got the deluxe version so it came with the movie dlc and, that stage was surprisingly good. I think hearing keanu reeves going HUP. HAH. HYAH. is pretty good and worth the price of admission. I think there's especially a lot here for you if you're into shadow lore, and want an excuse to revisit it all, and they just stack a whole bunch onto shadow as a character. I think there's actually some good moments and good performances, as well as a pretty good ending. it's like Sega has writers now. Also the animation is really good and has a ton of work put into it, a lot of incidental stuff. The only thing I'd say is middling about the experience is shadow's moveset has too much on it, when most sonic characters are extremely simple single button gimmicks shadow has homing attacks, hold attacks, dashes, time stop, chaos spears, a glide, and several different forms for traversal. You can get used to it but it definitely took a lot longer to feel "good" than a sonic game normally would. I think that fits Shadow though, his stuff is always a bit overly complicated. The music is good, I don't think there were any stand outs for me in the same way the original Generations had (speed highway's remix is frankly incredible, as is stardust speedway) but they're good songs, and you get the originals if you prefer them. Also the map theme being an orchestral rendition of All Hail Shadow is very funny. This isn't a game related thing but I just want to point it out: Sega delisted the original version of the game to release this one, they also did this with origins, and most of their dreamcast classics which are yet to have a collection. It's just a really terrible practice on a baseline, but sometimes it leaves you with inferior, expensive version of the old games, it also absolutely destroys the communities around the older versions, which are already rich with mods because the games had workshop support. There was already a mod that put Amy into sonic the hedgehog and it's infinitely better than their half assed version of Amy they went with in the rerelease. Generations also had a ton of mods that now have to be ported to a, largely unnecessary rerelease of the same game that already looked fantastic. Anyways rant over, if you don't own generations this is probably worth it for full price, if you already played generations and you're just buying it for the shadow thing I'd say wait for a sale.
One of my favs right here, wish there was an option for the original story though...
I have been a fan of the Sonic franchise for a while, and sadly the only there games I've played are the 4 classic ones on my Nintendo DS, but playing Sonic X Shadow Generations felt like a breath of fresh air, while still holding onto that classic game feeling. Not only that, but it showed so much more about Sonic and Shadow, and one thing that I can say without a doubt that for me, this was in no way a waste of money. This is one game that I will continue to come back to play, even after finishing it time and time again. It also worked on my laptop when I feared it would not be able to run it TLDR: Worth the money, was able to run smoothly on the hardware, gave a new feeling while also giving a feeling of nostalgia, and keeps me wanting to come back and continue playing after finishing the entire game.
