This should be everyone's first Sonic game.
It is filled with so many important locations and set pieces from across the series, perfectly designed levels full of satisfying gameplay and replayability, a ton of unlockables through red rings and challenges for even more replayability, and a pretty good modding scene for more replayability on top of that! The story is also extremely out of the way, which is another factor making this good for newcomers. I highly recommend this game over all others to anyone wanting to get into Sonic.
Peak of the series along with Sonic Forces and Sonic Mania.
This is a celebration of the character’s history that brings together classic and modern styles into one of the strongest platforming experiences in the series. It combines fast-paced action, creative level design, and a mix of old and new gameplay ideas to create a game that feels both familiar and fresh. The biggest strength is how well it blends different eras. Classic-style stages focus on precise platforming and momentum-based movement, while modern stages emphasize speed, reactions, and larger set pieces. Both styles feel distinct but equally enjoyable, giving players a chance to experience different sides of the series without one overshadowing the other. The level design is the true highlight. Each stage is built around creativity, with multiple paths, hidden areas, and opportunities to improve your performance. Replaying levels to find collectibles, beat better times, or discover new routes gives the game excellent replay value. The remixed versions of iconic locations also make the experience feel like a celebration rather than a simple collection of old ideas. However, the game is not flawless. Some sections rely heavily on speed and can feel less precise, especially when mistakes happen because of unclear obstacles or camera angles. The story is simple and mostly serves as a reason to bring different versions of the character together, and some challenges can feel less polished than the main stages. Overall, this is one of the most successful modern entries in the series. It respects the past while still offering a polished and exciting experience of its own. With excellent level design, satisfying movement, and a strong sense of nostalgia, it remains a standout platformer for both longtime fans and newcomers.
A celebration of Sonic's past by reimaging a lot of levels and bosses featured in past games. These levels are genuinely very different in this game, with entirely new layouts and even the gameplay is completely different, featuring a more modern boost style and a classic 2D style, for every level including many that were never brought out in those styles before. This game is even very good with no previous Sonic experience, it was actually one of my first experiences with Sonic and it motivated me to check out more of the games. The gameplay and levels make it fun enough even if you don't recognize them. If you do know the previous Sonic games, it makes it even better to experience these familiar levels in entirely unfamiliar ways. A lot of characters are returning too, while they don't have much involvement in the story it's still nice to see them and interact with them. Overall, one of my favorite Sonic games.
It's a very good game but it's so unoptimized that it struggled to maintain 60fps on a 2060. If you want to play, get the game on PS3 or Xbox 360, don't waste your money on the trash X shadow version. It has worse cutcenes
