Sonic origins is pretty fun all things considered, i liek the museum section and i really like the added animations for the start and end of each game, i enjoyed it all alot especially for only £10. Most of my issues with this game come from me either sucking at sonic or just not liking parts of the original games, but of course theres a few things that everyone talks about- like the replaced songs in sonic 3 & knuckles, but i just modded it so it was all good. However i am not a fan of amy in this game, i think its a nice addition but i find her playstyle a little boring, she ends up just feeling like playing sonic with a little bit of hand holding- her playstyle doesnt really change the game- maybe if she hand a ground pound that launched her into the air or something id play her more, also because her sprite is based of her CD appearance she ends up looking out of place in any other game, especially sonic 3 & knuckles. The inclusion of the game gear games is cool but i dont think id ever play most of them, and in its place i would've prefered maybe knuckles chaotix or the genisis version of mean bean machine, because the game gear games just arent fun to play nor listen to, maybe except tripple trouble and a few others. Its a nice collection though- would I buy it at the full price? probably not. Is it still fun? yes i would say so, and i am happy with my purchase

Great remakes of the classic Sonic games. The music they've replaced in the last half of Sonic 3 is now terrible, but it's very easy to mod back in the real Sonic 3 music. It seems like the games are a bit more sensitive to crushing than the originals unfortunately, but that's rarely a problem (though you do now need to spin dash to get past the spikes right by the light switch in Carnival Night Zone). I do rather wish that they'd included Mega Drive versions of Sonic Spinball and Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine instead of just the 8-bit versions, but c'est la vie. The 8-bit Sonic games they do include (Game Gear versions only, Master System would've been nice as a choice) add value as well.

The definite way to play the classic sonic games (with a small caveat) I could waste your time and mine thoroughly reviewing each classic game entry and why you should play them but frankly that is not why you buy this game, all of these games can be found for free online easily. What sonic origins offers is a cohesive and updated experience to play all of said classic games, and in that department it succeeds. The anniversary modes offer proper widescreen support, not just stretch res or colored borders, and also makes a notable gameplay change by implementing coins that replace the lives system but also allow you to retry special stages, which as someone who is horrible at them I found to be a nice touch. The "classic" mode is still there for a purist experience, and the game also has newly added missions for all game entries for some extra content/replayability. The museum section is also a nice touch with loads of extra art, animations, music, and behind the scenes for all titles. Overall, purely looking at the game for what it is and what it offers, its a strong recommend, so whats up with the caveat? This game, with the dlc, is a disgusting 40 dollars, and like I already mentioned every single one of these games can be found online for completely free. And it has the gaul to offer a "plus" edition with all the dlc being literally the same exact price as buying it separately. For starters the dlc is flat out not worth 10 dollars, it offers 12 game gear titles that frankly no one will play outside of the maybe 2 notable entries (and they are still inferior compared to the genesis versions, which again, you can find online for free) I shouldn't have to say that proper 16:9 support and some filler content is not worth 30 dollars. So, should you still buy it? Well yes, I think for a sonic fan this is more than worth it, but that doesn't excuse the insane price, so my recommendation would be to simply wait for a sale. Thankfully, the sales happen often and are pretty generous, I picked the game up for under 10 dollars. Like I said I won't go into detail about the actual classic games, but just in case someone new is getting into sonic or needs a refresher, these are a blast, and have held up incredibly well after nearly 4 decades.

I honestly don't get the hate for this game. Its really fun and the best way to play these classic games.

Get the mod that puts the original soundtrack back into Sonic 3, and you're looking at the best modern way to revisit the original mainline Sonic games. The addition of beautifully animated cutscenes at the start and end of each game to bridge them together and recreate the original (limited) narrative is really cool. There's also some challenges you can do to unlock cool bonuses if you're into that kind of thing.
