Very good game (Sonic Origins should have been only one game not 2)

This is a fantastic collection of games! The first game is absolute MISERY to get through, with only Green Hill being the only enjoyable zone overall. But once you get to the debug mode and you get to the other games it gets a LOT more fun, especially CD and Knuckles. 100% worth picking up.

Best version of all this stuff. The game Gear catalogue could have used a little love. Great presentation, added characters, missions, museum, jukebox... lot's of cool little stuff. Definite must have for fans of classic Sonic.

Having played through these games SO many different ways, OG hardware, GC & PS2 Sonic Mega Collection, the PS3 Ultimate Genesis Collection, the OG games on Steam and now this? Origins is . . . Good, but it's got problems. I'll lead with the good: Sonic 1, 2 and CD are basically the best legit way to play them. Widescreen, smoother, special stages in 2 are fully 3D and buttery smooth and Sonic CDs run at a better framerate. There's only little nitpicks I can say are here. You can play through all the games as Sonic, Tails, Knuckles and Amy which is neat (and something that should have been in this from the start with no DLC). Sonic gets the drop dash for some reason in all games as well as the spin dash in Sonic 1 and in Sonic CD you get the option for the spin dash from Sonic 2 and on (it's better). Tails can of course fly, Knuckles glide and climb n' Amy gets her piko piko hammer. I think the mirror mode is a great way to play the games as it really messes with your head because as you've probably played these games a ton? Now you've gotta suss out going the other way which I thought would be easy but it's weird (in a good way). On to the issues: There are some mild bugs I ran into. Nothing super serious I guess as even the OG releases (and the collections by proxy) had some minor bugs. They say you can play the OG Genesis/MD versions but . . . You can't. It's the same games but cropped to 4:3 The game has this fancy 3D menu for some reason that is apparently a big enough deal that there was an expansion to add a bunch of interaction and characters to these menus. They're really nothing special other than amusing nods to the old games. But here's the issue, if you want to play this on lower end hardware? Like- really low end, but hardware that should be able to run these games? Yeah these menus are going to either crawl or be a wall you can't get past. On my old laptop with a intel HD 620, these menus are chuggin' but the games run perfectly fine. It's weird because SEGA knew about this kinda thing on PC and their original Genesis Collection? Had a 3D room that you used to access games but also had a 2D menu you could use to launch games. Sonic 3 & Knuckles, the elephant in the room. So they not only got rid of some of the music, some of the best music in the game arguably, the whole OST? Plays at a lower bitrate. IDK what is up with that. You can mod this, but that doesn't change that it's still an issue you'll have to fix on PC yourself. I had more bugs in this game than the others to boot. Minor bugs like Sonic rolling down hill, up a ramp and oops you just stop and roll back. I flew through a wall at one point that is supposed to be solid. Several times I had a shield, got another, I'd get hit and then I'd have . . .the other shield. Which I never saw before but saw it three times here. This is a case where the game is fine but if you want the best way to play it? Sonic 3 A.I.R. More customizable, better quality audio, tons of features, has tons of mods. Or play as vanilla as ya want (not the rabbit). The collection is neat, has tons of cartoons that you see before and after each game that link them all together, you can see a lot of concept art, box art, side art in the muesuem and even some Game Gear games! . . . Right the Game Gear games. Don't play the Game Gear games here, first of all the Master System versions of some of these games are much better with a bigger field of view, but also? The sound seems REALLY scratchy as the emulation doesn't seem to be great. Also fans have remastered some of these games so you can get widescreen, smoother framerate or there's even remakes with Sonic Chaos and such. Or find a way to play the original GG/MS games as again the emulation isn't great here. There's some challenges maps to play as well but I tried a few, didn't care for them and moved on. Over all the collection is good, worth getting if you want a simple, easy way to play it and it seems to have been mostly fixed from it's botched and rushed launch. But for Sonic 3? Yeah - if that's the one you want to play Sonic 3 A.I.R. it's not hard to find and not hard to get running, at all. There's even an installer on Linux on the Steam Deck's discover tab in desktop mode, you just need 1 file you can find online pretty easily to make it work.
