Learning curve too steep to understand the game within the 2 hour refund window. Quick battle takes all the strategy out of the game but is the best option for results regardless. Not sure what the playability factor is besides point and click.
*This is my number 2 "Hidden Gem" game of all time* This game is FANTASTIC once you "get it." I was frustrated at first by this game and it turns out I just sucked.. If you laughed at me for that, you probably played on easy mode (I can't even blame you) Also nobody is talking about the story in this game and its so strange to me. It's highly compelling and really takes off with the frog (Rana) prison-breakers! Overall I really love this game and I recommend it to those that love strategy. My one complaint is that they don't have a discounted "bundled package" to buy all of the DLC a little cheaper... but I'm still holding out hope they'll add it eventually

For scale, across Steam · Top Sellers · Brazil over the last 30 days: the 24 chart moves that followed a price cut of more than 20% went a median of 9 places towards #1, and the 2,404 moves with no price cut behind them went 2 away. One store, one chart, one country — it is the only place we have enough observations to say even that.
Prices outside the United States have been collected since 6 August 2026 and chart positions since 19 July 2026, so a cut older than that has no market to compare and a market that joined later has no history yet. Nothing here is converted between currencies.

Disclaimer: although I posting this review in 2026, I played and bounced off the game in 2024 around the time of the 1.0 release. I purchased Songs of Conquest based on reviews comparing it favorably to classic HOMM (1-3). First, I commend the developers on taking some risks, including risks to improve the tactical gameplay, such as elevation on the tactical combat maps. However, I abandoned the game after completing a few campaign missions for 2 reasons. First, the game comingles magic and troop roster, where ability to use certain magic requires essence generated by one's troop types. While no doubt some would argue this increases strategic depth, IMO it takes away from roleplaying the wielder (hero). Second, Songs of Conquest has a grounded aesthetic as compared to HOMM high fantasy. This translates in wielder portraits which I personally don't find pleasing to look at, which again detracts from roleplay. So while I acknowledge the game has merit, I can't recommend it every HOMM player.
It just feels more like work than fun. I don't have nostalgia goggles for HoMM3. In fact, I openly admit that I'm bad at both of these games. But even though Heroes 3 is 27 years old, I found it to be more approachable than this game. The campaign in SoC was very uninteresting, and missions often felt more like memorizing enemy behavior than actual, strategic maneuvering. It really feels like there is a 'right' way to play the campaign missions. And if you deviate from it, you just lose. It encourages hyper-conservative play and discourages wandering or getting into fights unless you can win effortlessly. Not very fun. The town management, I suppose, gives more flexibility than HoMM3. But that comes at the expense of more busy work as you have to click on each building separately to manage them. I much prefer the single town screen in Heroes 3. The magic system is obtuse, and I still don't feel like I understand how it's supposed to work. Which is a problem because of how insanely powerful some of the spells are. There are some QoL improvements that I love. The rally point building is great; a lot less time is spent escorting troops around. The built-in threat level estimation for enemy groups is nice but seems misleading. And the graphics are nice; I don't really mind the pixel art style even if it does make things less clear. I don't even mind the doom stack limits on units. But I'm just not digging it. There hasn't been anything to hook me in so far.
Tutorials do not teach. Scripting in introductory missions fail to specify what your objectives actually are OR give any hint at what outcomes will be from success. This is especially frustrating when success (which usually comes at the cost of your army strength) is immediately followed by a boss battle.
A must for those who is fun of HOMM 1-7 or Kings Bounty
