I wouldn't recommend buying this, even if it's for nostalgia purposes. The game is literally dead, whenever I attempt to play there's noone online on any servers - I'll join a game and play with bots for a while and occasionally 1 or 2 people may join but then leave after 10-15 minutes. There's no Oceanic community, that's for sure. The only community is a few Russians and Germans that sometimes populate their server, but other than that - it's essentially dead. There's also no effort to boost the player population, such as creating communities for specific regions, simple things such as in the Soldat 2 Discord you can create a rank specifically for their region so people can tag @Oceania or @Australia "let's populate a server" - there's none of that or anything close. I've played for 56 hours, and at least 40 of those hours are with bots it feels. Edit 1 year later: Forgot to mention, I pre ordered this game months before it's release, big Soldat 1 fan, played the launch night and even on launch night the game player base died within hours. :(
It's been so long since I played the first game, and I played that a lot. This game is in early access and obviously it shows, but I have to say that after only a short few hours with it it already feels pretty good even if not as I remember the first game. Network code could use some improvements, as well as general performance. The UI needs a whole lot of polish as well. But for as early as it is it is really neat. I was playing the native Linux build without any real issues other than what's mentioned above. Can see myself pouring a ton of hours into this as development progresses. Edit: Yep, I keep playing. It's great.
According to recent news, officially abandoned by the developer. It won't even see 1.0 version. Play first Soldat, it is better than S2 anyway.
I bought this game just for the support of developers, to be honest, but I do find this sequel full of potential. Too bad the player base is dead nowadays... I remember the good old 2006-2008, when servers were full of random people to play with 24/7 in the original Soldat. Too bad those days will never come back... or will they? (dramatic dun! dun! DUUUN!)
The developer abandoned this game, while still in early access, to make another game instead. Typical profiteering and why I've sworn off early access games.
2 years ago I would have recommended this game to anyone who was hesitant to buy it. Today, I sincerely advise against such a purchase. The game is clearly abandoned. It had great potential, which was unfortunately wasted by the developer's incompetent management. The lack of any plan for its development and decisive decisions to reach a wider audience has caused the resignation of many dedicated players and made it more dead than ever.
The dev has said he's not gonna finish it, so take it off early access and sale, or finish it and take it off early access.
like every game so far this dev released its abandoned, unpolished and unfinished.never buy a game this person offers for sale!
I played Soldat like almost 20 years ago, I didn’t even know that this game will shape my whole life and career. At the age 12, I started a community website and forum, hosted servers, developed scripts, designed maps, developed small tools and apps. So it basicly forced me to be a full-stack developer and a good manager over the years. Now I’m a CTO at company with 150 people, and I have 4 different start-ups. Now Soldat 2 is even better, it looks and feels awesome, it brings the game to whole new level. I wish I was 12 again. Totally recommended.
The game literally abandoned and confirmed by developers that it is abandoned.
