Yup, by now I am sure every fighting gamers had played the two famous games related to this one. Which are Capcom vs. SNK: Millennium Fight 2000 Pro (aka Part One) and also Capcom vs. SNK 2: Mark of the Millennium 2001 (aka Part Two). Especially ever since Capcom Fighting Collection 2 remastered (or should I say re-released?) those two magnificent games again for the young and old to enjoy. I am truly happy for this! Feels like experiencing the release of new games, similar just like meeting long lost besties all over again, after all these years!! But did you know this excellent franchise was started with a digital collectible card battle game instead of purely straight fighting? It all happened back in October 21st 1999. SNK vs. Capcom: Card Fighters Clash was quite a best-seller hit among Neo Geo Pocket owners, which including me. Tee-hee.^^ Long story short. Jumped to December 22nd of the same year, just several days right before Christmas; I got SNK vs. Capcom: The Match of the Millennium! Yes! This very retro-ish vintage and old but gold game! It was quite a huge thing back then, can you even imagine the hype when two greatest game companies clashes for the first time; with their own assorted trademarks of very best fighters?! It is a crossover fighting game, not a card battle anymore, at that time. Finally! Though I did loved both version, cards or even fight by rounds; still prefers the second one better! Then, SNK made two more of the card battle version. SVC: Card Fighters 2 Expand Edition in 2002, and the latest one was SVC: Card Fighters in 2006 for Nintendo DS. But, I still prefer the SNK vs Capcom: SVC Chaos. Which was released in 2003 for Playstation 2 and Xbox. You can buy SVC Chaos too right here on Steam! Well, hopefully by the time you read this review, it's still available. If it is no longer here, then I am so sorry, because I can never predict the future. It is impossible for me as a mere mortal. Well by that short history lesson, now you know that this game is actually the very first one in term of straight up fighting one-on-one. This game was, and still; my favorites after all these years. Not just by nostalgic values and good ol' days memories aspects, but perhaps because I'm also a chiptune enthusiast. Each and every fighters theme songs are played differently, according to who you are facing to fight and that's awesome enough for me. I'm teary remembering the days I played this, together with my buddies. Some are still around, while few are no longer in this world. While given the chance that we still live among the living, counting our days of borrowed time. Nobody and nothing lasts forever. But fighting gamers will always be around, continuing the legacy from each of our favorite fighting games. That no matter how many franchises or series out there, those games will always teach us to keep on struggling in reality, be at work or even study; with all of your efforts. And the most important things of all: Never Give Up! Many thanks for SNK and Code Mystics. We will always waiting for more signature games from you, as long as the time given for us to stick around. So keep 'em coming! Me and my fighting gamer buddies totally likey! b(^_^)d
Other great port from CodeMystics, Many of us didn't have a Neo Geo pocket to have fun with this game, as a portable game it did his job with many options for arcade singleplay. Unlock new characters to play is more easy than the original game and I really liked the roster in general BB hood from darkstalkers and Akari from the Last blade were big suprises. Don't be fooled by negative reviews, the "input lag" is intentional to make the difference between weak and strong attack after all it has only 2 action buttons. The plus from this version is the local multiplay and you can play "online" using remote play together from Steam to play with friends.
Even with fighting stick it's giving me a headache
Surprisingly works well on steam deck
Wow. This is a surprisingly impressive little game that, frankly, I'm shocked I haven't tried sooner. It's the complete opposite of SVC Chaos in all the right ways. It's got way more content, charm, a better roster (with stages that actually make sense), and it doesn't feel like total garbage to play which is always nice. It's pretty cool how much they've managed to jam-pack into this game considering the hardware it originally released on. Even the story is just a lot more straightforward than it's successor, with all the characters being a lot less flanderized than they were in SVC Chaos. As a whole, this really just feels like a much more earnest and faithful attempt at a Capcom/SNK representation than whatever the hell SVC Chaos was supposed to be. I'll go as far to say that this ranks second to CVS2 out of all the Capcom/SNK crossover games for me. I've only scratched the surface of what Match of the Millennium has had to offer so far, but for the price I'd say I'm having a pretty good time. Hell of an overlooked gem.
...how does this game from a handheld from 25 years ago slap so hard? I have tons of fond memories of this game from my childhood, mostly on emulators. Whenever I had to go somewhere and there was a big line or nothing to do, I'd jump to the phone and play this little gem, and it was good fun every time. But when I first heard of this game being ported to Steam, I was undeniably a little hesitant. Allow me to explain why. In SVC MoTM (let's call it that for now), you have two buttons, one for punches, one for kicks. Press it softly for a light attack, and press it firmly for a heavy attack. That's what the slight lag is for, by the way, it's the game understanding whether it was a soft press or a hard press. But why would you go through the work to port a game just to play it with two buttons? Do you want SNK Heroines? Because this is how you get SNK Heroines. xD Fortunately, you can easily circumvent that with the input settings on Steam Input, making this a 4 button player and playing it properly. One inconvenient thing also was the method of unlocking characters. In the original, every time you beat the game, you'd unlock certain blocks covering the secret character (9 for every one, to be exact). The amount of blocks vary among difficulty and every time you unlock a character, the easier settings would unlock less blocks. There's just one small problem with this. The original version would be randomized. So you could pretty much beat the game for no reward at all, imagine that. Fortunately, this port fixed that, now ensuring that every block you unlock for beating the game helps in unlocking a character, which is a MASSIVE time saver. Props to Code Mystics for that. Also present in this version that the original one lacks? (on emulation at least) An actual, honest to god, versus mode! Since it's a handheld game, you would have to link two of them together for multiplayer, which is fine, it's how the console is designed. But for them to work this out in this port is a much MUCH welcome addition. It's no online with rollback and lobbies (laughs at KOF XIII Global Match), but hey, it's something! :D And oh yeah, let's talk about the game itself, shall we? It's a decent roster, even though Akari in a crossover game will ALWAYS be strange to me, lol. You have Single mode, Tag mode, and 3 on 3. You even have 3 different grooves, predating CVS1 in that aspect. The gameplay is good fun, the combos are all there as you'd expect, which is downright amazing for a NeoGeo Pocket game, the only caveat they took was for the Raging Demon input, which yeah, fair enough. It's just two buttons, anyway. It's understandable. Also this has to be the ONLY game I know where you can combo from Ryu's overhead punch. That's crazy. xD You have an Entry mode which is just a little thing where you register some quotes and select the theme song for your character of choice and not much else. It's cute that it's here, even though there's not much use other than giving your main some funny quotes for a laugh. xD Last but not least, Olympic mode. Tons of challenges and minigames to earn points to unlock secret level 3 moves for everyone. These are fairly pricey, but some of them are worth it. Not all of them, though. Terry gets a super he should already have to begin with, and Iori and Orochi Iori get the same super, also Bison gets a measly projectile that just stuns on hit. It's not perfect, but not mandatory either. The minigames in question range from survival mode, a mode where you need one hit to win, but also to lose, time attack, Jubei slashing straw dolls, a dancing minigame with Felicia, a Ghosts and Goblins inspired minigame where you jump left to right collecting treasure while avoiding Red Arremer (getting some real SVC Chaos flashbacks here), and shooting Mars People a lot. These can be HARD, but with enough time, you'll get the hang of it. Rimururu and Karin are also there to guide the player, they can be pretty funny at times. xD This is ABSOLUTELY worth it, and it's cheap as hell on sales. I had zero expectations for this port, but they went above and beyond to improve the experience, adding some QOL changes like the local versus mode and speeding up the character unlocks. I heard you can play this online via Remote Play, but I never tried it myself. All in all, a very good addition to Steam. Thumbs up!
