About
Set in the densely cluttered streets of "Kowlong," filled with obscurity and chaos, this battle action-adventure game casts players as the "Hyoki," an entity devoid of memory and physical form. His only motive is to eradicate the monstrous beings known as "Slitterheads" crawling around the city, disguising themselves as humans.
Roaming the vibrant neon-lit cityscape, players must seek out allies among humans known as "Rarities," infiltrate and track dangerous organizations, and engage in battles harnessing the power of blood. As the suspenseful drama unfolds, delve into the mystery behind Hyoki's existence and the appearance of the Slitterheads.
The entity called "Hyoki" finds himself wandering amidst the chaos of Kowlong, plagued by the enigmatic monsters known as "Slitterheads" which mimic humans. Though bereft of all memories, he holds one resolute intention: to eradicate every last Slitterhead. Infiltrating the city, he sets out on a mission to hunt down the Slitterheads masquerading within human society.

Devoid of physical form, Hyoki's ability allows him to possess and control human bodies at will, turning the people wandering the city into his pawns. With this power he can slip through barriers, assume the identity of specific individuals, and infiltrate dangerous areas and organizations. By rapidly switching hosts, he can also traverse the city at high speed.

While human bodies are fragile, Hyoki can burn their life force, turning blood into weapons to confront the ferocious Slitterheads. Even when critically wounded, he can continue fighting by switching hosts efficiently. By possessing "Rarities", specific humans who share high sync with Hyoki, he is able to unleash even more powerful attacks and activate various abilities. The cooperative relationship with these "Rarities" holds the key to uncovering the deepening mysteries in the city of Kowlong.

Slitterhead is, without a doubt in my mind, the worst game I've ever played. It is a damn shame I went over the refund period before deciding that. The combat doesn't work and encounters are unbalanced. The writing is terrible and not even voice acted, aside from little grunts and gasps. For a game from such a well-renowned auteur who has put out some of the greatest games of all time, Slitterhead is a 3/10 effort.
it seemed like a cool concept but it just get boring real fast, I lasted less than an hour in the game. I like the traveling around but the story doesn't really feel like it's grabbing my attention. Plus all the character models and npcs feel clunky and hastily put together.
Slitterhead is probably my hardest game to recommend, but also my hardest game to not recommend. There are so many things to say, positive and negative. I genuinely loved the game, its overall presentation, all of its cutscenes, most of the combat, and all of its soundtrack. Slitterhead oozes charm if you let the vision of what it could have been envelop you. It is also painfully clear that this needed much more funding, so, so much more, to realise the clear vision this has. I played on the hardest difficulty (Nightmare) for my first playthrough. Not very wise, and I clearly do not recommend it for the faint of heart as it is absolutely brutal, probably among the most brutal game experiences I've ever had. At the same time, I loved this, every small triumph felt genuinely earned, and the game only gets harder. You make your choice, but you've been warned. The combat mostly flows well and is pretty stylish, especially if you embrace the body-swapping. I will say however that whenever you are fighting *several* enemies - hear more than three - which happens more and more frequently the further you are in the game, it kind of devolves into a bit of a chaotic mess you're trying to desperately fix. This might be influenced by playing in Nightmare difficulty, so take this with a grain of salt. The real bosses are mostly really good, especially in presentation, though some of them can get really messy because of the mentioned fighting-several-enemies-at-the-same-time thing. I prefer when bosses are alone as you can very easily fall in the over-tuned density category whenever you add medium spongy enemies around. Pro-tip: ALWAYS TRY TO KEEP TO THE MIDDLE OF THE ROOMS!!! (this may be inapplicable in certain areas but if you can, you should.) The designs of the enemies are pretty good, even if there are few of them (something like 4-5 different enemies, some being variants of one or another). I also love that they can change posture once in a while and have a totally different set of attacks and timings for deviations (parrying), this is good. Most of the attacks are very well telegraphed and mostly clear (even more if you end up refighting them) (except when some of the bosses go into flying posture and teleport around, that posture just plainly SUCKS) I really like most of the playable characters, most of them play a pretty crucial role in the plot (or their part of the plot), and while only 4-5 out of the 8 playable characters are fleshed out, they all do their jobs with different abilities and kits to take those missions on. Always take a supportive and an attack role character (the Blake + Julee combo rocks) The full voice acting of the cutscenes is mostly good and a really nice touch, however the sound bytes played whenever there is any dialogue outside of these can rapidly get jarring as these are whole English words, random affirmations instead of what is actually written, it can put off quite a bit at first. I would say that having another sound or even "mhhm"s would have been fine enough instead of this. It's tolerable though. As I have written previously, I've enjoyed the story quite a bit. To me, it is pretty good and has several layers of complexity, however, it also can feel really stretched to make the game use and reuse the same assets and the same streets to death, even if they are mostly used competently and "make sense". I would say the game is also very hand-holdy with its "puzzles" and "investigations", I would have preferred more explanation of the story through exploration (which is quite limited and gets more and more limited the further you are) instead of quite a bit of dialogue stopping you in your tracks and explaining and nudging the player and the camera in the right direction all the time, however this is also kind of subjective as I just prefer figuring most things out for myself, but if i managed to tolerate it, you probably can. I have some other nitpicks such as the keybinds being truly awful and while you can change some of them, you cannot bind abilities to most of the keyboard. (on an AZERTY keyboard at least, a huge part of the keyboard is both left out and unable to be mapped to, this was painful for ability-switching mid-fight as i *had* to be much less flexible in my movements when switching as some of the more practical keybinds aren't mappable.) I also have to point out that while I love the game and most of the things in it. It is very flawed and is NOT worth 50€. I picked this up a week ago when it was 20€ and I've had some very good and triumphant fun, but 50€ would be way too much for what it truly contains, around half of that or less should be good enough though. TL;DR. If you pick up this game, do so if it's around 25€ or lower, rebind what you can rebind in the controls, let the game take you on an adventure, don't expect too much, embrace its mechanics, don't play on the hardest difficulty except if you love pain and you'll hopefully see why I love this game despite its flaws. And if you do, I hope you'll enjoy it as much as I have.
Get it on sale if you are interested. This is a game that NEEDS a bigger budget sequel. The concept is great, but the delivery here is really kind've rough.
Quick Summary 7.5/10 One of the Most love/hate games I've ever played. Coming from the ex silent hill/siren director, this visionary strange action/adventure body horror game has some intriguing, but very flawed executions. It's worth a try if you got time and a discount, but be prepared for a-lot of "Huh" moments overall. Story: 7.5 You are a "spirit" that come to stop creatures known as "slitterheads" from taking human hosts and killing more humans. Certain humans, when possessed are called rarities and they can retain you're spirit and gain abilities. Julee is one of these people that bonds with the spirit given the name Night owl. From there, the game delves into time travel, questions on morality, and so much more. At times it's intriguing other times frustrating and more than not you'll be left questioning a-lot. You can see like so much of this game that the developers had a huge idea and couldn't quite execute it, even in the story department, but they definitely were hoping to make this game into a new series of some form. Gameplay: 7/10 Body swapping action. That's the best way to describe it. You are able to bounce between random NPC's and main chars/rarities with a action/guard system. Each MC/Rarity comes with skills/abilities to upgrade along with various costumes to unlock. The guard the system has you hitting block and pushing the stick in the direction of the attack to create a almost parry like system that let's you after so many freeze time to do multiple attacks. The gameplay loop (no pun intended) has you chose between missions and then run through the city, usually to a point for a fight only to chase said fight through the city then come to a point where the actual final fight of the stage is. It become repetitive pretty quickly, and you realize the only thing keeping you going is the odd storyline, and the crazy Slitterhead designs. Graphics: 7/10 This game's graphics are a mixed bag, like so much else. You have decent character models within the main cast and the slitter-heads, especially the unique ones are all amazingly grotesque and intriguing in design. Yet, short of the main boss ones, you'll run into the same copy paste enemies and see the same npc's running through the city over and over. The inter-mission dialogue is done in a visual novel way, with character's statically sitting at their location while a floating filter is put on them. There's not much movement to it. You get again that if given more time and a bigger budget they almost wanted to go for a true open world style city and game, being set in Kowloon the wall city. The city itself is great to look at, but the same re-cycled maps over and over again take away from something that could have been special. The CG cutscene that do appear through the game make a great stand out, especially a few that drip artistic flair. Sound/Music: 7.5/10 The OST very Asian inspired for the most part, dripping the sounds of Kowloon all around you. All the tracks are befitting of the scenes and make you get engrossed in something you should be scoffing at. The sound effects and noises about are all adequate for what they are. The biggest gripe, is the voice acting or lack of. The game ops for test in most places, with grunts and random sound clips signifying whose speaking than randomly in a CG cutscene or a random scene certain characters will speak in full English dub. It's vary jarring and throws you out of the game at times. Final Thoughts: I want to hate the poor execution. The odd choices for using grunts for voices, the repetitive gameplay and monsters, the same missions used over and over, even the last minute gameplay twist towards the end, is infuriating in a way (thankfully i must have did good, cause it let me skip the mechanic). Yet, the story, the idea, the design of slitterheads, you can see some love went into things, but didn't quite get there. For that, I kept playing just to see where it ended and I'm ok with it. Will I play it again? Probably not, do I hope for a sequel? yes, cause I'd love to see what they can do next with it. If you can get this one on a steep discount and have a few days to play. Check it out for yourself, just don't go into this with high hopes, more like curiously of what it is.
