Abathor is a fun indle title that brings you back to the golden days of simple games with good depth. Lets do a quick review. Graphics - Retro style, some will love it, some will hate it. I personally liked it Animations - Stiff, just like older games. This game is a love letter to old school side scrolling adventure games. Gameplay - Multiple characters to choose from, all with their distinct style. Enemies arent too tough till later levels, multiple playthroughs recommended. Hidden items through the level which is nice but overall its pretty simplistic in nature but difficult to master at the end. Boss battles too! Old school arcade save system in place. Music - fun music, but overall nothing too special. Value - for the price you will find a fun adventure here with more depth than you realize. If you are a fan of retro style games that are affordable fun and simple in nature, this one is for you. Thanks for reading!
Hm. I'm an old fart who spent majority of his allowance in arcades. I remember playing Rastan/GoldenAxe/DoubleDragon very well, so I have a very soft for these kinds of titles. With these pink eyeglasses, tho, something in Abathor is just lacking. I can't quite put my finger on it; graphics are excellent, collision detection Just Works (c), sound is good, music is nonintrusive, there's quite few enemy varieties and maps are interesting.... but, despite all that - I am just not enjoying roaming the map and killing enemies. While they're varied, they aren't exactly difficult to kill and they all have one solitary move they perform to attack. Very old school, which is fine, but you can dispatch them so quickly that they are barely a nuisance. The only real problem are flyers who sometimes just descend from the top of the screen and are outside of your swing collision - mainly existing to just drain your health or pop you off the platform. There's some upgrades but the values are so minimal that they're practically not worth the effort and risk collecting your currency. After 86 minutes, I honestly stopped playing simply because I got bored. That doesn't mean game deserves Thumbs Down, not at all! It just -probably- means that I changed and whatever worked back then, still works today because its FROM back then, but new titles? I don't know. Honestly if I'd be in arcade right now and had to choose what to spend my coins on - I'd find Rastan more engaging and probably go play that than Abathor. Which, now that I'm thinking - is exactly what I'm going to do.
The game starts out a fun tribute to old-school gaming, prominently as a tribute to a very specific arcade game. For the first few levels, I would certainly give a positive review, and if I had stopped playing it then, that's the sort of review I would have left However, a pattern starts emerging that made me stop and uninstall it. After a while, the level design stops being a tribute to its inspiration, but turns the experience into a very different game. The enemies and the level layout stop being designed to be challenging, and simply descend into pure annoyance. Enemies stop fighting you and instead just try to trap you, with the layouts intentionally designed to let them knock you off platforms. Progress turns into just standing and waiting for the moment to move.... over... and over... and over. It stops being an arcade game and becomes more like a puzzle game. For someone who enjoys a games like Super Meat Boy, and similar twitch-and-dodge games, this is fine, and what such players are probably used to. But I didn't buy the Barbarian-Game tribute for it to play like a bland and nuisance-infested metroidvania without at least the progress and exploration rewards that those sorts of games offer. If the reviews offered a Maybe for recommendation, I would have chosen that. A lot of people will enjoy this game, and I did at first. But speaking only for myself, I wish I had not wasted time playing what I thought was going to be one sort of game, but mutated, mid-way, into something more odious. This is a game that tried to improve upon Rastan, but injected into it the sorts of more modern gaming annoyances that turn off the very sort of audience that played Rastan in the arcades.
This game feels like a true homage to classic titles such as Super Castlevania IV in terms of gameplay. You can really tell the developers put a lot of love into it, they clearly have a strong appreciation for the 90s era of gaming. In terms of difficulty, the game offers Adventure, Heroic, and Epic modes. To unlock the true ending, you have to complete all three, finishing with Epic mode. I do wish Epic mode was available right after completing Adventure, instead of being forced through Heroic first, but in the end, it’s not a huge issue. Gameplay – 8/10 The gameplay is simple but effective. Each character has one basic attack along with unique abilities or traits. For example, the Barbarian has a heavy swing and becomes invulnerable during dodge rolls. There are also consumables you can use, similar to Super Castlevania IV, which adds a nice layer of strategy. Music – 10/10 The soundtrack is absolutely amazing, nothing more needs to be said. Story – 8/10 The story follows a familiar formula for this type of game, but it’s well written and engaging enough to keep you invested. The only thing I felt was missing is a ranged character, like an archer or caster. That said, I can understand why the developers might have left that out after playing, it’s easy to see how overpowered that could become. Overall – 8/10 A solid and enjoyable game, especially for fans of retro-inspired action platformers.
Abathor surprised me and delighted me at every turn. The settings are wonderfully varied, the esthetic is superlatively accomplished, and gameplay is both simple and well-tuned. It is also surprisingly lengthy, which makes doing a full run in one sitting overly trying for most. But for those of us who like a short burst here and there, it is exceptional. You'll likely enjoy this game more if you grew up playing arcade games and 3rd/4th gen console games, like I did. This is very much in imitation of those (consciously so), and it excels as such. Yes, its difficulty can occasionally be taxing, but with that comes the splendor of success. Woe unto those who desire reward for accomplishing nothing. Warriors, rejoice in Abathor!
Abathor is an excellent homage to classic arcade 2D action games with a lot of modern quality of life upgrades thrown in to really make it pop. There's a ton of content and stages to play through along with up to 4 players at once during multiplayer. Overall very underrated game, I feel it should be a lot more visible given how good it is and how much it improves on a classic formula!
Absoluto juegazo

4 jugadores, cuatro personajes bien diferenciados.

Beautiful game reminds me from old games
Fantastic Indie Title! This game has been so much fun to play. I enjoy it alone but it really shines with some friends or family in a couch coop environment. Great 2d Platformer with homages to Conan, Gauntlet and the like. It has some REALLY REALLY fun boss fights. The only thing I wish it had was a dedicated range character, perhaps a caster or archer. Besides that the game is an absolute joy and the pixel art and sound design really hit the spot.
