good game up to the point it gets extremely frustrating. There is a level called surgical strike in which the AI has overloaded boosters and their cannons fire non stop- by the time they get some more cannons built - your base becomes decimated . 3 cannons were shooting like machine guns. I think the ai gets boosted abilities. ie: there is a deflector ability when used it puts up a shield that lasts 2 seconds. when the ai uses this - the shield stays up significantly longer - i'd say double what player gets. IMO frustration kills a game and instantly gets a recommended no. I don't play games to get frustrated.
In Sky Cannoneer you make air battles. Place cannons on your territory to attack the enemy. But those cannons need to provided of energy. To do that, you must connect walls together around the cannons. Those walls are made by random "tetris" blocks you receive. But there is a limited time to place them. If you can not connect them on time, your cannons will not work the next round. This is a nice strategic game with many upgrades and a good variety of enemies. A multiplayer mode would be very cool. Bosses can take a few tries to win.
See the full review here: https://saveorquit.com/2020/02/21/review-sky-cannoneer/ Sky Cannoneer is effectively Rampart from the 90's reborn in 3d with an aesthetic that makes it clear the developer works on mobile games. Gameplay involves taking turns building a wall around your keep and placing cannons before blasting away at the enemy fortress, unless it is a dragon or somesuch. Depending upon game mode, whoever fails to keep their keep walled in by the end of the rebuilding phase either loses instantly or has a vulnerable generator to be destroyed, which also loses the game. With that said, I feel that some of the depth of the original Rampart is missing. The original Rampart made it so cannons could not fire until their previous shells landed - meaning cannons placed closer to the enemy fired more often, but required vulnerable positioning. In Sky Cannoneer, cannons have set cooldown times, so positioning only matters for how easily you can keep a wall built. Transports and the grunts they landed are also missing, which was a distraction from just blasting away at the opposing castle. You always have the exact same island, so there's much less variation between levels, and you eventually settle upon doing the exact same builds by raw rote memorization. Likewise, another new element to Sky Cannoneers not present in Rampart is the addition of resources to collect so that you can buy upgrades to your island. The arbitrary objectives and need to collect most of the resources feel like padding, and the upgrades really mess with the game balance. The third tier of the "tech tree", unlocked at level 9, effectively make the game vastly easier by making it significantly more easy to encircle the keep, which is the main lose condition. This is made worse when you're coming back to old levels, and you're now vastly more powerful than the level was designed for, and it wasn't very hard even before. Why would I complain about old levels being so easy they are boring busywork you ask? Well, because the game makes me come back to them to complete all the objectives - many of the stars you need to collect are based explicitly upon having an upgrade you cannot possibly have at the time you first come to a level, so you are explicitly required to come back after being vastly overleveled to get all the resources you need for even more powerups. Again, the resources and upgrades feel like being more about padding playtimes than being true challenges most of the time. The enemy also gets powers - and gets cheaty versions that are vastly better than yours - but the AI is too dumb to employ them effectively, and tends to constantly waste shots shooting invincible cannons, firing at your generator when it isn't vulnerable, shooting pieces of wall that aren't relevant to your actual defenses, and otherwise wasting its time. Because Sky Cannoneers also lacks the ability to permanently render terrain unusable like Rampart did, even the best powers tend to be little more than a nuissance that just slows your inevitable victory down a round or two. That said, the base game is a solid one, and it's still fun to play. I hope a multiplayer mode is released for it, since competitive blasting was the most enjoyable version of Rampart.
Disappointing variation of Rampart.
I loved the original rampart arcade classic, and have never been able to find a decent game to succeed it, until now. As a friend said "Its Ramparts in the sky". This game takes everything fun about the arcade classic Rampart and put it into a floating island theme and then added all kinds of extra perks/skill/powers to add depth to it. Very well done and enjoyable.
Very boring game. A few seconds of fighting a few seconds of building. And everything repeats itself.
Really enjoying this game. It's very clean and polished. Gameplay is straightforward but with the time limits on phases, it's tricky to get everything right! Definitely worth checking out. I received this as a gift, would be pleased with my purchase if I had paid for it.
Taking turns shooting each other - but your cannons only work if the barrier around them is closed. To do that, you must place Tetris blocks - strategically... Cool and original concept. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qUkwziHx-ac
I'm having a lot of fun with this game. There's more depth than I expected with the tech tree, upgrades, and super-powers. I'm a little over half-way through the campaign, but there's still quite a bit of replayability with achievements and 3-staring all of the levels. It's my go-to lunchtime game right now.
