About
SIRE follows the protagonist’s journey to visit their father’s funeral on the other side of the world. Players combine cards to explore a darkly comedic, surreal world of loss and learning, in a combination of classic point-n-click adventure and real video footage of my father's actual artwork.
When my father passed away 7 years ago, the idea for SIRE was born. The game comes from an effort to show others that they are not alone, and that the dark and often confusing emotions that come with losing someone close to you are all okay. We are all completely unique in how we experience loss, and also just the same as everyone else. Similarly, SIRE is both highly specific to my own experience, as well as totally relevant to all those who lose someone important.
To those who have lost: you are not alone. Spend time with friends and family. Look for distraction, but don't hide from your feelings. You will be fine, just not right now.
A story about overcoming personal loss and generational trauma, interwoven with my own exploration of losing my father. SIRE is both a tribute to an imperfect, forgotten artist and an ode to complex parental relationships.
An experimental yet highly playable art game that mixes a point 'n click adventure with a modern digital card game.
Combine cards to solve puzzles as the player travels to a distant land to visit their late father's funeral.
Includes video and audio recordings of my own experience with losing a loved one.
A playtime of around 1 to 2 hours.
Collect artwork for the Museum of Memories that showcases the surviving works of the artist Arthur van Laarhoven.
Music by the talented Serat, a multi-genre project of Vlas Presnetsov, who is also known for his ambient project Blear Moon.
SIRE is an art project partially funded by Stimuleringsfonds NL

This game reached into places I didn’t expect, and gently held up a mirror I hadn’t realized I needed. From the very beginning, I felt something familiar. Not because my story is the same, far from it, but because the emotions, the questions, the quiet realizations… they echoed something deep within me. It’s strange and beautiful to recognize yourself in someone else’s journey, even when the paths are different. I’m grateful. Truly. For the vulnerability poured into this creation. For the chance to get to know you through your story. And for the unexpected gift of getting to know myself a little better in the process. Thank you for letting me be part of this.
Not worth working on this for 8 years for my own mental health. But hey, it's pretty good in the end.
An intimate, artistic exploration of what narratives, games and relationships can be. You can tell that the game, and the experience, is crafted with a lot of passion. The simple but effective game mechanics support this by being intuitive, providing you with just enough agency to be engaging but at the same time also keep the focus on the intriguing story. I'm very intrigued in where the story will be going. Highly recommended if you're looking for an intimate, narrative experience crafted with care.
This game is a beautiful journey that is very well written. The steps you go through in this story to learn about the grief that will happen is done in an engaging and thoughtful way. The dissection of the perception of the world and how one experiences what they see feel and think is smartly connected through the mechanics of the game. It feels like you’re living a memory literally looking through someone else’s eyes. It’s also not only heavy and serious, there is lightheartedness and humor in the writing too. I can thoroughly recommend!
A story that can't be unseen, a game that can't be unplayed. Beware: it is more relatable than I could have believed. And somehow I got lost in its world but that's not necessarily a bad thing. A big praise to the author for sharing your experience with others, much needed in our current world 🙏
Strong visual style, telling a personal story about a man's broken relationship with his father. Very insightful deepdive into the male psyche, with almost haunting but simple visuals making it all the more memorable.
A deeply personal game about grieving, the relationship with a parent and what of our parents lives on in us. Beautiful and poetic it made me both laugh and cry. Also, it made me think about the relationship with my own parents, what's similar and what's different. So if you are searching for a reflective journey, this game is for you.
Even though our stories may be different, we will all experience the inevitable in some way and as I play this game, it reminded me that even simple sharings have a big impact on our relationships with our loved ones.
As much an artwork as it is a game about a reflective journey and grieve. A back-and-forth between the subcontious experience and the contious reaction to life. Recommended to play in one sitting.
Unlike any other game I've played, in a good way. It's a creative and refreshing way to tell a story about the loss of a loved one, and specifically someone you have complex relationship with. The first few minutes I had to get used to the gameplay, but as soon as the story started unfolding I was locked in and could not stop. Finished the game in 1 go, still thinking about it days later. That says enough, I think.
