First off, I wish to say I adored this game. I got the key through Keymailer for a stream, and was very excited as it was October, so it was perfect for the spooky season and cooler weather. And once I picked it up, I honestly couldn’t stop. While I have plenty of amazing commentary for the game, I do wish to start with my negatives, though they do not heavily weigh down my opinion on the game. 1. I do not support generative A.I. in any fashion, and while the backgrounds do lend to the mood of the game, I do know there are other ways of achieving said uncanniness. I will fully admit, I jumped into the game without doing research, so me not knowing this is more or less my fault. 2. There are a few punctuation and other grammatical errors. Most noticeable in the beginning and middle of the game. However, any reader can probably infer what the meaning of the setences were intended to be and contort their brains around it. Other than those negatives, I have nothing but positive to say about this game. Everything, from the music to the character to the writing feels crafted with adoration. The music itself is inherently eerie, but also not awful to listen to. The soundtrack strikes a balance of being pleasant to the ear. Every song enhanced the moments it backed. The songs gave me a nostalgic vibe and reminded of Lamento: Beyond the Void and other visuals from the 00s. The backgrounds do the same as well honestly. While I don’t support generative AI, the backgrounds being photos just match the uncanny vibes so well, this is furthered by the fact that multiple backgrounds genuinely move and stretch into creepy proportions. Not to mention I enjoy it when creators get experimental. While using real life photography is nothing new, it just befits the this visual novel. The backgrounds really add to everything. On top of the uncanny backgrounds, we have lovely character designs. Loraine feels exactly like what she is: a model from the mid 00s, and all the trauma that comes with that. But her outfit as well reminds me of Trish from DMC. Mary however, our other protagonist, wears a classic horror girl fit, and would not be out of place in a PS2 horror game. Now onto the writing, which is rather perfect except for the mistakes. There’s not a lot of subtlety about the plot, but I think that’s fine. There is so much going on that I think that subtlety is actually entirely unnecessary. What is going on with Loraine, how it relates to Mary, what is going on with the town, it is all wonderfully written. Multiple times during my stream I had to stop and gape in awe at the writing just because Mot is so talented, I am envious myself. I took photos of some of my favorite lines, and my chat, as I played, was enamored as well. Also Loraine ended up being painfully relatable. I honestly wished I wasn’t in such a place to where I could relate so much. But we dive deeper and deeper into her, and as a person who has been in similar situations, I feel Loraine. So much. And that just sells Mot’s writing here. That I wanted to take a break not because of the horror, but because of the pain. This visual novel was crafted with adoration. And I wish for everyone to play it.
Very enjoyable up til now, I can't wait to see how it plays out and how it ends. I really enjoy the game (:
Liked it! Has a captivating and well written story, plus a chilling mood. Somewhat short, but also very inexpensive; and somewhat predictable, yet enjoyable nonetheless.
reminds me a lot of old PS2 games and overall just feels really nostalgic! i loved it so much and wasn't expecting it to scare me as much as it did in some parts
A love letter to all those who struggle with coping with trauma, finding yourself in a world full of contradictions and paradoxes. As soon as I learned that “Signed Mary” got inspiration from Silent Hill 2 and Black Swan, two of my favorite pieces of media, I just had to grab it. Signed Mary tackles themes regarding the fear of change, the death of innocence ノ your inner child, and the desire for maturity and independence at the cost of the “you” you had to let go (the younger you, the you before the world tainted your view of life and your dreams). The soundtrack is oh—so melancholic and somber, and I was on edge the entire game. It has an extremely enjoyable story and gameplay. The characters and fashion styles are captivating, and I adore the Vivienne Westwood mention—she was my favorite fashion designer and the inspiration for my career choice, so it felt even more personal. Alas, I did not expect this game to hit me so hard — I've never cried so much and related this much to a game like this before. I yearn for more games from this developer, and my heart begs for it. Breathtaking experience. “Because you are strong, Mary. You're the strongest person I’ve ever known.”
It's alright, the start was strong, drew you in. Then it just felt dragged out, especially the ending. There were a few grammar mistakes too, I think in your desire to get this game out loads of simple mistakes were made. If some more time was taken it could've been really polished, the art is the strongest thing it has going for it. The AI for the backgrounds just seems lazy, could you really not use Photoshop or any program to edit your own photos? I finished this game a while ago but it really left no impression on me, which is why it took me so long to write a review. Separate yourself from the chokehold of ps2 aesthetic horror and focus on what actually made those stories engaging and your work will improve. The story honestly tried way too hard to be deep at the end, but it had its charm. I'll give it that. God, I just remembered those awful vomit sound effects, perhaps the worst thing in the game. Even if you end the dialogue where it happens the sound will play out for a whole 5 seconds. Just awful. Did no one play testing think maybe it's too much? It doesn't even make you feel uncomfortable or scared, it's annoying. For the price and acknowledging this is the creator's first work I still recommend trying out this game. For what it is, it's enjoyable to play once - maybe bother with the second ending after a year once you've forgotten what's happened.
silent hill vibes
silent hill if it served and slayed
good if you like this kinda thing +mastered the off-putting vibe, I was paranoid the whole time +/- lots of text, didn't find it too boring tho - loads of weird images/ concepts and vomiting sounds (just a warning..)
